Hosea Chapter 5: Bible Study by Atheists

Hosea Chapter 5: Bible Study by Atheists

Hosea Chapter 5: The Prostitution Problem Persists

Hey there, fellow skeptics and Bible enthusiasts! In this episode of Sacrilegious Discourse, Husband and Wife dive into Hosea Chapter 5. Buckle up for another wild ride of divine grievances and prophetic proclamations as we explore the ongoing saga of Israel's infidelity and God's wrath.

We kick things off with a quick recap of Hosea Chapter 4, where God expressed his displeasure with Israel's idolatry and the corrupt priests leading them astray. Spoiler alert: God's still not happy, and things are about to get even more intense.

In Chapter 5, God continues to lambast Israel for their sins, comparing them to prostitutes and accusing them of arrogance and idolatry. The divine punishments range from metaphorical moths and rot to outright destruction, as Ephraim and Judah face the consequences of turning to Assyria for help instead of Yahweh.

We also take a detour to discuss the historical and geographical context of the places mentioned, like Mizpah and Tabor, and how their hunting reputations tie into the biblical metaphors used. Plus, we can't help but draw some modern parallels and question the logic behind divine retribution.

As always, we bring our irreverent humor and critical eye to these ancient texts, questioning their legitimacy and purpose. Whether you're here for the theological critique or just some laughs, this episode has got you covered.

[00:00:00] Welcome to Sacrilegious Discourse.

[00:00:02] For this is what the Sovereign Lord says!

[00:00:04] Why do you need prophets to tell people who you are and what you want?

[00:00:07] If you can justify everything that the God of the Bible has done,

[00:00:11] then you can justify any of your behavior.

[00:00:14] A lot of this mentality is trickling into

[00:00:17] what is now mainstream right wing Christianity.

[00:00:21] I am capable of empathy greater than this God of the Bible.

[00:00:26] This is a Bible that they tell kids this is the good Lord,

[00:00:31] this is the good book.

[00:00:32] He is fantasizing about murder, mass murder.

[00:00:37] Head over to sacrilegiousdiscourse.com right now to find out how to leave us a review

[00:00:41] or support us on Patreon.

[00:00:48] Hey everyone, it's your favorite atheist duo.

[00:00:54] That's right! Join us Saturday, September the 7th.

[00:00:57] In Covington, Kentucky, just south of Cincinnati, Ohio.

[00:01:01] We'll be there with a lot of other atheists and secularly minded people.

[00:01:04] So make sure you're there too!

[00:01:06] Head over to our website sacrilegiousdiscourse.com

[00:01:08] and click on the link at the top of our site for more details.

[00:01:11] When you stop by our booth, make sure you mention you heard this.

[00:01:14] And we might have something special for you!

[00:01:30] With their powerful formula, they themselves eliminate the most hard-knocked spots

[00:01:34] for deep, pure washing.

[00:01:36] Just throw the disc into the trash and the rest, that's your washing machine.

[00:01:40] Because you always give your best.

[00:01:43] Try now the best discs from Pesier.

[00:01:46] Save the children's wealth.

[00:02:03] Yeah, and in that chapter, God was talking about how Hosea's wife sucked.

[00:02:10] But really he meant Israel, how they sucked because they were worshiping other gods and Ba'al.

[00:02:15] And who knows what else? They sucked, right?

[00:02:18] Yeah, he mostly talked about how much the people sucked.

[00:02:20] And the priests sucked more!

[00:02:23] Right, but he's still going to punish the people that were listening to the priest,

[00:02:25] even though they didn't know any better.

[00:02:27] But not as much as the priests.

[00:02:28] But still punish them.

[00:02:30] Yeah.

[00:02:30] You know, because you gotta punish people, right?

[00:02:33] I mean, it makes me feel like he's gonna kill them quick instead of slow.

[00:02:37] Um, maybe, maybe. I don't know.

[00:02:40] He likes to scatter people and he likes to starve people.

[00:02:43] He has a lot of punishments and none of them seem very quick usually.

[00:02:47] Every once in a while, he killed that guy that picked up sticks early on real quick.

[00:02:51] He killed their own sons really quick.

[00:02:53] He did, and remember, Hosea.

[00:02:55] Hosea, he melted the face off of them.

[00:02:57] He killed Hosea in a fucking instant.

[00:02:57] Yeah, he was like, fuck you.

[00:02:59] Touch my arc.

[00:03:00] Right? How dare you?

[00:03:01] Right.

[00:03:02] Uh-huh.

[00:03:03] Yeah, so I don't know what he's gonna do, but he didn't like what they were doing.

[00:03:06] He did not like it.

[00:03:08] And I know I was shocked.

[00:03:09] Weren't you?

[00:03:09] You were shocked, weren't you?

[00:03:11] Well, no, what...

[00:03:11] That God didn't like what the Israelites were doing?

[00:03:13] What shocked me was that he was like,

[00:03:15] you have a lack of belief.

[00:03:16] And I was like, that is shocking,

[00:03:18] because no, they have a belief in the other gods, not you.

[00:03:20] Yeah, yeah.

[00:03:21] And it's shocking that you're a god and you don't recognize that.

[00:03:25] Right, yeah.

[00:03:26] They just don't...

[00:03:27] They don't like you, man.

[00:03:29] They just don't like you.

[00:03:30] Yeah, yeah.

[00:03:31] They're just not that into you.

[00:03:32] It's not you, it's me, you know?

[00:03:34] I don't know.

[00:03:34] Yeah.

[00:03:35] But like that book, they're just not that into you.

[00:03:38] Right, right.

[00:03:40] So, yeah, that was Hosea chapter four.

[00:03:43] Sure as fuck was.

[00:03:44] And before we get into what we're doing today,

[00:03:46] I do have another Patreon shout-out.

[00:03:48] What?

[00:03:49] Yeah, so we have a new patron.

[00:03:51] They actually subscribed at the gold level.

[00:03:54] So thank you so much.

[00:03:55] Their name is Chip.

[00:03:56] Chip?

[00:03:56] Yeah.

[00:03:57] Thank you.

[00:03:58] And Chip is, well, we talked quite a bit on Discord.

[00:04:02] Oh my.

[00:04:03] And Chip was having some problems getting Discord linked up,

[00:04:06] so I was helping them, you know, get that all figured out and whatnot.

[00:04:08] Oh my god, well thank you for going into all the trouble, Chip.

[00:04:11] Yeah.

[00:04:11] Geez.

[00:04:12] And we had some pretty lively discussions about, you know,

[00:04:17] how they became an atheist and why they're an atheist

[00:04:20] and where they came from.

[00:04:22] And it was a great conversation.

[00:04:23] And that's to lead into this also, because as well as being a patron,

[00:04:27] Chip also joined us on Discord where if you join Patreon

[00:04:31] and you join and then join our Discord,

[00:04:34] you get a special Patreon thing that puts you on this little level

[00:04:37] that everybody can tell.

[00:04:38] Everybody can tell.

[00:04:39] Hey, like, Chip donated at this level on Patreon.

[00:04:42] That's so nice.

[00:04:44] And he gets a special little color on his name.

[00:04:45] So what you're saying is that Chip did it the right way.

[00:04:48] Chip did an awesome job.

[00:04:49] Chip did it the best way possible.

[00:04:51] So that's, you know, join us on Patreon, right?

[00:04:54] Help us out.

[00:04:55] But then join us on Discord also.

[00:04:57] Because Discord is where all the funds at.

[00:05:00] That's where we chat.

[00:05:01] That's where we chat.

[00:05:02] That's where we are.

[00:05:02] That's where we hang.

[00:05:03] Yeah.

[00:05:04] If we're anywhere and we're not everywhere.

[00:05:06] No.

[00:05:06] We're nowhere usually.

[00:05:07] But that's where we are when we are somewhere.

[00:05:09] Right.

[00:05:10] It's where we do our lives, which is what we're doing right now

[00:05:12] is we record this.

[00:05:13] That's right.

[00:05:13] Every Wednesday night at 10 p.m.,

[00:05:15] we have our live on Discord.

[00:05:18] And it's just a lot of fun.

[00:05:19] So you should join us for that.

[00:05:21] One last time, thank you Chip so much for donating.

[00:05:25] It is greatly, greatly, greatly appreciated.

[00:05:28] Seriously, thank you Chip.

[00:05:29] And it helps us out more than any of you will ever know.

[00:05:33] So thank you.

[00:05:34] And that being said, we just got done with Hosea Chapter 4.

[00:05:39] And today we're going to be reading.

[00:05:40] Who's head?

[00:05:41] Chapter 5.

[00:05:42] Let's do this.

[00:05:42] Okie dokie.

[00:05:49] Alright, so we are about to hop into Hosea Chapter 5.

[00:05:54] Or as I like to call him, Hosehead.

[00:05:57] You did.

[00:05:58] You took it away.

[00:05:59] We talked about this in the middle of the break.

[00:06:01] And because I mentioned it, you took away my correction of Hosehead.

[00:06:06] No, I had already thought of doing it.

[00:06:08] Because I don't like being corrected.

[00:06:10] I said, I want to call him Hosehead, god damn it.

[00:06:13] I don't need to be corrected.

[00:06:14] I know what the fuck it is.

[00:06:16] And anybody listening knows what the fuck it is because that's why they're listening.

[00:06:19] And it's also in the title and the description.

[00:06:21] Like I said, I only do the corrections for just correctness.

[00:06:26] To make sure.

[00:06:28] Having said that, there's a thing that I probably should have read before the last episode.

[00:06:36] Because it applies to last episode, this episode and the next couple episodes.

[00:06:41] And it is about Hosea kind of switching gears.

[00:06:47] So I'm just going to read this note.

[00:06:50] Hosea now turns in Chapter 4, so last episode.

[00:06:55] From his personal experiences to the conditions in Israel that they illustrated.

[00:07:00] There appears to be little chronological order or logical development in this section.

[00:07:06] It consists of collections of numerous short messages that Hosea apparently delivered on various occasions over a number of years.

[00:07:15] Oh, okay.

[00:07:16] Yeah. And I was like, oh, that tracks, that tracks.

[00:07:19] Because these are just like what?

[00:07:21] So he was just keeping a notebook like, oh, that was a good saying.

[00:07:24] I should write that down.

[00:07:25] Well, this is like a collection of all his speeches or whatever.

[00:07:29] Got it.

[00:07:29] You know, somebody who does a lot of speeches like at the end of their career, they might put out a book that has a collection of all his speeches.

[00:07:37] I can just imagine his speeches being like people are like walking out.

[00:07:41] Is he talking about his fucking wife again?

[00:07:45] Probably, probably.

[00:07:47] All right. And I have a few more notes that I will get into as we read this chapter.

[00:07:52] All right.

[00:07:53] So just hang with me here.

[00:07:54] It's not a long chapter though.

[00:07:56] I'm going to hang.

[00:07:56] Yeah.

[00:07:57] All right.

[00:07:57] So we're in chapter five.

[00:07:59] Yes, we are.

[00:07:59] Which continues into chapter six at the end.

[00:08:03] Oh.

[00:08:03] So I'll be recapping this, the end of this chapter in chapter six.

[00:08:09] Right.

[00:08:10] So apologies in advance.

[00:08:12] Right.

[00:08:12] Sorry.

[00:08:13] I didn't write this shit.

[00:08:14] I didn't get boring.

[00:08:15] I didn't cut it the way it's cut.

[00:08:17] Okay.

[00:08:18] I don't think anybody would accuse us of writing this.

[00:08:19] No, it's just I've caught on at this point and now I know to like that's really short there at the end and to look ahead and be like, oh,

[00:08:27] because it continues.

[00:08:28] Okay.

[00:08:29] Okay.

[00:08:29] I see you.

[00:08:30] I see what you did.

[00:08:31] Right.

[00:08:31] Okay.

[00:08:32] So chapter five, here we go.

[00:08:33] Yeah.

[00:08:34] Here you, you priests.

[00:08:36] Pay attention.

[00:08:37] Israelites.

[00:08:38] Listen, Royal House, this judgment is against you.

[00:08:42] You have been a snare at MISPA, a net spread out on Tabor.

[00:08:48] Okay.

[00:08:48] I have a, you know, that was just the first verse but I haven't out.

[00:08:51] Okay.

[00:08:51] What?

[00:08:52] Okay.

[00:08:53] So this chapter begins with threatening the Israelites for quote unquote and snaring the people to idolatry by their sacrifices and other rights on MISPA and Tabor.

[00:09:04] Right.

[00:09:05] So MISPA was situated beyond Jordan in the mountains of Gilead and Tabor was a beautiful mountain in the tribe of Zebulon.

[00:09:15] Okay.

[00:09:16] Both of these places are said to be eminent for hunting.

[00:09:20] So that's why they use the phrasing naturally of snare and net when they were referring to them because they were like appealing to the local vernacular and what was happening in that area.

[00:09:34] Sure.

[00:09:35] Yeah.

[00:09:35] Which I kind of thought like was an interesting note to point out.

[00:09:39] No, that's cool.

[00:09:40] Yeah.

[00:09:40] I like that.

[00:09:40] But you know, I'm so into like phraseology and wording.

[00:09:44] Yeah.

[00:09:44] So that's why.

[00:09:46] All right.

[00:09:46] So here we go.

[00:09:48] Verse two.

[00:09:51] The rebels are knee deep in their slaughter.

[00:09:53] I will discipline all of them.

[00:09:55] Every time I see the word rebel, I can't help but think of Star Wars.

[00:09:58] I was going to say that's exactly what popped in my head when you said rebel.

[00:10:00] Like that's the only place you can ever word use the word rebel from now on.

[00:10:04] Right.

[00:10:05] Yeah.

[00:10:05] Like pretty much it dominates that world of rebelness.

[00:10:10] Yeah.

[00:10:10] Yeah.

[00:10:11] Kind of like the way opposite, opposite, but kind of opposite the way that the right wing

[00:10:18] took over the American flag and patriotism.

[00:10:21] Like you hear those words or you see the thing and you're like, oh, right.

[00:10:24] National Christians got it.

[00:10:26] Yeah.

[00:10:27] And to clarify, I don't think it's the word rebels or rebel.

[00:10:31] It's the phrasing the rebels.

[00:10:33] Yeah.

[00:10:34] The rebels.

[00:10:35] The rebels.

[00:10:35] The rebel alliance.

[00:10:36] It's definitely Star Wars.

[00:10:37] Yeah.

[00:10:37] Totally Star Wars.

[00:10:38] I'm sorry, Bible.

[00:10:40] Yeah.

[00:10:40] Star Wars owns that one.

[00:10:41] Yeah.

[00:10:42] Yeah.

[00:10:42] Like you may have written it first, but they used it better.

[00:10:45] Right.

[00:10:46] I know all about Ephraim.

[00:10:49] Israel is not hidden from me.

[00:10:51] Ephraim, you son of a bitch.

[00:10:52] You have now turned to prostitution.

[00:10:55] Oh man.

[00:10:55] Israel, those sons of bitches.

[00:10:57] Wait, weren't we just talking about his wife the last time?

[00:10:59] Okay, listen.

[00:11:00] The whole thing was about his wife.

[00:11:01] Listen.

[00:11:01] That's why I read at the beginning.

[00:11:03] Yeah.

[00:11:03] We're talking about all kinds of shit.

[00:11:05] Switching it up.

[00:11:05] In all different order.

[00:11:07] Not chronologically.

[00:11:08] All right.

[00:11:08] Yeah.

[00:11:09] Anyway, Israel is fucking corrupt.

[00:11:11] Got it.

[00:11:13] Yeah.

[00:11:13] I added the fucking and the yes sons of bitches.

[00:11:17] No way.

[00:11:18] I'm just letting people know the way you let them know that it's not host head.

[00:11:22] Do you remember early on I used to call you out every time you said something

[00:11:25] not quite the way it was said in the Bible?

[00:11:27] Yeah.

[00:11:28] Like every time I was like, we need to read it like it says.

[00:11:31] I know.

[00:11:31] And then I gave up because you just don't.

[00:11:34] Because it's more fun to see Israel, the sons of bitches are corrupt.

[00:11:38] I agree with you.

[00:11:40] I agree with you.

[00:11:40] And I'm still reading all the words.

[00:11:42] I was just reminiscing about my attempt to reign you in.

[00:11:45] I know.

[00:11:45] It never works.

[00:11:46] I should have known that back then.

[00:11:47] Nobody puts baby in a corner.

[00:11:51] Anyway, their deeds do not permit them to return to their God.

[00:11:55] So they've been so bad.

[00:11:57] They don't even have the right to be like, JK, God, we still love you, Yahweh.

[00:12:01] You're the best.

[00:12:01] But he was just talking about prostitution before and they were fine.

[00:12:04] Was he?

[00:12:05] Because these are not chronological.

[00:12:08] Okay, but the same guy was talking about prostitution at a different time

[00:12:12] that maybe wasn't chronological.

[00:12:14] So maybe he didn't.

[00:12:15] And it was fine then.

[00:12:16] But maybe he didn't write it before this one.

[00:12:20] So what happened in the meantime?

[00:12:21] I don't know.

[00:12:22] I'm just that you keep saying he was just talking about blah, blah, blah.

[00:12:25] See, this is how I feel about this.

[00:12:26] I feel like this is he's talking about different sets of people, right?

[00:12:29] Yeah.

[00:12:29] So prostitution is fine if you're talking about your friends and your close relatives, right?

[00:12:33] Sure.

[00:12:33] But it's not fine if it's that tribe over there that are really awful.

[00:12:36] They're all doing prostitution.

[00:12:38] Because that's how they view them, right?

[00:12:39] Those are the others, the others.

[00:12:41] Sure.

[00:12:41] Right?

[00:12:42] This is some other tribe that he's talking about.

[00:12:43] He specifically said Ephraim and whatever.

[00:12:46] Yeah.

[00:12:46] So he's talking about the quote unquote others.

[00:12:50] And therefore it's easier to hate them.

[00:12:52] Yeah.

[00:12:53] You don't have to qualify well.

[00:12:54] They don't deserve to be hated.

[00:12:56] Right.

[00:12:57] You can just say you hate them.

[00:12:58] Yeah.

[00:12:58] So, and that's what that's, you know...

[00:13:01] That's what the Bible is about.

[00:13:02] Yeah.

[00:13:02] Hate everybody that's not you.

[00:13:04] Even hate yourself.

[00:13:05] But I mean, not as much.

[00:13:06] Right.

[00:13:07] Yeah.

[00:13:07] Sometimes more but not always.

[00:13:10] Yeah.

[00:13:10] Never not hate though.

[00:13:13] Right.

[00:13:14] Always hate.

[00:13:14] I mean, that's how we start out.

[00:13:15] According to the Bible, we start out in life.

[00:13:17] We should be hating ourselves right off the bat.

[00:13:19] Yeah.

[00:13:20] Fucking baby came out that pussy hole.

[00:13:22] Oh my God!

[00:13:24] You're disgusting, you gross baby.

[00:13:27] Gosh.

[00:13:28] I often wonder because, you know, they always talk about the innocence of a child, right?

[00:13:32] And how they should be spared from, you know, whatever.

[00:13:37] But where is that line drawn?

[00:13:40] When do you draw that line?

[00:13:41] Is it...

[00:13:42] Oh for a girl it's when she starts her period.

[00:13:44] Then she's a woman, she can bear babies and she's gross and disgusting.

[00:13:47] Okay.

[00:13:47] Before then, oh maybe if she starts growing little bitty titties.

[00:13:51] Maybe if she has little bitty titties before she starts her period, she's a woman

[00:13:55] and that's gross.

[00:13:56] We don't like women except to fuck them a lot.

[00:13:58] We do like to fuck them a lot but women are gross.

[00:14:00] I just wonder where they draw that line of innocence at.

[00:14:03] That's all.

[00:14:03] Pre-titty.

[00:14:04] Okay.

[00:14:05] And for boys, I don't even know.

[00:14:08] The second that they can start hauling stuff back.

[00:14:11] Like the second that they can actually be useful at work.

[00:14:13] Right.

[00:14:14] I think those definitions have changed over time though.

[00:14:17] Yeah.

[00:14:18] Oh definitely.

[00:14:19] Definitely.

[00:14:19] They used to be a lot younger that they considered them useful at work so.

[00:14:22] Yeah.

[00:14:23] Well it kind of reminds me again of the fact that a lot of the far, far, far, far, far right

[00:14:29] is trying to bring back those don't need your parents permission to marry laws so that they

[00:14:36] can marry like child brides.

[00:14:37] Right.

[00:14:38] Like.

[00:14:38] Well no some of those states still don't have laws to protect young people from that.

[00:14:43] Right but they're trying to, that is true and that is gross.

[00:14:45] Those states are gross and the people that fight those laws are gross.

[00:14:50] Or I should say the people that are fighting getting those laws off the books are gross.

[00:14:56] Fighting to, what am I trying to say?

[00:14:59] Yeah you're not saying this right.

[00:15:00] Okay I keep saying it backwards.

[00:15:02] People that think that child brides are good, they are gross.

[00:15:07] There we go.

[00:15:08] That's better.

[00:15:08] That's the bottom line.

[00:15:09] That worked.

[00:15:10] Sorry.

[00:15:11] But they're also trying to push for like a federal, like it's fine to marry children.

[00:15:18] Are they really?

[00:15:19] Yeah.

[00:15:20] The far, the far, far, far like the fringe.

[00:15:23] You're sure about this?

[00:15:25] Yes and they're also trying to make a lower the age that children can work in.

[00:15:31] Yeah it doesn't surprise us.

[00:15:32] The workers yeah because we like to abuse our children and we like to fuck them young.

[00:15:37] Okay.

[00:15:38] You know?

[00:15:38] Yeah.

[00:15:39] Gross.

[00:15:40] I guess.

[00:15:41] Especially if you're Christian it's the right way.

[00:15:43] Right.

[00:15:43] Yeah.

[00:15:44] Alright so the spirit of prostitution, speaking of gross things.

[00:15:49] I mean not that prostitution necessarily is gross just being forced to do that because

[00:15:54] you have no other way to support yourself.

[00:15:56] The society is what's gross and it's gross that you are forced into something that

[00:16:01] you may not want to do is what I'm trying to say.

[00:16:04] Right.

[00:16:04] Okay a spirit of prostitution is in their heart.

[00:16:07] They do not acknowledge the Lord.

[00:16:09] That's the real problem.

[00:16:11] Well yeah he doesn't like it when people don't worship him so yeah.

[00:16:15] It's funny because he's like you're saying my name when you fuck but I know what you

[00:16:20] mean and you're not saying it the right way when you go God, God, God.

[00:16:25] Like that's not worshiping me.

[00:16:27] No.

[00:16:28] You're doing it wrong.

[00:16:30] Okay so Israel's arrogance testifies against them.

[00:16:33] The Israelites even eat from stumble in their sin.

[00:16:37] Judah also stumbles with them.

[00:16:39] Everybody stumbles.

[00:16:40] Wife stumbles and breaks her leg.

[00:16:42] Yeah.

[00:16:42] Her arm.

[00:16:43] Yeah there's a whole story about that on Patreon.

[00:16:45] Yeah you should go listen.

[00:16:46] You don't have to be a member.

[00:16:47] For free, for free.

[00:16:48] Yeah you don't have to be a paying member.

[00:16:50] Right.

[00:16:50] You just can be a following member.

[00:16:53] Right.

[00:16:53] And you can listen to that episode where I tell you the whole fucking story.

[00:16:57] It's a doozy.

[00:16:58] It is a doozy.

[00:16:59] It's basically like a three week...

[00:17:01] Bad things happen to me within a three week period.

[00:17:04] Yeah.

[00:17:05] And yeah you should listen.

[00:17:06] Anyway when they go with their flocks and herds to seek the Lord they will not find him.

[00:17:11] He has withdrawn himself from them.

[00:17:13] Okay so I have some notes about that.

[00:17:16] Let me go back a ways though because I think I had some notes that I skipped over.

[00:17:21] He's coming people blah blah blah blah.

[00:17:24] Alright so in one of these verses we were talking about Gebeah and Rama and those were

[00:17:32] cities of Judah in the tribe of Benjamin.

[00:17:34] Okay.

[00:17:35] Okay.

[00:17:35] Yeah.

[00:17:36] And it says, wait did I read that yet?

[00:17:39] I don't know.

[00:17:39] No I haven't read that yet.

[00:17:40] I'm about to read that.

[00:17:41] Oh okay.

[00:17:42] Nothing.

[00:17:42] Don't listen to me.

[00:17:43] Okay anyway they are unfaithful to the Lord.

[00:17:46] They give birth to illegitimate children.

[00:17:48] You know from prostitution.

[00:17:50] Yeah.

[00:17:51] Yeah when they celebrate their new moon feast he will devour their fields.

[00:17:56] I have notes about that.

[00:17:57] Mmm.

[00:17:57] Yeah.

[00:17:58] Okay.

[00:17:58] So that's interesting.

[00:18:00] God's gonna devour their fields?

[00:18:01] Question.

[00:18:02] Hold that question.

[00:18:04] Okay.

[00:18:04] Yeah.

[00:18:05] Okay it depends on interpretation as to who's doing the devouring.

[00:18:08] Okay.

[00:18:09] Sound the trumpet and Gebeah and the horn and Rama.

[00:18:12] Raise the battle cry in Beth Avon.

[00:18:15] Lead on Benjamin.

[00:18:17] Ephraim will be laid waste on the day of reckoning among the tribes of Israel.

[00:18:21] I proclaim what is certain.

[00:18:23] Alright so let me go read back over all of these notes okay.

[00:18:27] Not necessarily in order but here we go.

[00:18:29] Sure.

[00:18:29] Okay.

[00:18:30] Gebeah and Rama were cities of Judah in the tribe of Benjamin.

[00:18:34] Okay.

[00:18:35] And it says after the old Benjamin which is an abrupt cry of warning because basically

[00:18:41] they're saying he's saying Benjamin fly for the life of your life the enemy is right

[00:18:46] behind you and it's supposed to have been a prediction of the invasion of the Assyrians

[00:18:50] and the captivity of the ten tribes.

[00:18:53] Ah okay.

[00:18:53] Okay.

[00:18:54] So then before that in verse seven when it says now a month or it says now will God will

[00:19:02] devour your fields or whatever.

[00:19:03] Yeah.

[00:19:04] Okay it depends on how it's interpreted some read it as a month will devour them or

[00:19:10] some also say locus will devour them.

[00:19:14] So according to second kings in a month's time the king of Assyria shall be upon

[00:19:20] them and oblige them to purchase their lives and liberties by a grievous tax of 50

[00:19:25] shekels per head.

[00:19:27] So again this is saying there they're the Assyrians are coming they're gonna fuck

[00:19:31] our shit up.

[00:19:32] And so instead of months some translate the original as locus such as that it would

[00:19:37] say the locus shall devour our fields.

[00:19:40] So there was like locus did ruin their fields and then the Assyrians came

[00:19:47] and like a bunch of shit happened.

[00:19:49] But also maybe you know like it could have been a way that they referred to the

[00:19:54] Assyrians as locus.

[00:19:56] Yeah.

[00:19:57] So maybe it was just a way that they talked about them back then that we don't

[00:20:01] understand today.

[00:20:02] And by saying that God did it it could have been them saying that God allowed

[00:20:07] these things to happen.

[00:20:09] So anyway like I said it depends on how you interpret it.

[00:20:12] Sure.

[00:20:13] Which I just thought again that was very interesting.

[00:20:15] Yeah.

[00:20:15] All right.

[00:20:16] We're at verse 10 now.

[00:20:19] Judas leaders are like those who move boundary stones.

[00:20:22] I will pour out my wrath on them like a flood of water.

[00:20:26] Ephraim is oppressed trampled in judgment intent on pursuing idols.

[00:20:31] I'm like a moth to Ephraim like rot to the people of Judah.

[00:20:36] Hmm.

[00:20:36] OK.

[00:20:37] OK.

[00:20:38] When Ephraim saw this saw his sickness and Judah his sores then Ephraim turned

[00:20:45] to Assyria and sent to that great king for help.

[00:20:48] OK.

[00:20:49] Ephraim was sick and Judah was sick with sores.

[00:20:53] So they're like he'll pay up and they turn to Assyria instead of Yahweh.

[00:20:56] They turn to their neighbors.

[00:20:58] Much like he bitched about them turning to Egypt and other people in the

[00:21:01] past or will not pass.

[00:21:03] I guess that would have in future because time frames are all fucked up

[00:21:06] here. But yeah.

[00:21:07] But yes you are correct.

[00:21:09] That's exactly right.

[00:21:10] Right.

[00:21:11] And so he's like I can't believe you turned to people you fuckers.

[00:21:13] Right.

[00:21:13] But he your neighbor Assyria that great king is not able to cure you.

[00:21:19] Not able to heal your sores for I will be like a lion to Ephraim like

[00:21:24] a great lion to Judah.

[00:21:26] I will tear them to pieces and go away.

[00:21:28] I will carry them off with no one to rescue them.

[00:21:31] Fuck. OK.

[00:21:33] Because they turned to somebody else for help other than him.

[00:21:36] Yeah. OK.

[00:21:37] So they can fuck right off.

[00:21:38] Again we were talking last episode about how shitty God is about

[00:21:41] you know killing people and here he goes killing more people.

[00:21:46] OK. Here's the thing like let's say that we have a kid right.

[00:21:51] And let's say that they get themselves into some trouble.

[00:21:54] Yeah. And let's say that they ask their friends and their cousins

[00:21:57] and a bunch of people for help before they come to us.

[00:22:00] And we wish that they would have just come straight to us for help.

[00:22:03] Right. Are we going to be like no because you are somebody else first.

[00:22:07] You should have come to me for help first.

[00:22:10] I mean that is a thing some people say sometimes like family will be

[00:22:13] like why didn't you ask me first.

[00:22:15] You know that people do get offended by that.

[00:22:17] I just don't. But what I'm saying is that that is shitty of you.

[00:22:21] And I agree. I agree.

[00:22:22] I don't think that we would do that. No. That's all I'm saying.

[00:22:25] Right. I don't I don't get families that are like that quite honestly.

[00:22:28] Yeah. OK. So there's one verse left

[00:22:31] but it's the verse that belongs to the next chapter.

[00:22:34] So I'm like do I read it. It's completely new topic too.

[00:22:38] Like I don't know. Do I read it because it's this chapter.

[00:22:41] Well yeah. Yeah. You do because it is after.

[00:22:44] Yeah. OK. So I'm going to read it now. OK. All right.

[00:22:48] So I started to say the end because that was the end of that section.

[00:22:52] I got you. OK. All right.

[00:22:54] Then I will return to my layer until they have borne their guilt

[00:22:57] and seek my face in their misery.

[00:22:59] They will earnestly seek me the end.

[00:23:01] So he's so he's going to kill them all.

[00:23:04] And then he's going to return to his lair.

[00:23:06] Yeah. Whatever that the fuck that is.

[00:23:09] His mind pallets sounds like he's a fucking dragon or something.

[00:23:11] Right. But OK.

[00:23:13] He's going to return to his lair until they seek him,

[00:23:15] which I'm assuming he's referring to the few that he didn't kill.

[00:23:18] Right. Right. Yeah.

[00:23:20] Which by few I mean a lot because he never kills hardly anybody.

[00:23:23] Right. That he says he's going to kill.

[00:23:25] You remember like how everybody when they took over Israel the first time.

[00:23:30] Right. Yeah. Exodus.

[00:23:31] Right. They came into into the Promised Land.

[00:23:33] Yeah. And they killed all the people.

[00:23:35] They killed all the king. 500 times over. Yeah.

[00:23:37] Right. But they kept being there.

[00:23:38] They kept being there. And then they're still fucking there.

[00:23:41] Yeah. You know, like they they killed all the giants,

[00:23:44] the Amalekites, except for some of the Amalekites.

[00:23:46] Right. Yeah.

[00:23:47] You know, are still around at the end of the Old Testament.

[00:23:50] Right. It's it's really dumb.

[00:23:53] But he's I don't know what to say anymore.

[00:23:56] But he's he doesn't he doesn't like his people.

[00:24:00] He doesn't like his people that used to be his people.

[00:24:02] He kills them all and they says you better fucking worship me

[00:24:05] or else I'm going to kill you some more.

[00:24:06] And he's that's pretty much the gist, right?

[00:24:09] Hyperbolic and the people are hyperbolic.

[00:24:11] And when they say all in every they don't really mean it

[00:24:14] and they needed a good counselor to teach them to use their

[00:24:17] eye words with feelings. Right.

[00:24:19] Feelings are facts.

[00:24:21] Tell me how you feel.

[00:24:23] Right. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:24:24] All right. So now I have some notes.

[00:24:25] OK. OK.

[00:24:27] So during the reigns of the Judean kings, Jotham and Ahaz.

[00:24:32] Remember the names, but not necessarily if they were good or bad or whatever.

[00:24:35] OK. Because remember the kings and chronicles we were there.

[00:24:39] And there's a lot of kings.

[00:24:40] Yeah, a lot.

[00:24:41] And I couldn't keep them apart, which was north and which was south.

[00:24:44] Right. Whatever.

[00:24:45] So OK, these were Judean kings, Jotham and Ahaz.

[00:24:49] OK. So during their reigns, Israel and Syria

[00:24:51] tried to persuade Judah to join them in an alliance

[00:24:55] aimed at resisting the spreading power of Assyria.

[00:24:58] OK. When Judah refused to cooperate,

[00:25:01] Israel and Syria attacked Jerusalem,

[00:25:05] where upon Ahaz, contrary to Isaiah's advice,

[00:25:10] asked Assyria for help.

[00:25:12] Assyria replied by conquering Syria and much of Israel.

[00:25:16] But Judah's independence also suffered because in asking

[00:25:21] Assyria for help, it placed itself under Assyria's power.

[00:25:25] And that was discussed in Second Kings, Chapter 16

[00:25:30] and Isaiah, chapters seven and eight.

[00:25:33] Got it. OK.

[00:25:34] So that was just a little bit of history to try to catch you up.

[00:25:37] Right. And that is pretty much the notes that I had.

[00:25:41] OK. Well, I mean, I don't feel like we really made any any headway here.

[00:25:47] No, we haven't moved forward.

[00:25:49] It's still God hating his people, killing them

[00:25:51] and then wanting them to beg for his forgiveness.

[00:25:53] And it's still dependent upon us having understood and retained

[00:25:58] previous history and geography, which I neither do.

[00:26:03] I don't think it's really, I mean, ultimately to understand what we're talking

[00:26:06] about and what is being talked about in the Bible.

[00:26:08] I don't think that a lot of that is very important, right?

[00:26:11] Right. It does make some things a little bit easier

[00:26:14] to understand with regard to how the stories go.

[00:26:16] Right. But the general messaging

[00:26:18] in the Bible is essentially what I said.

[00:26:21] God is like if you if you were worshiping other gods and not me,

[00:26:25] fuck you, go die.

[00:26:27] And if you then lived through that massacre that I did, apparently,

[00:26:32] come find me and beg for forgiveness and worship me so that you can then be

[00:26:36] you know, under me again, I guess, right?

[00:26:38] Until you're not and then I'll kill you again.

[00:26:40] And that's the spiritual, quote unquote part of it.

[00:26:44] The actual like what literally happened, though, is that a bunch of tribes

[00:26:50] tried to conquer each other and steal each other's land.

[00:26:53] And we're still suffering under that today because tribes are still doing that.

[00:26:59] Well, yeah, it was just in the name of God, but it's bigger and better toys now.

[00:27:03] Right. Yeah. And it's about resources.

[00:27:05] Yeah. It's not.

[00:27:06] It has nothing. Nothing has changed.

[00:27:08] It's always been about war and tribes, you know, countries,

[00:27:12] whatever you want to call them.

[00:27:13] Yeah. You know, the tribes just grew big enough to call countries and nations

[00:27:18] at the same size.

[00:27:19] They just have political structures now. That's all.

[00:27:22] Israel is Israel, right?

[00:27:24] Yeah. But I mean, like there's other countries involved now,

[00:27:28] like outside of the Middle East.

[00:27:31] There are bigger countries that do exist.

[00:27:33] That's what I'm saying.

[00:27:34] Like now the tribes have expanded and grown.

[00:27:38] So it is bigger tribes.

[00:27:40] Right. But you could argue that, you know, the Roman Empire, right?

[00:27:45] They they controlled a large swath of land that would have accounted for.

[00:27:48] It was a giant tribe.

[00:27:50] So that would have been a giant tribe back then.

[00:27:51] That's what I'm saying. Right.

[00:27:52] You're making my point for me.

[00:27:55] I'm sorry. So you agree with me?

[00:27:56] I thought you were talking in more of a modern sense

[00:27:58] as to that's what exists now versus that wasn't then.

[00:28:01] So no, it's still just a bunch of tribes, but they've just grown

[00:28:04] to the size of countries and nations. That's all.

[00:28:07] OK. But that's why that's where I was arguing.

[00:28:09] OK. Never mind.

[00:28:11] I don't know what I don't know what you're not following you.

[00:28:14] I'm sorry.

[00:28:15] So you're arguing that we've grown to a bunch of countries and nations.

[00:28:19] Yeah. From what?

[00:28:21] From what? Like, how have we grown?

[00:28:22] What do you mean by grown?

[00:28:23] Like, we're all joined together now, like in one giant world kind of thing.

[00:28:30] We're still not following what you're talking about.

[00:28:31] OK. Like the United States of America is like one giant country.

[00:28:35] Right. Yeah. It did not used to be.

[00:28:37] It has grown into one giant tribe.

[00:28:40] OK. All right.

[00:28:41] I guess grown is the wrong word.

[00:28:42] What I'm looking for is like progressed to where it stands today.

[00:28:48] A bunch of people that used to be just loose leaf

[00:28:51] floating in the wind joined together and are now.

[00:28:54] That's what I was getting at.

[00:28:55] That back then, the Roman Empire encompassed large swaths of land,

[00:28:58] much like the United States does now.

[00:29:00] Right. That it was it had grown to encompass a lot of people

[00:29:04] in a lot of lands. OK.

[00:29:05] I see what you're saying, but.

[00:29:07] And we certainly don't agree with the same things that like.

[00:29:10] Yes, I know.

[00:29:11] Jordy was like, Missourians agree with state is its own country.

[00:29:14] Right. Yes, I get that.

[00:29:16] I guess what I'm trying to say is like anywhere you live on the planet now

[00:29:20] belongs to a tribe, whereas that did not always used to be the case.

[00:29:24] Got it. So like anywhere you live in America,

[00:29:27] you belong to a fucking tribe, you know, your clan, your state,

[00:29:31] your your people.

[00:29:33] So there's more people now.

[00:29:34] Is that what you're getting at?

[00:29:35] There's more solidified groups.

[00:29:37] OK, OK. And they're bigger.

[00:29:39] I'm I'm really confused as to what you're getting at here.

[00:29:42] I know, I don't know how to convey it to you and my arm is broken.

[00:29:45] All right. All right.

[00:29:47] I think we're just going to like slide on out of here.

[00:29:48] I think this might be drugs setting in with wife, possibly,

[00:29:52] and and and pain or something.

[00:29:54] I'm not really sure what's happening.

[00:29:57] I'm definitely the the idiot here.

[00:29:59] No, I'm not trying to say that.

[00:30:01] I'm just I really don't know what you're talking about.

[00:30:03] No, it's OK.

[00:30:04] My arm hurts and I probably am actually not making sense.

[00:30:08] Got it. Go listen to the Patreon episode to figure out why I'm like,

[00:30:14] yeah, yeah, I'm falling out.

[00:30:17] OK, all right. Bye. Bye.
