2 Maccabees covers a lot of the same ground as 1 Maccabees, the revolt against Greek rule and the fight to keep the temple Jewish, but tells it with more drama, more miracles, and one of the most stomach-churning martyrdom stories in the whole collection. It’s also one of the clearest places in this material where you can watch ideas about resurrection and the afterlife start to take shape. We made it through all 15 chapters.
A quick note on what this book even is: 2 Maccabees isn’t part of the Hebrew Bible or most Protestant Old Testaments, but it is included in Catholic and Eastern Orthodox canons as part of the Apocrypha (also called the deuterocanonical books). We covered it the same way we covered everything else: chapter by chapter, unstudied, reacting as we went.
