Hosea Chapter 6: The Insincerity of Israel's Repentance
Hey there, fellow skeptics and Bible enthusiasts! In this episode of Sacrilegious Discourse, Husband and Wife are back to dive into Hosea Chapter 6, despite some personal setbacks. Wife's broken arm and upcoming surgery have slowed things down, but they're here to tackle the Bible with their signature irreverence and critical eye.
We kick off with a quick recap of Hosea Chapter 5, where God calls out Israel and Judah for their unfaithfulness. This time, God steps away from using Hosea's personal life as an allegory and directly condemns the leaders, priests, and people for their idol worship.
Highlights include:
1. The Insincerity of Repentance: Hosea Chapter 6 begins with a call to return to God, but it quickly becomes clear that Israel's repentance is half-hearted and insincere.
2. God's Frustration: God expresses frustration with Israel's fleeting love, comparing it to morning mist and early dew that quickly disappears.
3. Divine Judgment: Despite Israel's attempts to return, God's judgments are harsh and unforgiving, cutting them to pieces with his prophets' words.
4. The Historical Context: The chapter references the sins of Ephraim and the crimes of Samaria, highlighting the ongoing cycle of disobedience and punishment.
We also take a moment to welcome our newest patron, Bethany R., a daughter of a Baptist preacher. Thank you, Bethany, for your support and for joining our community!
As always, we question the legitimacy and purpose of these ancient texts, drawing modern parallels and challenging age-old beliefs. Whether you're here for the theological critique or just some laughs, this episode has something for everyone.

[00:00:00] Welcome to Sacrilegious Discourse. For this is what the sovereign Lord says, Why do you need prophets
[00:00:05] to tell people who you are and what you want? If you can justify everything that the God of the Bible
[00:00:11] has done, then you can justify any of your behavior. A lot of this mentality is trickling into
[00:00:17] what is now mainstream right wing Christianity. I am capable of empathy greater than this God of the Bible.
[00:00:26] This is a Bible that they tell kids, this is the good Lord, this is the good book,
[00:00:32] this is he is fantasizing about murder, mass murder.
[00:00:38] And over to sacrilegiousdiscourse.com right now I got how to leave a circuit or some Buddhist on patreon.
[00:00:49] Wife! Do you know what we're doing and where the hell we are? Well, we're
[00:00:54] after a dig back into things here because it's been a little bit since we've done anything
[00:00:58] and we do want to apologize for that. We've been doing a lot of well-precovering,
[00:01:04] I guess, would be the best word. My arm is broken. Yeah, yeah. So it's caused a little bit of a
[00:01:11] strain on our podcast in schedule because it's hard for Wife to research with one hand.
[00:01:17] And also I'm working a lot more so there's a couple things that are working against this right now
[00:01:22] and also Wife has surgery coming up soon. I do, by the time you're here, this Monday morning,
[00:01:32] I will be having surgery tomorrow which is Tuesday to get metal put in your hand.
[00:01:39] And they're putting a metal plate in my hand. Right, that's fine.
[00:01:43] On my way to becoming the bionic woman. Yeah, so as far as where we are in the Bible,
[00:01:50] we're still in Joseah. We are Jose. Yeah, and we just got done reading, well, not just but we
[00:01:56] read last Jose chapter five. And in that chapter Jose, well, God is using Jose to basically call
[00:02:07] everybody out of their unfaithful bullshit of worshipping idols, I guess. Yeah, like as I recall,
[00:02:14] chapter five or four and five, I think, like stepped away from his personal. Yeah, he wasn't
[00:02:22] even as wife anymore as the main culprit. Yeah, he was just calling out Israel and Judah and saying,
[00:02:32] you back as this, you back as that. Yeah, he was calling out the leaders, the priests, and the people,
[00:02:38] everybody. Like we've already been here so many times. Right, and God just hates it when people worship
[00:02:42] anybody, but him and he's like, but if you do worship me, then I'll love ya and you know,
[00:02:46] everything's cool, but don't worship other things because otherwise I'll kill ya. Yeah, and then
[00:02:52] that's the general shittingness of God, right? I mean, like all through the Old Testament. So
[00:02:59] speaking of non-shittingness, so jumping away from the shittingness of God, we have a new
[00:03:06] patron. What? Yeah, so we wanted to do a shout out for Bethany R. Bethany? Yeah, and Bethany is our
[00:03:15] newest patron and they let me know that they were a daughter of a Baptist preacher. Oh my goodness,
[00:03:24] Bethany. Yeah, my, my sincerest sadness is to you. Well, I hope that that works, you know,
[00:03:35] I don't know the whole story about it, but I know sometimes that causes strains on families. So
[00:03:41] that could be a little rough sometimes. Yeah. But I was listening things giving God a be hard.
[00:03:47] And also, I don't know if it's pasture or preacher, like I never know what to say for which
[00:03:51] denomination, I always screw that out because I'd never was part of it, so I don't understand
[00:03:56] what which is which. But I think that I know that we had a Baptist preacher, we are landlord,
[00:04:02] pasture, be our landlord, we have a pasture. Right, so maybe as pasture. Yeah, I think that a lot
[00:04:09] of the Christian denominations are pasture could be, could be. I don't know for sure. I imagine
[00:04:15] preacher is like somebody in the south. You know what I mean? I know that they're a distinguished
[00:04:23] machine. I don't know who knows. I'm speaking out of my askin. And then Padre or Father is
[00:04:31] Catholic. Yeah, I was going to say that that sounds more Catholic. Yeah. That's where we'll go with that.
[00:04:36] But anyway, Bethany, thank you so much. Oh yeah, thank you, Bethany. Or becoming a patron,
[00:04:42] you really help us out more than you'll ever know. We are so grateful, Bethany. Thank you. Yeah.
[00:04:48] Yeah. And that being said, we like I said, we're getting we just finished Jose chapter five. Yes,
[00:04:56] we did. Which means that today we're getting into Jose chapter six. All right, let's do this. Okay,
[00:05:02] okay.
[00:05:08] All right, we are jumping into Jose chapter six. Or is I like to call him? Who's head?
[00:05:16] And I don't know if you were called because it's been so long. But chapter six actually began
[00:05:23] at the end of the previous chapter. Right. And that small little section was just like one verse at
[00:05:30] the end of chapter five. Yeah. That starts this next bit that we're going to read, which is subtitled
[00:05:37] the insincereity of Israel's repentance. Okay. So I'm going to start with that verse at the end
[00:05:45] of chapter five. Yeah, all right. All right. Then I will return to my layer until they have
[00:05:52] born their guilt and seek my face in their memory. They will earnestly seek me. That's great.
[00:05:59] I was like when he says layer it sounds an awful lot like a dragon. I think I said that the last time
[00:06:05] like who refers to their place with a dwell as a layer. Be a wolf.
[00:06:15] Okay, okay. Okay. Let me it would be more fun. Maybe if everybody called their house like a
[00:06:19] layer instead of a house. Yeah, I would like to return to my layer. You said say that would you leave
[00:06:26] work and you see what your coworkers are right. Right. And like another time referred to it as your
[00:06:35] dungeon. Right. Yeah. Who believe it? Yeah. Just see if they like react to any of those.
[00:06:43] Right. All right. So now we're starting chapter six. Okay. Yeah. All right. Come, let us return to the Lord.
[00:06:49] He has torn us to pieces. Oh, that's how I would say what people tear me to pieces. Let's return
[00:06:56] to that. That sounds exciting. Yeah, but he will heal us. Oh, okay. He has injured us, but he will
[00:07:01] bind up our wounds after two days. He will revive us on the third day. He will restore us.
[00:07:09] We'll get sound like. Sounds like Jesus doesn't it? Little bit that we may live in his presence.
[00:07:15] Let us acknowledge the Lord. Let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises,
[00:07:21] he will appear. Is the sun rises, huh? Uh-huh. Okay. Yeah. He will come to us like the winter
[00:07:28] rains, like the spring rains that water the earth. What can I do with you, Ephraim? What can I do with
[00:07:37] you, Judah? Your love is like the morning mist, like the early dew that disappears.
[00:07:44] Ha. Ha. Ha. My due better disappear is a bad day when my due doesn't disappear.
[00:07:51] I'm not sure what you're getting at there exactly. I clogged the toilet once in my life.
[00:07:56] What? That went to the fence. That was not expecting I should do it doesn't disappear,
[00:08:02] then you're in trouble. Yeah. Yeah, I just I wasn't my mind wasn't there. So I mean,
[00:08:13] like I thought that happened to everybody at least once. Sure. All right. So anyway, do disappears.
[00:08:22] Okay. And that's a good thing. Yeah. Therefore, I cut you in pieces with my profits. I killed
[00:08:29] you with the words of my mouth. Then my judgments go forth like the sun for I desire mercy,
[00:08:37] not sacrifice and acknowledgement of God, rather than burn offerings. As at Adam, they have
[00:08:45] broken the covenant. They were unfaithful to me even there. Gilead is a city of evil doers,
[00:08:51] stained with the footprints of blood. As marauders lie in ambush for a victim,
[00:08:58] so do bands of priests. They murder on the road to Sheshirem carrying out their wicked schemes.
[00:09:06] I have seen a horrible thing in Israel. Their ephem is given to prostitution. Israel is the
[00:09:14] file, also for you, Judah, a harvest is appointed. Whenever I would restore the fortunes of my people,
[00:09:22] comma, and then we cut off meds and it's, wow. Yeah. Okay. I mean, to read the rest of the sentence.
[00:09:30] Yeah, I guess so because that's a weird way to cut off. So technically, we're going to go into
[00:09:34] seven a little bit, but we're going to cover it again. Probably when we get into the world.
[00:09:38] Yeah, we will. We will. Okay. Also for you, Judah, a harvest is appointed. Whenever I would restore
[00:09:44] the fortunes of my people and here we go into the next chapter. Whenever I would heal Israel,
[00:09:51] the sins of Ephraim are exposed and the crimes of Samaria revealed. Okay. And I won't go any further
[00:09:58] into this chapter. Okay. All right. So yeah, he's basically saying that they can love him,
[00:10:10] but they aren't and they're their loved disappears. And then he's like, and I'm going to
[00:10:15] fuck you up. Some more, some more. Like, you know, we are always, he got's always fucking them up.
[00:10:20] Yeah. That's the gist of this, right? I think it's kind of hard to read, but he was going back
[00:10:28] to fan even as far back as Adam. My people been fucking up. Right, which we come in all the time,
[00:10:34] because like you are not a very good God that can't get your people in line and more than that,
[00:10:39] like if you have this ability to see what's coming down the pipe, right? Why are you surprised?
[00:10:44] Right. Why are you surprised? It doesn't make any sense. Why are you mad? Why do you,
[00:10:48] why are you even give a fuck if it's all meant to be? If it's all predestined,
[00:10:53] it doesn't fucking matter. None of it matters unless you made it to where you predestined yourself
[00:10:59] to be pissy and kill people. Like that's weird, man. That is a weird way to handle your
[00:11:07] your creation. Yeah. It is. I don't care for it. Right. And, you know, I don't care.
[00:11:16] This is a group of people that are just like, they want their God to be the best God. And they
[00:11:21] see these other people that are not as perfect at worshiping their God as them. And they're like,
[00:11:25] dudes, you guys are going to get fucked up if you don't worship this God correctly. Yeah.
[00:11:30] That's all this is. Yeah. Sorry. I don't know where I'm going with this. There's just the same
[00:11:34] fucking thing every goddamn chapter. It really is. So I'm just tired of God being like,
[00:11:38] oh my people, right? Right. And then the people going, so the entire y'all weigh in my right?
[00:11:44] Yeah. It's very tiring. I'm like, just break up or get together. Whatever.
[00:11:50] Nobody cares about your team drama. Yeah. Yeah, definitely. So that was a pretty short chapter.
[00:11:57] It really was. But that was Joseia chapter six. It sure is buckwise. Which means that and we're
[00:12:03] going to definitely try to actually do this. We're going to be back tomorrow with.
[00:12:07] Who's head chapter seven. All right. We'll see you then. Bye.
