Ezekiel Chapter 19: Bible Study by Atheists

Ezekiel Chapter 19: Bible Study by Atheists

Join us for a biblical roast in our latest episode, where we dive into the lion's den of Ezekiel Chapter 19 and tear apart the allegory of Judah's crumbling monarchy. From the self-proclaimed infallibility of scripture to the chaotic reigns of Judah's kings, we're exposing the mane event of ancient melodrama. Forget divine inspiration—this episode is a divine intervention. We're unraveling scripture with the same clarity and coherence as a Nickelback concept album. So, if you're craving a dose of heretical humor and want to witness us dissect Judah's feline fiasco while planning our next episode in real-time (because who needs organization?), this one's for you. Get ready to lament with us—or at us—because either way, we're making biblical history slightly less holy and a lot more entertaining.

[00:01:15] Welcome to sacrilegious discourse. I'm husband and I'm wife together

[00:01:19] We're reading the Bible for the very first time we grew up without religion and wanted to know what all the fuss was about

[00:01:25] Well, what do we learn so far that God is a dick and apparently some people believe in talking donkeys

[00:01:32] We're not trying to pass ourselves off as experts

[00:01:34] Nope

[00:01:34] We're just reading the Bible for the first time and given our first take reaction if you'd like to join us in this venture

[00:01:40] You might consider starting that episode one otherwise jump in wherever you like. All right. Let's go read the Bible

[00:01:46] Yeah, let's get to it

[00:01:49] I

[00:01:51] Wife do you remember what happened yesterday and where the hell we are today?

[00:01:56] Well yesterday, we read Ezekiel chapter 18. We sure as fuck dead and in that chapter

[00:02:03] We actually were introduced to a new concept in the Old Testament that we hadn't come across before which was

[00:02:10] Personal responsibility and not being punished for other people's sins as in as in the sins of our fathers, right?

[00:02:17] Yeah, or visited upon us. It was very Jesusy sounding like what the fuck is happening, right?

[00:02:23] And I'm like, okay

[00:02:26] So all of a sudden as Ezekiel gets this new message from God and is like so no more

[00:02:32] You know 10 generational punishment things going on, right and I'm like

[00:02:37] Did you just rewrite the Bible Zeke, right? Yeah

[00:02:40] What's going on? I feel like enough people complained and they're like you need to change that bit and they're like, okay

[00:02:47] Whatever whatever will meet you be God and see we from the idols man, but it's God God supposed to be infallible, right?

[00:02:55] Unchangeable. Yeah, and and yet this is a big one. Yeah, it's huge

[00:02:59] It is pretty huge and again like it's it's so big that it's like the whole difference between the Old Testament and the New Testament

[00:03:06] Right. Yeah, except for that here. It isn't Ezekiel, right? It just threw me off guard

[00:03:10] I wasn't expecting to come across it yet

[00:03:12] I was waiting for the New Testament, right? You know, yeah, but it's right there very strange crazy

[00:03:18] Before we get into what we're doing today. I do want to mention

[00:03:22] That we are in the midst of our patreon drive where we're trying to get to a $400 per month level

[00:03:27] To take care of some of the needs that we have for our podcast right now and we do have

[00:03:32] I've got more shout outs to get to do after today, but we've got a new patron that I want to shout out today

[00:03:38] And that is Kyla

[00:03:39] Kyla! Kyla M. Just signed up as a new patron

[00:03:43] And they are I didn't hear anything from them

[00:03:47] But I'm hoping that they must like our podcast and we like you. Thank you so much Kyla. So sweet

[00:03:54] Thank you. Yeah, and I hope that we see you around town and the

[00:03:59] Patreons and the discords and that you come say hi and hang out with us. Definitely

[00:04:04] Yeah, we couldn't do this without your help and and everybody else's help that's on patreon you guys are absolutely incredible

[00:04:12] Phenomenal and the response that we're getting

[00:04:14] While we still need more

[00:04:16] Has been absolutely out of this world. So I thank you all for chipping in what you're able to do

[00:04:23] And if you are still out there thinking hey, you know, I might help them

[00:04:27] We could still use your help even a dollar a month goes far. It does. Yeah when you add it all up

[00:04:33] You know like it's a collective effort, you know and we really do appreciate you guys more than you could possibly imagine

[00:04:39] So thank you Kyla. It was it was amazing. So thank you. Yes. Thank you Kyla

[00:04:45] That being said we just got done reading Ezekiel chapter 17. No 18. Jesus. I'm sorry

[00:04:53] 18 yes, which means that today we're getting into Ezekiel chapter 19. All right, let's do this Okey-dokey

[00:06:32] All right here. We are hopping into easy Kyle chapter 19 whereas I like to call it a z keel chapter 19 big E

[00:06:43] Here we go. All right

[00:06:45] I believe we're gonna be reading a

[00:06:48] Lamentation what the what's up with this? We're doing proverbs and and

[00:06:52] Parables and parables and

[00:06:55] Lamentations and there's a lot of weird crap going on in this chapter. It's so old testament

[00:07:03] With a new testament font. Yeah, right? Yeah, like this is all kind of like a z keel is definitely

[00:07:10] One of the weirder books

[00:07:12] Read thus far because it's like what everybody accused nickel back of being like all over the page

[00:07:20] Couldn't pick a style and just stick to it right right like when I woke up one day and everybody hated

[00:07:27] Nickelback. I was like why what happened and everybody was like no

[00:07:32] We've always hated them because they can't pick a style there. They just

[00:07:37] One song has nothing to do with the next and they can't pick a style

[00:07:41] And I was like but that's cool

[00:07:43] And I didn't get that memo. Yeah, and I still like nickel back so fuck off

[00:07:48] But anyway, um, yeah z keel is just like I don't know what I'm writing

[00:07:53] So I'm gonna just throw everything at you and hope some spaghetti sticks to the wall right right very weird

[00:08:00] Yeah, take up a lament concerning the princes of israel

[00:08:05] And say

[00:08:06] Okay, ready. I'm ready. We got some parable shit coming up great. Yeah, I can't wait

[00:08:11] What a lioness was your mother among the lions

[00:08:15] She laid down among them and reared her cubs. I have some notes

[00:08:19] Okay, she brought up one of her cubs and he became a strong lion

[00:08:24] He learned to tear the prey and he became a man eater

[00:08:28] The nations heard about him and he was trapped in their pit

[00:08:32] They led him with hooks to the land of egypt

[00:08:35] All I could think of is that last sentence you read just completely went through my brain without processing because

[00:08:41] The only thing that was going through my brain was oh here. She comes watch out boys. She'll chew you up

[00:08:48] Oh here she comes. She's a man eater. She's a man eater

[00:08:53] Yeah

[00:08:53] When she saw her hope unfulfilled her expectation gone because you know, they

[00:08:59] Took him away to egypt right she took another of her cubs and made him a strong lion

[00:09:05] Okay, he prowled among the lions for he was now a strong lion

[00:09:10] He learned to tear the prey and he became a man eater. That's look out boys. Yeah, she'll chew you up

[00:09:15] Yeah, he broke down their strongholds and devastated their towns

[00:09:20] The land and all who were in it were terrified by his

[00:09:24] Riding

[00:09:25] Are we talking about this is israel we're talking about right or juda or something

[00:09:29] So what was happening?

[00:09:31] Stop and why don't I just uh read some notes. Yeah that yeah, I'm sure okay

[00:09:37] So although the prophet realized that god's judgment on the sinful people of juda was fitting

[00:09:44] He felt sorry for those judaean kings who fell victim to foreign invaders

[00:09:50] Okay, okay juda. He's comparing juda

[00:09:54] To be like a mother lion whose young lions became kings to rollover nations

[00:10:00] Okay, yeah, however when egypt in 609 bce gained control of the region

[00:10:07] jahoa has

[00:10:09] Who succeeded his father josia as king of jerusalem for three months? Sure

[00:10:13] Okay, and remember we liked josia. He was the good boy

[00:10:16] Okay, okay tried to do away with all the idols in the high places right right? Yeah, but then he was replaced by jahoa has

[00:10:23] His son was deposed by ferro nico the second of egypt

[00:10:28] Right. He was captured bound and taken to egypt where he later died

[00:10:32] So that was the first lion that they were referring to okay

[00:10:35] Okay, the next quote unquote lion had all the fierce and aggressive characteristics of juda's next king

[00:10:43] Joaquin mo okay, okay, right?

[00:10:46] So then in verse five where it says when she saw her hope

[00:10:51] Her expectation gone. She took another of her cubs and made him a strong lion, right? Yeah

[00:10:57] It's like what's all these lions what but here's the thing two of the last four kings of juda

[00:11:03] Jehovah has and zedekaya. Yeah, we're born of the same mother

[00:11:08] Hamutel and the same father king josiah

[00:11:12] Interesting like i didn't really realize that somehow. No, I didn't either they were like full blood brothers

[00:11:18] So that's what it means like

[00:11:21] basically not just israel but the mother

[00:11:26] Saw one of her sons get made king and then fucked up and then so she put the next one on the throne

[00:11:34] as the next lion, okay, right and

[00:11:37] Joaquin

[00:11:38] Died not in a foreign country, but in jerusalem his son and successor

[00:11:45] Joaquina

[00:11:47] Was captured and taken prisoner to Babylon and although Joaquina

[00:11:53] Reigned only three months. He showed he had the same evil characteristics as his father

[00:11:58] Okay, okay. Yeah now um in verse nine where it says with hooks

[00:12:03] They pulled him into a cage and brought him to the king of Babylon

[00:12:06] They put him in prison so his roar was heard no longer on the mountains of israel. Okay, okay

[00:12:12] That's the fate of zedekaya the last king of juda who was appointed as a king in jerusalem in

[00:12:19] 597 bce by nebuchadnezzar the second of babelon to replace

[00:12:24] Joaquina

[00:12:26] But who later rebelled and was captured and brought before nebuchadnezzar and ribla where won

[00:12:32] His family was killed like his sons were killed before

[00:12:36] And two he was made blind and then three he was taken as prisoner to babelon until his death

[00:12:42] Got it. Okay, so this is all just talking about those fucking kings. Well, I I mean that's that's all well and good

[00:12:48] I guess but like um

[00:12:50] I feel like there's not a lot of love lost between the kings and god in previous

[00:12:57] Versions of what they did. Yeah, like I mean

[00:13:00] Yes, some of them did some good things according to god, but they all did bad things also

[00:13:04] That pretty much except for maybe like uh, joe's joe's. I was good. I think all the way tilly

[00:13:10] But like the rest of them there were some issues, right? Yeah, like they they weren't perfect

[00:13:15] So like what is this pining over lost kings? I don't understand it

[00:13:19] It's not like pining over the kings themselves. It's pining over

[00:13:26] juda

[00:13:27] Having lost their kings having lost their way and thus lost their kings. Okay, and it's it's more about

[00:13:37] um

[00:13:38] a leaderless people

[00:13:40] God watching like we keep having these kings go up and

[00:13:45] Either, you know be killed or do evil in the side of the lord and you know

[00:13:50] Our kings can't get their shit together and this just sucks

[00:13:54] So it's almost like god's acknowledging that um, israel had bad bad leadership

[00:13:59] But let us never forget though that in judges they chose to have their own kings

[00:14:06] Yeah, that's what the whole kings and chronicles was about sure. So god's like

[00:14:11] Yeah, but you guys did this to your fucking selves

[00:14:15] So he's like you have bad leaders because

[00:14:19] Your leaders are human and

[00:14:22] Look, this sounds like I am like a bible scholar like explaining the bible to you and like I

[00:14:28] Understand it because I believe it and that is exactly not the case. No, I understand what you're saying

[00:14:34] Like I get what you're saying

[00:14:36] I and

[00:14:37] I don't know how I feel about that because I also know that god has talked about in the bible

[00:14:42] You know that he is able to change people's hearts. He's able to make things happen

[00:14:47] You know, he's all knowing knows everything's going to happen. Not in this chapter. Whatever

[00:14:52] I don't fucking care. It doesn't matter but

[00:14:54] He he doesn't do those things like instead he

[00:14:58] Let's things happen to the point where he has to kill off most of his people right and

[00:15:03] Including like he was talking about killing children, you know, like I mean, they it's bullshit. It's bullshit. No totally totally

[00:15:10] But this is mostly um

[00:15:13] The or what's his name azekiel talking. Okay. So all right. Well, that makes a little better sense. I guess

[00:15:18] Yeah, I mean he's like talking about

[00:15:21] You know

[00:15:23] The kings having

[00:15:25] Not been the wisest choice and not done what they were supposed to do and leaving the people

[00:15:31] A mess. Okay, so whatever sure

[00:15:34] Okay, so then the nations came against him that second lion

[00:15:37] Those from regions round about they spread their net for him and he was trapped in their pit with hooks

[00:15:42] They pulled them into a cage and brought them to the king of babelon. They put them in prison

[00:15:46] So his roar was heard no longer on the mountains of israel. So my notes got a little bit ahead

[00:15:52] But but that

[00:15:54] Still shed light on it. Yeah, right. So now we're caught up to the notes that I had

[00:15:59] So um now we're going on your mother was like a vine in your vineyard planted by the water

[00:16:06] So, I mean we're going back to the comparison to vines and

[00:16:10] Trubs and branches and shit, right?

[00:16:13] It was fruitful and full of branches because of abundant water

[00:16:17] Its branches were strong fit for a ruler's scepter

[00:16:21] It towered high above the thick foliage

[00:16:25] Conspicuous for its height and for its many branches

[00:16:28] But it was uprooted in fury and thrown to the ground

[00:16:33] The east wind made it shrivel so that would be you know invaders from the east

[00:16:38] It was stripped of its fruit its strong branches withered and consumed them

[00:16:43] Now it is planted in the desert in a dry thirsty land

[00:16:48] Fire spread from one of its main branches and consumed its fruit

[00:16:52] No strong branches left on it fit for a ruler's scepter

[00:16:56] This is a lament and is to be used as

[00:16:59] A lament the end but make sure you use this as a better use this as a mother fucking lament

[00:17:05] If you don't use it as a lament, it wouldn't be a lament. So right that would be tragic

[00:17:09] This is not a fucking knock knock joke over here guys

[00:17:13] Don't do it

[00:17:15] Okay. Yeah, this is not what the party clown is going to recite to the kids birthday. Right. Okay. Yeah

[00:17:22] This is don't do it. Right. Okay. This is not a graduation speech

[00:17:27] No, this is not a doctorate dissertation. No, okay

[00:17:31] This is not a state of the union address by the president. Right, right? Okay. I'm telling you all the things

[00:17:37] It's not it's not a driver's license. Nope. Yeah

[00:17:41] So these are all the things. It's not but it's definitely a lament. It's a fucking lament y'all

[00:17:46] So, you know use it as a lament. Yeah, definitely. So just to um finish up where we were

[00:17:52] Um, juda is pictured also as a strong healthy vine and her kings as

[00:17:58] Fruitful branches of that vine. Okay. Okay

[00:18:02] And the vine then withers and has taken along with its last rightful king

[00:18:07] And that would have been Joaquin

[00:18:11] Not its last king. It's last rightful king. Okay. All right fair enough. I know because we were both like wait a minute

[00:18:17] Yeah, there was Zedekaya, right? Yeah. Yeah into the dry and thirsty land of Babylon

[00:18:22] And then back in Jerusalem the king appointed by Babylon proved to be a fire who destroyed the little that remained of the vine

[00:18:29] That's Zedekaya. Ah, okay

[00:18:32] Though through Zedekaya both the nation and the Davidic line of kings came to an end

[00:18:38] and I still say

[00:18:40] A little bit of justice for Zedekaya. He was in a no win situation

[00:18:45] There was no way as a puppet king trying to make more than one party happy

[00:18:51] and stave off

[00:18:53] invasions from all sides, right?

[00:18:55] He was never going to make a good leader. No, and I think he did attempt, you know

[00:19:00] Based on our reading of the bible. He did attempt a couple of times to kind of take the

[00:19:05] Israeli side of the the conflict between Babylon and Israel

[00:19:10] You know and and it didn't work out so well for him no matter what he did

[00:19:13] Right people that didn't like him for taking Babylon's side or Babylon fought against them for taking

[00:19:19] You know judeh's side, right exactly and I mean let's not forget this whole time

[00:19:24] The kings just before him had been either placed on the throne or

[00:19:30] Um been killed by Egypt

[00:19:32] So the same time that he's dealing with fucking Babylon and he's got Jeremiah this goddamn

[00:19:39] Double agent running around fucking shit up. Yeah, he's also

[00:19:43] Legit still dealing with Egypt, right, you know

[00:19:46] Like let's not pretend that it was only Babylon, right, right?

[00:19:50] So, you know, are you guys gonna help us? Are you guys our friends? Yes. Oh, but no. Oh, yeah

[00:19:56] Oh, but no, right. Yeah, so I mean I just feel like he's got a bum rap here

[00:20:01] I mean, yeah, like you said it was not he couldn't have been easy

[00:20:04] There was there was nothing he could have done

[00:20:07] Yeah, so I I just think that is shitty to say like zedekaya fucked that up

[00:20:11] Did he or was it just a shitty situation? Right?

[00:20:14] Like he was a shitty it was a definitely a shitty situation

[00:20:18] Yeah, for sure and also since he was placed there by Babylon

[00:20:22] I think it's really shitty to be like, oh my god

[00:20:26] He was totally doing what Babylon wanted like yeah, no kidding

[00:20:32] Babylon put him there. What was he supposed to do? It's fucking

[00:20:37] Judah against goddamn Babylon with the chaldeans and all the other assyrians and shit

[00:20:43] Right, you know fuck off. I'm sorry. I just have a lot of sympathy for him. Yeah. No, I got it. Yeah

[00:20:49] So, okay, we're done with that though. Awesome. All right. Well, so that was uh, ezekiel chapter 19

[00:20:55] Yes, it sure as fuck was and don't forget to use it as a lament

[00:20:59] It's it's gonna be a lament guys. I just lamented but was angry. I don't know

[00:21:05] You know decide for yourself if anger can be an element

[00:21:10] I sure yeah, maybe I mean did I do it wrong? I don't know you decide

[00:21:16] But we'll let them yeah

[00:21:20] Let us know. All right. Thank thanks for joining us tonight guys. That was ezekiel chapter 19

[00:21:25] And we will be back tomorrow with

[00:21:28] Um, well, I have a question for you. Oh, we're the oh tomorrow is saturday. Yeah

[00:21:35] So are we gonna go ahead and do a zekiel chapter 20?

[00:21:39] Or are we gonna do a q&a over four chapters?

[00:21:43] Or are we gonna do both? Are we gonna?

[00:21:47] Um, do the q&a on sunday instead of saturday because it's a book club

[00:21:53] I honestly don't know. Um, so we'll have to discuss that
