Ezekiel Chapter 25: Bible Study by Atheists

Ezekiel Chapter 25

Join us for another sacrilegious rollercoaster as we dissect Ezekiel Chapter 25 with our trademark snark and skepticism. Ever wondered how Samuel L. Jackson's badass "Pulp Fiction" monologue ties into ancient biblical prophecies? Spoiler: It's as absurd as it sounds! This episode, we delve into God's petty vendetta against Moab, Edom, and the Philistines, examining divine justice (or the lack thereof) while mocking the inconsistency of punishing smaller nations and letting big bullies like Egypt off the hook. Plus, we celebrate Quentin Tarantino's creative genius and draw hilarious parallels between Ezekiel’s rants and Jules Winfield's iconic threats. Don't miss our cheeky analysis and razor-sharp commentary on this wild intersection of scriptures and scripts.

[00:01:15] Welcome to sacrilegious discourse. I'm husband and I'm wife together

[00:01:19] We're reading the Bible for the very first time we grew up without religion and wanted to know what all the fuss was about

[00:01:25] Well, what do we learn so far that God is a dick and apparently some people believe in talking donkeys

[00:01:32] We're not trying to pass ourselves off as experts. Nope

[00:01:34] We're just reading the Bible for the first time and given our first take reaction

[00:01:38] If you'd like to join us in this venture you might consider starting that episode one

[00:01:42] Otherwise jump in wherever you like. All right. Let's go read the Bible. Yeah, let's get to it

[00:01:48] I

[00:01:50] Husband wife, do you remember what we did yesterday and where the hell we are today?

[00:01:55] Well yesterday we read Ezekiel chapter 24 we sure as fuck did and in that chapter God was boiling the

[00:02:04] Jerusalem the Jerusalemites. Yeah, those guys

[00:02:09] Judah Judah was boiling Judah and Jerusalem Judeans the Judeans. Yes

[00:02:14] And they were like choice me and whatever and he's gonna boil them and yeah, it was bad

[00:02:18] He's gonna he's gonna kill him and also his wife died or something

[00:02:22] That was Ezekiel. I mean God was boiling the people in Jerusalem

[00:02:26] Yeah, Ezekiel's wife was gonna die when that's like a prophecy when this all comes down or whatever got it

[00:02:32] Which struck me. I thought she died

[00:02:36] She died and then he was like don't cry about it

[00:02:40] What I see is that it was they will dice

[00:02:44] They will die it was part of the prophecy. Yeah, they will die but she dies first

[00:02:49] No, no, no, no, no, okay. He was part of the prophecy

[00:02:53] Okay, she will die with Jerusalem when they get attacked so it was part of the prophecy of yeah

[00:02:57] But he gave the prophecy the day that they got attacked

[00:03:04] Okay, yeah, okay, you might be right you might be right

[00:03:08] I apologize I could be I could absolutely be wrong there

[00:03:12] So I thought it was a prophecy like cuz we're doing prophecy. Yeah

[00:03:16] Well, it was in that he's like your wife's gonna die and when that happens don't cry about it

[00:03:23] Cuz that's gonna be what you tell those folks and then when those folks come around asking you why aren't you crying and shit then

[00:03:32] He's like you're you're gonna get it too got it and then

[00:03:36] He told them that on the same day that

[00:03:41] Jerusalem was being boiled. Yeah

[00:03:43] Yeah

[00:03:44] All right

[00:03:46] So before we get in well, no that was a sorry is he you know what I cut you off before and I'm cutting you off again

[00:03:54] To tell you why I cut you off before

[00:03:56] You were gonna say it struck you. Oh, yeah, yeah, it struck me that

[00:04:01] Ezekiel's wife

[00:04:02] I don't think has been mentioned thus far in Ezekiel

[00:04:05] I don't think so either and it just struck me as weird that that was like some

[00:04:09] You would think if it was something Ezekiel would have cared about we would have heard about her prior to chapter 24

[00:04:15] Yeah, I don't know it just it feels and also what does his wife think about when he had to lay on the ground for a

[00:04:20] Year and a half. I still think he murdered her. You think so. Yeah, okay

[00:04:24] I think he murdered her it could be could be and then he wrote in

[00:04:27] Why he wasn't mourning. He's kind of crazy. He's very weird. He's got a lot of issues

[00:04:32] I think he's psychotic probably probably that the fucking eyeballs and the

[00:04:37] Angels and the wheels and that kind of cued me a little bit. Yeah. Yeah, I don't think he was quite right, right, right?

[00:04:44] So before we hop into what we're doing today and do you want to mention one thing?

[00:04:50] We're still doing the patreon push

[00:04:52] But I've got a new thing that I want this doesn't require you to spend any extra money

[00:04:56] So you we have a thing if you go to sacroledis discourse comm forward slash Amazon

[00:05:02] There's a link on that page to

[00:05:04] Go through to Amazon and any purchase that you purchased from that link that day will help us

[00:07:15] Alright, we are hopping into easy Kyle chapter 25 otherwise known as a z-keel chapter 25

[00:07:24] Mm-hmm, and we're gonna learn about some prophecies against all these other nations. Oh, yeah

[00:07:30] Okay, it's a really short chapter, but there's some interesting stuff in it

[00:07:34] So I'm kind of excited about one of the things because it's it addresses one of your favorite movies

[00:07:41] Oh, yeah, oh, this will be fun

[00:07:43] I actually thought that was next chapter not this chapter, but that's exciting. So you know what I'm saying

[00:07:49] Oh fuck. Yeah, I do. Oh, okay. Yeah, definitely do okay

[00:07:53] Cuz I I look this up well before we ever got like I look this up like I've been looking this up since we started reading the Bible

[00:08:00] Well, okay, go ahead and tell me what it is. It is from Pulp Fiction

[00:08:04] I

[00:08:06] Was gonna tell you it is when oh my gosh

[00:08:09] It's been years since I've seen the movie now

[00:08:11] So but it's when and I'm not prepared because I thought it was next chapter right so but it's when

[00:08:17] Samuel L. Jackson is there

[00:08:19] Jules Winfield Jules Winfield. Yeah him and

[00:08:23] What's the Jesus John Travolta?

[00:08:26] Camerabers name of the movie

[00:08:27] Whoever he is they're in the room with the three guys that were like their drug dealers or something like that

[00:08:31] They had a they had the briefcase, right? Actually, he gives that speech that you're about to address three separate times

[00:08:37] Does he really okay? All right. This is the most memorable one for me

[00:08:40] Mm-hmm, and so he quotes this verse from Ezekiel as part of his

[00:08:47] I'm gonna shoot you. I'm gonna shoot you. I I'm killing you. I'm gonna you're gonna die

[00:08:51] Well, you'll be interested to learn some stuff about this. Yeah, okay? Okay sounds great. Yeah

[00:08:57] I think I might even

[00:09:00] When we get to it, we need to like pause for a second so I can like insert because I would that was planning on inserting that

[00:09:06] Quote okay in the middle of the podcast because it to me

[00:09:09] It's very relevant. Well, it's like one of my favorite things from that movie

[00:09:13] I've seen that movie like a gazillion fucking times. I know so I've only seen it twice

[00:09:19] I hated it the first time I didn't really love it or hate it the second time

[00:09:24] But the first time I saw it under like shitty circumstances and that kind of tainted my view of it

[00:09:29] Sure, that's why I watch it again with you because I knew how much you loved it

[00:09:33] Yeah, and I was like, okay, I see why you love it, but it was still like it was too much for me

[00:09:37] Right, so I'm like, okay

[00:09:39] I mean it's not for everybody, you know, so I mean it's Quentin Tarantino. He's not everybody

[00:09:45] Yeah, so no, but I get it and I'm glad I rewatched it so that I can get it

[00:09:49] Do you remember when we were watching when we went to the movie theater to go watching glorious bastards? Yes

[00:09:53] What happened there was an old couple there? Yes, there was right behind us and

[00:10:00] They watched the like when we walked in when we walked in and we saw them you and I whispered to each other

[00:10:06] I wonder if they realize that they know this is Quentin Tarantino and are they prepared right and then

[00:10:13] They sat through the whole thing and they were like, huh on the way out

[00:10:18] They weren't like in love with it. No no in fact they were making comments about I don't that's not historically correct

[00:10:25] Yeah, they were there were making like all kinds of wrong

[00:10:29] Comments about it and we're kind of cute. It was it was and honestly

[00:10:34] I appreciated their take on it because they were coming in kind of like we're coming into the Bible not going knowing what's going

[00:10:40] All right, that's fair. They were coming into a Quentin Tarantino movie fresh

[00:10:45] Not knowing anything about it not knowing anything about him or his film style

[00:10:50] Yeah, and so it was kind of cool to hear their take and to be quite fair

[00:10:57] They did not critique the style

[00:11:00] They did not critique

[00:11:02] The goofiness in that movie they didn't critique a lot of the like over-the-top stuff

[00:11:07] It was mostly just the historical inaccuracies, which is like the least problematic thing of the movie. Yeah

[00:11:14] Yeah, so well, but at the time I think they were old enough that when we saw that they might have

[00:11:20] Been on the cusp of even he might have been on the cusp of maybe even haven't been in World War two

[00:11:24] Yeah, I don't know for sure he was definitely old enough to have been

[00:11:29] Aware of World War very yeah, if not even the age to serve right right?

[00:11:35] So yeah, they they would have had some opinions for sure for sure, but they weren't they weren't mad

[00:11:41] I don't think they were just like that wasn't right. Yeah, didn't that's not how that went right right

[00:11:48] So I just thought it was interesting. Yeah, definitely. Okay, but we're not talking about Pulp fiction

[00:11:52] No, although we are we are yeah, yeah

[00:11:54] Okay, so let's read this ready. Yeah, guess what happened

[00:11:59] Let me hold on. This is gonna be a rough one. God talk to Ezekiel probably yes

[00:12:04] The word of the Lord came to me. Yeah, Ezekiel. Yeah, son of man

[00:12:08] No, yeah, I'm your human you fucking worm set your face against the Amonites

[00:12:14] Okay, and Amonites and prophecy against them. Okay, we've got three other people. We're gonna yell that you have a quick question here

[00:12:21] Why are the Amonites gonna give two fucks? What does he feel says to them? Okay, so we're gonna get there

[00:12:27] Okay, okay. All right. Yeah, but he's yelling at four specific people for some shitty things that they did

[00:12:34] Okay, okay. This is sounds like he likes to rant a lot. That's why

[00:12:38] He totally does

[00:12:39] Okay, so say to them hear the word of the sovereign Lord

[00:12:43] This is what the sovereign Lord says he says I says I says because you said aha

[00:12:50] Over my sanctuary when it was desecrated and over the land of Israel when it was laid waste and

[00:12:56] Over the people of Judah when they went into exile

[00:13:00] Therefore bitches, I'm going to give you to the people of the East as a possession

[00:13:05] Mmm, they will set up their camps and pitch their tents among you. Yeah, they will so part of his punishment for the Israelites

[00:13:13] Was that they were gonna be the scorn and the the neighbors were gonna mock them

[00:13:20] But now that the thing that he made happen because he's God right like God makes things happen

[00:13:26] This is part of his punishment for his own people. Mm-hmm that he's enacting. Yes

[00:13:31] Now he cares what they're doing and he's going to punish them for it

[00:13:36] Yeah, is that that where we're going with this kind of yeah, I'm gonna give you a few notes on this

[00:13:41] No, I was kind of clarify irritated with God

[00:13:44] In this book and cannon because he's kind of a dick and it makes literally no sense

[00:13:49] No, not at all. So so these people they're gonna come among you. They're gonna live among you

[00:13:54] Yeah, they're gonna eat your fruit and drink your milk

[00:13:58] I will turn roba into a pasture as a capital city

[00:14:02] Yeah for camels and a mon into a resting place for sheep

[00:14:06] Then you will know that I am the Lord for this is what the sovereign Lord says

[00:14:11] Hold on I have a grazing place for camel and a resting place for sheep. That sounds rough

[00:14:17] It doesn't sound anywhere near as rough as what he says about the about you know, yeah

[00:14:22] He has said that's gonna be a wasteland and like, you know

[00:14:26] They're gonna be burned and piled up and bodies to run and these are

[00:14:31] Important cities. Yeah, and so he's saying that they're gonna be basically laid bare and they're gonna go to these nomadic Arab tribes

[00:14:39] Got it. You're not gonna be cities anymore. Okay, you're not gonna be you know hubs

[00:14:45] You're not gonna be like places of trade and quote-unquote civilization. Yeah, you're you're gonna be done

[00:14:52] You're gone. Your your land is going to be agriculture and

[00:14:57] Animals now by right so I mean to us it sounds like

[00:15:01] Idealic and like, you know postcard kind of like oh that's kind of nice sure

[00:15:07] But for them that would have been the worst

[00:15:11] Yeah, right

[00:15:13] For this is what the sovereign Lord says because you have clapped your hands and stomped your feet

[00:15:18] Rejoicing with all the malice of your heart against the land of Israel

[00:15:22] Therefore I will stretch out my hand against you and give you as plunder to the nations

[00:15:26] I will wipe you out from among the nations and exterminate you from the countries

[00:15:32] I will destroy you and you will know that I'm the Lord

[00:15:36] There's been some really rough language with regard to how they say things here lately

[00:15:41] there was the like something about the

[00:15:47] Pure or something I can't remember what it was but like a lot of this stuff feels very

[00:15:52] Nazi-ish. Yes, you know yes termination and

[00:15:57] Like they were talking about

[00:15:59] Like pure something or like it was very you had to be this one thing or else you were bad, right? Yeah

[00:16:06] I

[00:16:07] Don't like a lot of this talk because I feel like it's been enacted for really

[00:16:12] heinous things in the past

[00:16:14] Could be still in the future feels like what is happening to the Palestinians currently

[00:16:20] Yeah, so not not here for it, right

[00:16:24] So let me just tell you a little bit about what we just read before I move on okay

[00:16:28] So the Ammonites were basically punished for gloating maliciously when Judah fell okay, and like I said the land is now going to be

[00:16:36] Occupied by nomadic Arab tribes sure okay

[00:16:39] Yeah, they the Ammonites had taken wicked delight in seeing Jerusalem and its temple destroyed

[00:16:46] So now's God gonna he's gonna give them what guy? Yeah, and they're gonna be overrun by the desert tribesmen from the east

[00:16:54] Okay, and we'll hear that again is one saying the tribesmen from the east or the people from the east

[00:16:59] Okay, who will turn Ammon cities into pasture lands for their animals? So that's like what I was saying

[00:17:06] Yeah, okay, so just to kind of like simplify it

[00:17:10] They were happy and let it be known they were happy when Israel fell sure when Judah fell

[00:17:16] Yeah, so God's like fuck you for that right okay, so whatever I'm like

[00:17:21] You were supposed to had got rid of the Ammonites way back right and if you had it wouldn't have been a fucking issue

[00:17:26] But whatever right so okay now we're moving on to Moab okay, all right

[00:17:31] This is what the sovereign Lord says because Moab and Seir said look

[00:17:37] Look Judah has become like all the other nations therefore. I will expose the flink of Moab

[00:17:44] beginning at its frontier towns Beth just shemoth

[00:17:48] but all may on and

[00:17:51] Coriah

[00:17:52] They am the glory of that land okay

[00:17:55] I will give Moab along with the Ammonites to the people of the east as a possession

[00:18:01] So that the Ammonites will not be remembered among the nations

[00:18:04] And I will inflict punishment on Moab then they will know that I'm the Lord

[00:18:10] It didn't really get they were doing anything bad there. He's still talking trash about the Ammonites

[00:18:15] Like and also fuck Moab while we're at it. I'm gonna take care of Moab right so basically what happened Moab is being punished for

[00:18:22] Gloting and stating that Judah is like all other nations

[00:18:25] Which is considered to be an insult to Yahweh

[00:18:28] Cuz fuck you they are Moab's another nation, right?

[00:18:32] Right, I mean like they don't fucking care that Yahweh cares of whatever so like any nation wouldn't say that

[00:18:38] You know, right? I know I know I totally agree with you

[00:18:41] They thought that God was powerless to protect his temple from devastation

[00:18:46] So they're put it there like act was a little more egregious

[00:18:50] Like the Ammonites were just like ah-ha y'all fell. Yeah, whereas Moab was like ah-ha y'all fell and your God

[00:18:59] sucks. He's so fucking weak got it and so

[00:19:03] therefore similar to Iman the

[00:19:06] Land of Moab is gonna be given to those same tribes. Okay. Yeah, so

[00:19:11] It's basically like

[00:19:13] They pissed me off worse than you did because I'm a petty little fuck and I worry about my image

[00:19:18] Yeah, you didn't just laugh at them. You laughed at me

[00:19:20] But in the past he's cared what they think of him, you know

[00:19:23] Like these neighbors that he's talking about whatever I don't want them to think I'm evil and now he's like, you know

[00:19:29] What I don't care. I will kill you right right

[00:19:32] But not I just I don't but not all these years

[00:19:36] He could have dealt with Egypt the same way but instead he's dealing with these little tribes

[00:19:40] Well, it's because it's about political and then and military power, right? Yeah, there's nothing to do with a God

[00:19:45] It has to do with the actual

[00:19:48] Politics on the ground and the reality that they're living in but that's what I'm saying like these little itty-bitty

[00:19:54] Comparatively speaking right these little itty-bitty places. He's like okay. I'm gonna decimate you

[00:20:00] Like if you actually gave a shit about your people, why were you allowing these powerful nations Babylon?

[00:20:07] Assyrians

[00:20:09] Egypt, you know

[00:20:11] Can cananites like all of that right?

[00:20:14] Right. Chels Chels Chelsie Chaldeans. Thank you Chaldeans

[00:20:18] Like all of these huge powerful forces these nations

[00:20:23] You were too weak to knock them down because you aren't real, right?

[00:20:29] so like

[00:20:31] But that goes against the story, you know what I'm trying to say like if you really gave a shit about your people quote-unquote

[00:20:38] God, why did you allow these giant nations to kick your people around and

[00:20:43] Why is your show of force only against these little guys? Well, not only that these nations have been building for

[00:20:50] Centuries right they haven't it's not like they just popped up overnight and became superpowers. They're basically cousins too

[00:20:57] the

[00:20:58] Israelites but there was there was a long history of them getting to that point

[00:21:04] They were much more successful than the Israelites. Yeah, why were they much more successful than the Israelites?

[00:21:10] Probably because they did things better or had more resources or I don't know

[00:21:15] Or if you want to talk about magic their God seemed to be yeah, yeah sure whatever their idols were better

[00:21:21] Is what it sounds like to me yeah, like they they didn't maybe have a fear of the Lord and suck his dick thing going on

[00:21:27] Sure, they just had a you know

[00:21:29] Seeing to your little statue and fuck on the hills and occasionally burn a baby

[00:21:33] Well, and when you think about ancient gods, right?

[00:21:36] Hold on hold on. I said occasionally burn a baby and like I expected either laugh or respond

[00:21:43] Just to be clear no child sacrifice. Yeah, okay. Sorry. That's not good. Yeah, right

[00:21:49] Sorry, I did I was I was already in my thought train. So I apologize

[00:21:55] Yeah, so I don't remember what I was gonna say now

[00:21:59] it was I

[00:22:00] Think that the gods of oh when you when you think about ancient gods

[00:22:06] You don't think about Yahweh, right?

[00:22:09] Like I know that they are in that same timeframe back then but like you think of Egyptian gods or Greek gods and all this stuff

[00:22:16] Those are the ancient gods that you think of right? Yeah, at least to me you're looking in from the outside

[00:22:22] Yeah, right like that's how I always envisioned it Christianity and

[00:22:27] To be fair. I never really knew much about Judaism, right?

[00:22:31] So but Christianity to me always seemed like this newer

[00:22:35] Yeah

[00:22:37] So but and then Judaism was newer compared to the ancient gods because all they did was

[00:22:45] Combine some of the ancient shit sure. Yeah, no, it's true, but I don't even throw them in the same mix like no

[00:22:52] The God Yahweh, I don't I don't put him in that ancient God realm right? It's it didn't really become a thing for I

[00:23:00] Don't know it just it just doesn't strike me the same way

[00:23:03] And I know that that's probably our Western culture and who you know, we grew up around Christians

[00:23:08] So we only learned Christianity right in our in our subset of the world sure

[00:23:12] So that's probably just my vantage point, but from where I'm sitting

[00:23:17] It doesn't seem like Yahweh was around at the same time Thor was you know, right right so yeah

[00:23:23] But there was some overlap. Yes, there was overlap, but it was towards the end of one

[00:23:29] Before it was the beginning of the other one not necessarily like there was the the Christianity didn't take hold in I mean

[00:23:36] Are you talking about Christianity or Judaism?

[00:23:40] Right, but Judea

[00:23:42] Christianity took hold from the ancient Roman gods

[00:23:45] So there were still Romans worshiping Roman gods up until Christianity right now

[00:23:51] I get that but what I'm saying is at the beginning

[00:23:55] like from the beginning

[00:23:59] Yahweh wasn't around yet, you know what I mean, right? Yeah, that's what I meant not at the same time

[00:24:04] Okay, okay, like first came like the wrong the Greek gods even before Rome was the Greek gods sure and you know

[00:24:11] the

[00:24:14] Like Zeus and Thor and all them like them people right and

[00:24:19] Then came the Roman gods from the Greeks as Rome took over that area

[00:24:24] Sure, and Yahweh was kind of kicking it, but he was not like super big

[00:24:30] He was not like he was just like one of many. Yeah

[00:24:34] So we've taught it's a very regional God. Yeah, so yeah early on for sure

[00:24:39] Yeah, so all right. Well, we're about to get it against the Edomites. Okay, okay, right?

[00:24:44] This is what the sovereign Lord says is it?

[00:24:48] Mm-hmm. All right because Edom took revenge on Judah and became very guilty by doing so

[00:24:55] Therefore this is what the sovereign Lord says I will stretch out my hand against Edom and kill both man and

[00:25:03] Motherfucking beast. Oh, I will lay at waste and from Timon to Dayton

[00:25:08] They will fall by the sword

[00:25:10] I will take vengeance on Edom by the hand of my people Israel and they will deal with Edom in accordance with my anger and my wrath

[00:25:19] They will know my vengeance declares the sovereign Lord by the hand of his people from Israel

[00:25:26] Whatever that doesn't how they're in exile. They aren't around. I don't know but here let me read you my little sure

[00:25:32] Yeah, yeah

[00:25:33] Edoms harsh punishment is for having betrayed the agreement with Judah to fight against Babylon

[00:25:38] So they had made this agreement, right? Okay, and they were gonna help them

[00:25:41] And then they instead became a Babylonian ally taking Judean lands in the Negev

[00:25:47] Oh, the Jews themselves will be God's instrument and punishing Edom

[00:25:52] And I'm not sure how that supposed to happen. Right now that came about but that would have to be at least 70 years later, right?

[00:25:59] Yeah, however that works that didn't happen by them right away. I know right fact. Yeah, so couldn't have

[00:26:07] Don't know anything about that but that's that's what they're mad about

[00:26:11] Okay, that makes sense and I like that because it's showing that there was a bunch of political

[00:26:16] maneuvering things going on and it

[00:26:19] Tracks with everything we've read, you know, like if you read between the lines you can catch this is politics

[00:26:24] This is not a God. It's fucking politics. It's always politics

[00:26:28] Okay, now we're moving finally against the Philistines. Okay. Yeah, this is what the sovereign Lord says

[00:26:35] Because the Philistines acted in vengeance and took revenge with malice in their hearts and with ancient

[00:26:42] Hostility sought to destroy Judah

[00:26:45] Therefore, this is what the sovereign Lord says. Okay

[00:26:48] I'm about to stretch out my hand against the Philistines and I will wipe out the kerathites and

[00:26:53] Destroy those remaining along the coast

[00:26:56] You know when we talk about the people on the islands. Yeah, yeah, that's these quotes

[00:27:00] Okay, I will carry out great vengeance on them and punish them in my wrath

[00:27:05] Then they will know that I am the Lord when I take vengeance on them the end wait, where was the yeah, we're getting there

[00:27:12] We're getting there. All right. Okay. Yeah, so let me read you about the Philistines a little bit and then we'll get there

[00:27:17] Okay, okay

[00:27:18] So the Philistines were they were ancient enemies of Israel from way back, right?

[00:27:24] Yeah, and they're said to have come originally from the islands of the Aegean sea

[00:27:29] Including tree. That's what I said. No, it's not

[00:27:32] No, it's a gene a gene. Okay. Sorry including Crete and are called the

[00:27:39] Kerathites or charathites and that's interpreted as the Crete Cretans

[00:27:43] Okay, okay

[00:27:44] Yep, and they are being punished because of their vicious treatment against Judah and they too will cease to be a nation

[00:27:50] Got it. Okay. Yeah now let's read verse 17 again. Sure. Okay. Yeah, I will carry out great

[00:27:57] Vengeance on them and punish them in my wrath

[00:28:00] Then they will know that I am the Lord when I take vengeance on them. Oh sounds similar so that's I guess that's it

[00:28:07] Yeah, that's it. Okay, so let me

[00:28:10] before

[00:28:11] Okay, go ahead. Let me read this little bit about that. Okay

[00:28:16] Okay, so in the

[00:28:19] 1994 film pulp fiction, yes, we discussed at the beginning of this episode right character Jules Winfield

[00:28:26] Ritually recites what is stated as Ezekiel 25 17

[00:28:32] Before he executes someone the passage is heard three times throughout the film

[00:28:37] The final two sentences of his speech are similar to the actual sighted passage

[00:28:43] Which is based on the King James version

[00:28:45] I wondered but the first two are fabricated from various biblical phrases

[00:28:52] Yeah, and should we play should we play that clip right here? We can I had also

[00:28:59] Copied the well, I want to clip it in so let's play it right here. Okay

[00:29:04] The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny

[00:29:12] evil man

[00:29:14] Blessed is he who in the name of charity and good will

[00:29:19] Shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children

[00:29:28] And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger

[00:29:34] those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers and you will know my name is

[00:29:42] when I lay my vengeance upon me

[00:29:49] One of the places that Quentin Tarantino got this

[00:29:54] Inspiration for this speech. Yeah was from a super old

[00:30:00] Martial arts film hmm and there's a dude he loves martial arts. He does kill Bill much right? Yeah

[00:30:07] So there's a guy and I didn't copy this in here

[00:30:12] But I forget there's a character in one of these films, okay, and his name is like Chibi something or other and he says

[00:30:20] Much like what Jules says in Pulp Fiction

[00:30:25] He says the path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities

[00:30:29] Oh, right, and I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempted to poison and destroy my brothers

[00:30:37] And you will know my name is Chibi. Whatever

[00:30:41] When I lay my vengeance upon thee Wow, yeah, okay

[00:30:45] So that's where that came from and then he mixed in some Bible quotes

[00:30:50] Yeah through in a and it's a Zikiel verse chapter 25 verse 17 sure

[00:30:58] It's kind of funny because like it's a

[00:31:01] It's almost like a joke, right? It's almost a it's almost a joke

[00:31:06] because like he's literally getting ready to kill people when he says this and

[00:31:11] so

[00:31:12] It's it's poking fun at the ridiculousness of

[00:31:16] God just by saying that phrase. I think that's what I love so much about that phrase

[00:31:21] Mm-hmm that he that he says in that movie. Yeah, it's like

[00:31:24] Yes, this is how ridiculous your God is he is being he's using this to he's using this wording in the Bible

[00:31:32] To then turn around and fucking murder people

[00:31:34] He's talking about vengeance. Yeah, which is one of the least

[00:31:41] Christian attributes and yes, I know we are not at the New Testament yet, right?

[00:31:45] but we are supposed to be learning about this God who is a loving God and

[00:31:52] He is a very jealous God which has said more than once he's a vengeful God. Yeah

[00:31:58] He's just horrible. He's a horrible being yeah, and that is not who I would choose as my

[00:32:07] Local deity no in the funny thing to me also is that in that movie Paul fiction

[00:32:13] Specifically the part where he's there in the room with the three guys and they get they're getting the suitcase, right?

[00:32:18] That he at one point some kid comes around a corner and like unloads a gun at him, right?

[00:32:22] And he misses like he's got six bullets in the chamber misses all six times nobody gets shot, right? Right and

[00:32:31] After murdering three people to recover a suitcase for his boss

[00:32:37] Jules decides that he has found God, right? Why because he didn't get killed, right after he just murdered three people

[00:32:46] Yeah

[00:32:47] That that was God telling him a message and to me that's hilarious hilarious. Yeah fucking hilarious

[00:32:54] Yeah, right. I'm like this is great. I mean, okay. It's great

[00:32:59] It's great. It's great commentary, right? It's great commentary. Yeah, it's a great statement, right?

[00:33:05] And and it basically is like yep. This is what it be right? Yeah

[00:33:11] What I also appreciate is that and I know this has been talked ad nauseam about this film

[00:33:16] Sure, is that it's all for this magical suitcase that none of us ever find this briefcase

[00:33:22] Has a McGuffin. Yeah is what it's called in the writing world, right?

[00:33:26] And we never have to know what's in it and that is both the most important and the most hilarious part

[00:33:34] Sure of that story. Yeah, because it at the same time that it's like making fun of religion

[00:33:40] It's also making fun of the hero's journey. Yeah, you know from a writing stance

[00:33:46] It's like it doesn't even fucking matter, right?

[00:33:49] Like okay

[00:33:50] I'm just gonna go off a little bit here just because I'm like working on outlining stuff and one of the screenplays

[00:33:56] That I'm studying is cause of Lanka

[00:33:58] Yeah, and the McGuffin in that film is these transit papers that like totally did not exist

[00:34:05] And when the writers were putting this movie together

[00:34:09] They were like this is never gonna fly with American audiences because this was like right

[00:34:14] like during the heat up to World War two that this movie came out sure and

[00:34:22] So they were you know trying to capture the feeling and at the time studios were putting out these films like one after

[00:34:28] The other just boom boom boom boom boom trash, right? Right? Whatever sticks to the wall

[00:34:33] So they just expected that Casablanca would not be that great a success particularly with the McGuffin of these

[00:34:41] magical

[00:34:42] transit papers signed by this uppity uppity whoever that

[00:34:46] Can't be questioned right and these actors just sell it like it's not of course

[00:34:52] This is true, right. And so that's like to me that when I learned that

[00:34:58] Background about Casablanca and the writers that is to me what that briefcase is sure and you know just kind of like I don't like

[00:35:08] Quentin Tarantino as a human being. I think he's just a despicable person

[00:35:11] Yeah, but you cannot deny some of his genius genius in filmmaking and

[00:35:17] Tearing apart a story. Yeah, and putting it back together. It's absolutely true

[00:35:22] It's one of those again so separating the artist from the art, right?

[00:35:27] Yeah, all right. Is that all we got for today? That's all we got for today

[00:35:31] I think that was more than enough for a shorter chapter as it was we went all over the fucking page

[00:35:36] Yeah, yeah, so all right when when wife says bye you will know that our name is sacrilegious discourse
