Daniel Chapter 5: The Writing on the Wall
In this episode of Sacrilegious Discourse, Husband and Wife delve into Daniel Chapter 5, a pivotal chapter in the Book of Daniel. They discuss the out-of-place nature of this chapter, as it should chronologically follow chapters 7 and 8.
The story revolves around King Belshazzar's extravagant feast, during which he uses sacred goblets from the Jerusalem temple, angering God. A mysterious hand appears, writing on the palace wall. The king's wise men fail to interpret the message, but Daniel successfully deciphers the writing, foretelling Belshazzar's downfall and the rise of the Medes and Persians.
Husband and Wife analyze the plausibility of the events, questioning the king's reaction to Daniel's prophecy and the accuracy of historical details. They explore the origin of the phrase "the writing is on the wall" and discuss the potential reasons behind the inability of the king's wise men to interpret the message.
Join Husband and Wife as they dissect this famous biblical tale, examining its historical context, symbolism, and theological implications.

[00:00:00] Welcome to Sacrilegious Discourse. For this is what the sovereign Lord says, Why do you need prophets to tell people who you are and what you want? If you can justify everything that the God of the Bible has done
[00:00:12] then you can justify any of your behavior. A lot of this mentality is trickling into what is now mainstream right wing Christianity. I am capable of empathy greater than this God of the Bible. This is a Bible that they tell kids. This is a Bible
[00:00:28] that they tell kids. This is the good Lord. This is the good book. This is he is fantasizing about murder, mass murder. And over to Sacrilegious Discourse.com right now I got how to read this review or some Buddhist on H.G.
[00:00:43] Wife, do you know where we are and how the hell we got here? Well yesterday we read a Daniel chapter 4 and in that chapter, Nebuchadnezzar was writing a letter. He was writing
[00:01:03] a letter. Yeah and it was about a dream and I would have assumed that it was about the last dream that we heard about but it didn't quite sound the same. So that made me
[00:01:12] question a lot of things about like what the fuck is happening, what's going on, what is this shit? It was. But ultimately he was going to be a tree in an eagle and he's going
[00:01:27] to get lost in the wilderness for seven years and there's like all kinds of stuff going on in the dream. I'm going to eat grass. Right, yes, yes. Something like that. Anyway,
[00:01:39] he's going to find his way back and then you know, bow before God and I was going to be good and then he gets to be king again or something. And then that happened and he was like
[00:01:47] you, yo, yo, yo, you guys. Right. Kind of like, share the good news. But I'm a little skeptical about the validity of this account. Oh for sure, for sure. You know, it's just a bit, just a bit.
[00:02:00] Not only that it didn't happen because obviously, but the fact that he even a little bit felt this way and wrote this kind of stuff. No, this whole book so far has been all about like making
[00:02:13] an epicness or bow before their God. Yah, way, right? And I'm like why this doesn't make any fucking sense to me. Yeah. But okay, I feel like this is just like people in the future after
[00:02:25] the Babylonian exile going, yeah, he totally fucking loved God. You see how much he loved God. He loved my life. And he came around at the end. Yeah. You should too, guys. So anyway, that was the
[00:02:39] just, oh Daniel chapter four. It was. Which means that today we're getting into Daniel chapter five, but something that's really funny that I have to say before you stop the recording here is my notes
[00:02:52] all say Zikil and so I've been trying so fucking hard to say Ziannual. Yeah. Yeah. That's the one. So when you said Daniel chapter four, I saw it says Zikil and my notes and I was like, oh shit.
[00:03:10] Okay, yes, yes. Daniel chapter five, let's do it. All right. All right, we are getting into Daniel Big D chapter five. Yes, we are. Okay. Yeah. And before we
[00:03:29] start that I need to say as I do, that this book is divided into two parts. We are in the first part, which is chapters one through six and they are a set of six court tales. Okay.
[00:03:43] Talk about what it's like to be at court. Right. What's kind of like the introduction to the Daniel and crew. Right. Daniel and his homies. Yeah. Yeah. And then the second part is chapter seven
[00:03:55] through 12, which are for a pocalyptic vision. Okay. Good time. So we are still in the court tales before we get into the apocalyptic vision. All right. And also, and thus far, the continuity of
[00:04:08] these stories has been piss poor. I'm so actually glad that you said that because I was about to say one more note before I move on. Chapter five is out of place. Of course it is. I don't think
[00:04:21] there's been a single one in place. No. Actually though this one is noted as being out of place. Wow. So specifically this one's worse than the others. Yes. Yes. It should come in after the
[00:04:34] seventh and eighth chapters. Okay. This makes some of the chronology of the story hard to follow and like who's father and who's son and stuff like that. So just wanted to kind of put that out there
[00:04:47] before we get into this. But if we waited until seven and eight, then we're into the apocalyptic vision stuff. Right? Yeah. I just wanted to put that kind of in there just to say it.
[00:04:59] So we'll see what happens. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. This is Daniel chapter five. Got it. King Bell Shazar, who'd fuck day, gave a great banquet for a thousand of his nobles and drink wine with them.
[00:05:14] Okay. While Bell Shazar was drinking his wine, he gave orders to bring in the gold and silver goblets that Nebuchadnezzar, his father had taken from the temple in Jerusalem so that the
[00:05:27] king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines might drink from them. Okay. So we're a generation on here. Hmm. Might be in a couple generations because from what I was reading, Nebuchadnezzar is not his actual father. It's one of his forefathers like his grandfather or even
[00:05:46] great grandfather. Got it. So but wait we're still supposed to still assume that the Daniels alive here or what's I honestly don't know. Okay. But let us keep in mind that these kings
[00:05:58] did not like stay on the throne for like decades and decades a decade, that case before they died. Right. So it is possible that Daniel did outlive many kings. And also we don't know yet but this
[00:06:10] is also supposed to be among the apocalyptic visions. So this might be set in a time that you know as a head. So yeah, I just wanted to put that it's not his daddy. Got it. Yeah. It's just like
[00:06:23] remember that time when one of the grandfather's Nebuchadnezzar like he took those golden silver goblets. I'm going to drink out of that. You want to drink with me? All you thousand people? Right.
[00:06:34] Yeah. So he's about to you know do some shit. Sure. Okay. Yeah. And he's going to have his wives and his conkembines drink from them as well. Got it. So they brought in the gold godlets that have
[00:06:46] been taken from the temple of God in Jerusalem and the king and his nobles, his wives and his conkebines drink from them as they drink the wine. They praised the gods of gold and silver of bronze, iron,
[00:07:00] wood and stone. So apparently Nebuchadnezzar taking you know, chain that the that Yahweh is the god of all gods and the most you know high and the feeling didn't get passed down. Yeah. But I mean,
[00:07:14] it didn't even get passed down on the Jews. Right. So no, I know. You know like you really expect that the Babylonians gave a fuck. But this is like I think that aspect of of the accounts in the
[00:07:27] Bible right? Of Yahweh of God. Whatever. That's partly what makes it so not believable. Right. Like if there was a god that truly felt like it was God, these people would recognize that fact. Right.
[00:07:42] Right. And they try to write these things to where it feels like people are recognizing it, but it never actually happens. Right. So that's what bothers me about the whole you know, the whole recounting of these stories where they're talking about Yahweh and God and how people
[00:08:00] react to him. Right. So all right. So they're all drinking out of those public and they're praising the gods of golden silver and all that what what. Okay. Suddenly, the fingers of a human hand
[00:08:14] appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall near the lampstand in the royal palace. The King watched the hand as it wrote. Yeah. Did you would have a fucking hand appeared and started writing
[00:08:28] on plaster. This is actually a very famous chapter for some of the things that we're going to learn in this. Okay. All right. Yeah. His face, uh, belchazar. Yeah. His face turned pale and he was so
[00:08:40] frightened that his legs became weak and his knees were knocking. The King summoned the enchanters astrologers and diviners. Then he said to these wise men of Babylon, whoever reads this writing
[00:08:53] and tells me what it means will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around his neck. And he will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom. Just to stay to that loud, purple was
[00:09:04] a very sought after coveted color in those times because it was very hard to make. It was hard to get a hold of which meant that if you had it that you were a rich mother fucker. Right. Right. So
[00:09:14] yeah. I just want to make sure I said that out loud. No, that is good to point out. Yes. Then all the King's wise men came in and all the King's horses, but they could not read the writing
[00:09:25] or tell the King what it meant. So King belchazar became even more terrified and his face grew more pale. His nobles were baffled. The queen, hearing the voices of the King and his nobles,
[00:09:39] came into the banquet hall. May the King live forever. She said, don't be a long, don't look so pale. There is a man in your kingdom who has the spirit of the Holy Gods and
[00:09:50] I'm assuming we're talking about Daniel again, which okay. I'm just going to throw this out there, but he's already done some pretty apparently amazing things. We regard to one of his ancestors
[00:10:03] be his father or grandfather or whatever. Right. You would think that this guy would be pretty well Daniel will be pretty well known in the kingdom as far as the ability to divine things about weird circumstances. This is at least a generation later and
[00:10:24] Nebuchadnezzar didn't necessarily pass these stories down. His children. There's that. The queen who's like, hang on, hang on. Let's call this one dude. She was very likely one of the either brides or concupines of the previous King's before Belchazar.
[00:10:46] She would maybe even remember Daniel herself from the time of Nebuchadnezzar. One more note is that it's suspected maybe that the time of this story Daniel was supposed to be like 80 years old. He's no longer a kid, so this is like a lifetime later.
[00:11:12] That's why the chronology of this story is very difficult because we just got through with Nebuchadnezzar in his prime doing his thing and now all of a sudden we're several generations down. There was a man in your kingdom who has the spirit of the Holy Gods and him
[00:11:29] in the time of your father or grandfather or for father or whatever the fuck we're calling him today. He was found to have insight and intelligence and wisdom like that of the gods. Your father or
[00:11:43] for father or grandfather or whatever, King Nebuchadnezzar appointed him chief of the magicians and chanters astrologers and diviners. He did this because Daniel whom the king called Belchazar just to make sure that he was a Hebrew renamed with a Babylonian name.
[00:12:04] Was found to have a keen mind and knowledge and understanding and also the ability to interpret dreams, explain riddles and solve difficult problems, call for Daniel and he will tell you what the writing means. The writing on the wall, which is where that phrase originated.
[00:12:27] Daniel was brought before the king and the king said to him, are you Daniel one of the like exiles my father the king brought from Judah? Yeah, I have heard that the spirit of the gods is in you and like that you have insider
[00:12:42] whatever intelligence outstanding wisdom that kind of thing. True. Yeah, false fiction. True. Okay. Yeah I guess. No doubt. The wise men and enchanters were brought before me to read this writing and tell me what it means but they were idiots. They could not explain it.
[00:13:02] They're one pump. You know? I do I do have a question though like we're talking about maybe like he's in his A. B. He's 70s or 80s, right? The exile only lasted like 70 or 80 years. So we're like
[00:13:15] right at the end of like the court. According to this we're right near the end of the exiles. He was 15 when he came on board. Right. So I mean at the very least we only got like maybe another
[00:13:25] 15 or 20 years. Right. Right. Exactly. Well let me I'm just I'm just trying to place this in 15. This chapter and then your answers will be no your questions will be answered. Okay answers will be questioned. Okay. Now I have heard that you Daniel are able to give interpretations
[00:13:45] and to like solve difficult problems or whatever if you can read this writing and tell me what it means you'll be clothed in purple. You have a gold chain placed around your neck and you'll be made
[00:13:57] the third highest ruler in the kingdom. I love as it came to repeat my fucking self. Right. Word for word, you know? It's it's the coolest. Yeah. It's my favorite thing. Sure. Then Daniel
[00:14:08] answered the king. You may keep your gifts for yourself and give your rewards to someone else who gives a shit. It doesn't say who gives a shit. Right. Just as someone else. Yeah. Nevertheless
[00:14:19] I will read the writing for the king and tell him what it means. So he's going to read the writing on the wall. He's going to read the writing on the wall. Okay. Your majesty, the most high
[00:14:28] god gave your father, Nevicadnezzar, sovereignty and greatness and glory and splendor because of the high position he gave him all the nations and peoples of every language dreaded and feared him.
[00:14:41] Those the king wanted to put to death. He put to death. Those he wanted to spare. He spared. Those he wanted to promote. He promoted and those he wanted to humble. He humbled. That is right. It's
[00:14:53] almost like your magic and you're a prophet. You could tell what was written without it seen it. But when his heart became arrogant and hardened with pride, he was deposed from his royal
[00:15:06] throne and stripped of his glory. He was made to eat, you know, grass. Right. He was driven away from people and given the mind of an animal. He lived with the wild donkeys and ate grass like an
[00:15:19] ox. I mean, that's what the Bible says. I don't I don't believe this but okay. And his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, the dew to heaven until he acknowledged that the most high
[00:15:31] god is sovereign over all kingdom's on earth and sets over them anyone he wishes. But you, belshe's are his son grandson, whatever. Have not humbled yourself though you knew all of this.
[00:15:45] Yeah, dumb shit. Okay. Are you ready to hear what I'm about to lay down sir? I suppose he probably you're a king but I'm going to tell you some shit. Right. Okay. Yeah. Instead,
[00:15:56] you have set yourself up against the Lord of heaven. You had the goblets from his temple brought to you. Like you did this on purpose. You knew what you were doing fuck-based. Right. Okay? Yeah. And you and your nobles, your wives and your concivines drink wine from them.
[00:16:13] Ug can you even? You praised the gods of silver and gold of bronze iron wood and stone which cannot see or hear or understand. But you did not honor the god who holds in his hand your life
[00:16:27] and all your ways. Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription. This is the inscription that was written. Okay. Meaning, meaning, tickled person. I'm sorry. Why? Meaning, many, tickled person. This is what it actually says in the book. Yeah. Okay. All right. Similar to
[00:16:46] Amy, Amy, Amy, my name is okay. Okay. Yeah. Amy, Amy, Amy, tickled person. He's going to translate. Yeah. Okay. Here is what these words mean, ready? Yeah. I'm ready. And apologies if I mispronounced them. Let's go ahead and assume my dead. Yeah. Right. Meaning, God has numbered the
[00:17:04] days of your reign and brought it to an end. Mm-hmm. Tekle, you have been weighed on the scales and been found wanting. Uh-huh. Pairies, your kingdom is divided and given to the needs and
[00:17:19] presions. Mm-hmm. Then, a Bellscholau, Sars command, you know, the King Guy. Right. Um, Daniel was clothed and purple. The gold chain was placed around his neck and he was proclaimed. Okay. Okay. The
[00:17:31] third highest ruler in the kingdom. No, no, no, no, let me finish. Let me just finish. All right. I got one sentence left. Yeah. Yeah. That very night, guess what happened? I have no idea. Bellscholau's
[00:17:42] are King of the Babylonians was mother fucking slain and Jerry is the need to go over the kingdom at the age of 60 to the end. Oh, fuck sake. Yeah. No, the needs and the Persians they got. They're
[00:17:54] there having a dinner and then see gets murdered and then the needs take over. What? What? That was the downfall of the Babylonian kingdom. That was not how the kingdom's in. You
[00:18:04] was getting murdered. That was the kingdom. Oh my God. The the needs and the Persians. I'm, yeah, I'm sure they didn't just walk in. Right. Right. So whole war. No, that's what I'm saying. But
[00:18:13] they're saying that that night is, it was for told before dude went to bed moreover. I am not. I'm not the the fact okay. If Daniel walked in and told him your kingdom sucks in his ending soon.
[00:18:27] Right. He's not going to make him the third highest in the land. In fact he lied. Enough in prison or dead. Yeah. Yeah. Or chopped into pieces or get the fuck back in
[00:18:37] that furnace. I don't know why my forefather let you out. Right. Yeah. Although he wasn't one of the ones in the furnace. True. But yeah, that just seems very unrealistic. Yeah. And complete. No,
[00:18:50] not just like a little bit but like a lot. There are so many times though and we've said this before throughout Daniel's especially. Yeah. When people just walk right up to the king and they're
[00:18:59] like, yo king, let me tell you to your face some shit. You right here. And I'm like, hey, no, you did not get in the king's face. Right. You didn't. You just didn't. Right. And be that is not what
[00:19:11] the fuck you said. Yeah. See if you did, you did not live to tell this motherfucking story. Right. So three ways that I a dumbass call shit on you. Well, and this is why, you know, the fact that this ridden ridden hundreds of years after the Babylonian exile,
[00:19:28] it's just people like wishfully thinking this is what happened with regard to their God in this moment. And I get it. It's a great, pure good story for your people. Right? Like you have these heroes
[00:19:40] doing these things to these kings that they have horded. Right. But it's not real. It's not even remotely realistic. It's just a story that you would tell as a fun, you know, our God is awesome.
[00:19:55] And this is what had, you know, this is how it went down totally. You know, but it's not true. And it doesn't even, it doesn't ring true. It doesn't, there's no, there's no believability about
[00:20:04] about it. There are some quote unquote scholars who have questions about what language the words were written in. I guess I don't know if those words are Hebrew or Latin. I suspect Latin would be more
[00:20:21] likely but who the fuck knows? Sure. I mean, somebody knows, but it's not me. Right. Right. And I can't remember what I read about it. But anyway, there was a question about why he had
[00:20:33] all his fucking wise men and whatever in the room with him and not one of them could read the words. Yeah. And the answer to that actually does kind of make sense if it was something that only
[00:20:44] Daniel could read, it was something that it was likely that only Jewish could read. Okay. And it was not favorable to be familiar or to claim familiarity with that language. Got it. So even if any of them did know how to read those words, they would not have
[00:21:04] wanted to come forward and said, hey, I can read that. That says your days are fucking numbered. Got it. Yeah. Okay. So I thought that was an interesting little tidbit. Right. I mean, sure. In a very convoluted stupid story. Right. Right. Yeah. I'm trying to pull interesting
[00:21:21] factoids like that's where we get the writing is on the wall. Okay. And if you can read the writing on the wall, like okay, when we say the writings on the wall what we mean is, um, you know,
[00:21:32] it's very clear what's going to happen. When you say you can read the writing on the wall, you're saying we all know exactly what's going to happen. Right. So okay. Yep. Well, it's interesting
[00:21:45] that to know some of the origins behind that same at the very least. I mean, you need to learn Skateko. That was my favorite too. Yeah. Yeah. You know I'm a sucker for words.
[00:21:55] All right. Well, that was Daniel chapter five. Sure. Spuck was. I have an idea that the next one is kind of a famous chapter. But we're going to have to wait till next week to find out what that is. Yeah.
[00:22:08] So that'll be on Monday. That'll be a Monday, uh, but in between now and then. So we got to tomorrow we're going to be doing our Q&A Saturday. Right. And then on Sunday, we're going to be doing
[00:22:19] our Patreon. And then I will get the weekly wrap up together and then on Monday. We'll be back with Daniel chapter six. All right. We'll see you then. Bye.
