Get ready to facepalm and chuckle your way through another episode of irreverent biblical scrutiny with our latest dive into the mystifying antics of Ezekiel. In this installment, titled "Ezekiel Chapter 4," our audacious hosts embark on a comical yet critical exploration of the prophet's most peculiar public display yet.
Strap in as we unpack the holy hullabaloo that is Ezekiel's god-ordained performance piece, complete with arts and crafts, starvation chic, and the most unholy baking instructions you could imagine. Yes, you heard that right – Ezekiel gets his Great Biblical Bake Off moment, and let's just say the secret ingredient gives a whole new meaning to 'food for thought.'
Our hosts, with their trademark snark, will leave no stone (or should we say 'loaf'?) unturned as they dissect every mind-boggling detail of this divine directive. From lying on one side for over a year – which really makes you question the logistics of the bathroom breaks – to whipping up a fresh batch of barley bread over a fiery pile of cow dung, because apparently, human waste was just too far out even for Old Testament standards.
Was Ezekiel a visionary prophet, or just your run-of-the-mill ancient eccentric with a flair for the dramatic? Join us for a satirical session that balances the scales between mockery and marvel, ensuring you never read the scriptures the same way again. Tune in, if you dare, for an episode that's guaranteed to bake your noodle with its hot take on Ezekiel's culinary catastrophe and sidewalk slumber party.
Don't miss out on "Ezekiel Chapter 4," where we slice through the layers of this biblical bread pudding with the sharp knife of skepticism and serve it up with a side of hearty laughter. Subscribe, listen, and be prepared to witness the Bible as you've never seen it before – through the lens of two atheists who aren't afraid to use a little divine dung to fuel the fires of freethinking discourse.

[00:01:15] Welcome to sacrilegious discourse. I'm husband and I'm wife together
[00:01:19] We're reading the Bible for the very first time we grew up without religion and wanted to know what all the fuss was about
[00:01:25] Well, what have we learned so far that God is a dick and apparently some people believe in talking donkeys
[00:01:32] We're not trying to pass ourselves off as experts
[00:01:34] Nope
[00:01:34] We're just reading the Bible for the first time and given our first take reaction
[00:01:38] If you'd like to join us in this venture you might consider starting that episode one otherwise jump in wherever you like
[00:01:44] All right. Let's go read the Bible. Yeah, let's get to it
[00:01:48] Do you remember what happened yesterday and where the hell we are today? Well yesterday started with Ezekiel
[00:02:00] being fed a scroll by God and
[00:02:04] And and God said yeah
[00:02:09] Yes, he did yes, he did and then God decided that he was gonna turn Ezekiel's forehead into flint
[00:02:16] Mm-hmm, and then
[00:02:19] the Ezekiel spent some time
[00:02:21] flying around in a crazy
[00:02:23] four-headed angel
[00:02:25] Carriage or something to go to different places wheels that have eyes all the way down. Yeah. Yeah
[00:02:31] And then God helped lift Ezekiel up in the planes and he saw God in the planes
[00:02:37] And and then go here go there
[00:02:40] Yeah, and then sit down and then he bound and then God bound it
[00:02:44] Ezekiel up in his house like in change for seven days or something
[00:02:49] Tie them up like a move. Yeah. I mean just crazy shit is going on right like Ezekiel is is really just it's like
[00:02:57] It's nothing. I should take drugs to read this like this is this is like I mean this is like a trip
[00:03:04] This is this is something something's happening
[00:03:06] This is not like any of the books that we've read before not at all
[00:03:10] It's fun, but in a why is this in the bible kind of way? Yeah totally
[00:03:14] I I don't quite understand what is I mean I do kind of understand what's going on. Yeah, but holy shit. What is going on?
[00:03:25] So uh
[00:03:26] That being said that was Ezekiel chapter three sure as fuck was which means that today
[00:03:31] We're getting into Ezekiel chapter four. All right. Let's do this oki-doki

[00:05:20] All right, so we are jumping into easy kyle
[00:05:25] Chapter four z keel. It's easy kyle. Oh my god. Look yesterday when I said it several people
[00:05:32] Said that they enjoyed it. I I know and by several people. I mean one person said that they enjoyed it
[00:05:38] Right. Yeah, so that's all I needed
[00:05:41] easy kyle chapter four and
[00:05:43] Um just to kind of catch us up on where we were
[00:05:47] um god had been
[00:05:50] Telling him that he's gonna have some tough
[00:05:53] road to hoe road to hoe. Yeah ahead of him sure so
[00:05:58] Um, he's about to get going. Okay. All right. Yeah, I closed my window accidentally. Okay. Here. I am. Sorry nothing
[00:06:05] There you are here. I am okay. So god is talking ready. I'm ready now son of man
[00:06:11] You know you mere human mere human. Yes. Yeah know your place
[00:06:15] Take a block of clay and put it in front of you and draw the city of jerusalem on it
[00:06:22] Make a map, you know, okay. Okay. All right. He's setting him up
[00:06:25] He's about to tell him you're gonna do some shit with that map that i'm telling you to have him smash it
[00:06:30] No, oh he's gonna set up a game board. Oh, okay
[00:06:34] Then like monopoly, but drus is this like drusal monopoly?
[00:06:37] Yes, so draw the city on this clay thing and then lay siege to it
[00:06:42] Okay, okay erect siege works against it build a ramp up to it set up camps against it and put
[00:06:49] battering rams around it then take an iron pan place it as an iron wall
[00:06:55] Between you and the city and turn your face toward it. It will be under siege and you shall be seize it
[00:07:02] This will be a sign to the people of israel
[00:07:05] Okay, okay. So this this piece of clay that you're building let me let me uh
[00:07:10] Interrupt the broadcast here to give you a little bit of what are we we're doing arts and crafts time now with god
[00:07:16] Indeed we are okay. So following god's command is ekeel performs a sign act. Okay. This is um
[00:07:23] He's about to like remember when jeremiah had to wear the yoke
[00:07:27] And it was as a sign
[00:07:29] Right, so this is what he's having ekeel act out. Okay, he makes his profits do these
[00:07:36] physical shows these displays
[00:07:39] Of here's a thing that's gonna happen and this is you know kind of what it'll look like right, right? Yeah
[00:07:45] So it's a symbolic representation of the siege of jerusalem
[00:07:50] And we're gonna see the resulting famine that will come. Okay. All right
[00:07:54] So is ekeel
[00:07:56] Enacts the siege of jerusalem by first drawing a map on a clay
[00:08:01] Uh tablet or brick. Okay, and then building a model of the siege apparatus like god said and circling the model city
[00:08:08] And finally sets up an iron plate as a wall between the city and himself
[00:08:13] Facing the city to start the siege of it. Okay. Sure. So
[00:08:17] Um when he says block of clay
[00:08:20] It's also in other translations referred to as a tablet a tile or a brick. Okay. Okay. All right. So that's where we're at
[00:08:28] Got it. Yeah. All right, so
[00:08:31] To continue on god is still speaking. Okay, uh-huh and he says
[00:08:35] Um then lie on your left side and put the sin of the people of israel upon yourself
[00:08:42] Okay, and i'll explain what that means momentarily sure. Okay. You are to bear their sin
[00:08:48] For the number of days you lie on your side
[00:08:52] Again, i'll explain that in a minute. Okay. Sure. Sure. I have assigned you the same number of days as the years of their sin
[00:09:00] So for every day that you're lying there that represents one year that they were fuckers
[00:09:06] I'm gonna base this on how much god doesn't like the israelites and what they do
[00:09:10] That guy's gonna be laying there for quite a while. He does
[00:09:14] He is and he does that is correct
[00:09:17] I have assigned you the same number of days as the years of their sin
[00:09:21] So for three hundred and ninety days. Holy shit. That's over a year
[00:09:28] You will bear the sin of the people of israel now hang on before you think it's done because that's just israel
[00:09:35] Okay, okay after you have finished this
[00:09:39] Lie down again this time on your right side
[00:09:43] And bear the sin of the people of juda
[00:09:46] I have assigned you 40 days a day for each year. Oh my god, right?
[00:09:52] Turn your face toward the siege of jerusalem and with baird arm
[00:09:57] Prophecy against her
[00:09:59] I will tie you up with ropes so that you cannot turn from one side to the other
[00:10:04] Until you have finished the days of your siege. Is there gonna be somebody like feeding him like what's gonna happen?
[00:10:10] We'll get there in a minute like god gonna be like floating mana into his mouth or something
[00:10:15] These are great questions, which are kind of but not really answered
[00:10:19] Okay, all right. So you're asking great questions. I mean, I'm just like what is going like first
[00:10:24] He's doing arts and crafts with a clay block and now now he's gonna like bind him up for over a year
[00:10:31] Yes a year and a half. Yes, okay, so let's talk about those three hundred and ninety years and then those 40 years
[00:10:37] Yeah, right. So many different explanations have been given for these
[00:10:42] 390 years like where'd you pull that number from right? Yeah, it is thought to signify the
[00:10:48] 390 years of pre-sege punishment for israel in the land
[00:10:53] Okay, sure and that they pulled out from leviticus chapter 26
[00:10:57] And i'm assuming we're like israel we're talking about the other tribes that weren't really part of juda
[00:11:03] Like the whole bit in like kings and chronicles where that part was separate, right?
[00:11:08] Yes, that's exactly what i'm about to get to. Yeah, you are right on track buddy
[00:11:12] All right
[00:11:13] Okay, when you add the years of the reigns of the kings of juda from rahubulam to zedekaya
[00:11:20] As recorded in first and second kings you have a total of 394 years
[00:11:26] Now since during three of the years of his reign rahubulam walked with god
[00:11:31] According to second chronicles. Yeah, you end up with a number very close to azekiel's 390 years 391
[00:11:39] Okay, you know all right, so he's I guess he's caught him slack by one day. Got it. Got it. Yeah
[00:11:44] However, the greek text the septuagent. Yeah has 190 years
[00:11:50] Okay
[00:11:51] That's significantly different that is very different and i don't know
[00:11:55] What the math is like why maybe somebody later went back and like actually did the math on
[00:12:01] The kings and chronicles and stuff. Yeah, they're like no we need to change this up
[00:12:04] Yeah, that's what i'm thinking because it was originally written in hebru not greek. So
[00:12:09] Yeah, that that would be my thing. Okay. Um now the 40 days signifies the 40 years of post siege punishment for juda
[00:12:17] In exile and that comes from numbers chapter 14
[00:12:21] See, I think he should have got more time for that because god didn't like them prior to that
[00:12:25] That's why he was starting to punish them in the first place. So yeah, but whatever whatever
[00:12:29] I guess he didn't officially punish them
[00:12:31] And so the siege right but israel split it off earlier than juda. So regardless of what the numbers are
[00:12:37] Israel should get the larger number
[00:12:39] Whatever those numbers are no, I agree with that
[00:12:42] I mean based on based on the type of calculations we're making here with regard to
[00:12:47] Lion on your side for a year and a half or whatever the fuck we're doing
[00:12:51] Exactly. Okay, so we're gonna read further now
[00:12:54] But I just I felt like I had to explain what those years were because um in my notes
[00:13:00] I was like hang on hang on hang on right and I had to like go back and you know, see what that was about
[00:13:06] Sure, so okay. So continuing on god is talking to zikil again. Okay. All right take we and barley
[00:13:14] Beans and lentils mill it and spelt
[00:13:17] Put them in a storage jar and use them to make bread for yourself
[00:13:22] You are to eat it during the 390 days that you lie on your side
[00:13:26] Motherfucker's gonna eat nothing but bread
[00:13:29] Yes, okay way out 20 shekels of food to eat each day and eat it at set times
[00:13:37] Also measure out a six of a hint of water and drink it at set times. Okay. Look look look look
[00:13:45] So, okay, you're talking about a year and a half. Okay
[00:13:49] 400 and some days worth of lying on your side 430 days of lying on your side, right bound by god
[00:13:56] Apparently you cannot get up from there
[00:14:00] Where are you storing it like what are you doing with all this food? Where is it? Hang on? How is that happening?
[00:14:05] I don't understand how this is gonna work. We're gonna get there. Are we we are okay kind of does god like push it to
[00:14:12] Um or something no hang on. Okay. All right. All right
[00:14:16] So to continue eat the food as you would a loaf of barley bread
[00:14:20] Bake it in the sight of the people using human excrement for fuel
[00:14:25] Oh, the lord said in this way the people of israel will eat defiled food among the nations where I will drive them
[00:14:33] Okay, so let's let's go to the notes a minute. Sure. Sure. So ezekiel acts out the role
[00:14:39] Of jerusalem citizens eating meager rations of food to symbolize famine
[00:14:45] Even baking cakes over dung to emphasize the severity of what's to come. Okay. Yeah, so but let's talk about what the
[00:14:51] Fuck is millet and spelt. Well, millet is like a seed or like a
[00:14:56] Yeah, well, he named a whole bunch of things like beans and barley and all that shit
[00:15:00] And then he said millet and spelt those were considered inferior kinds of wheat. Oh, okay to make it
[00:15:07] Last longer and and to dole out the nutrients further. I see. Okay. Kind of like putting a
[00:15:14] salt
[00:15:16] Salt us in your food. You know, yeah, I've never done that
[00:15:19] But you know, that's a thing when people don't have a lot of choices to make the food go further
[00:15:25] Sure. Okay. So, okay. Let's talk about what the fuck is 20 shekels of food like what even is that right?
[00:15:32] Yeah, said measure that out. Sure
[00:15:34] 20 shekels is about eight ounces
[00:15:37] Which is the ration of bread
[00:15:39] per person per day
[00:15:41] Which is to show the great scarcity of bread. So it's supposed to be like a bite or two of bread
[00:15:47] representation of like the rations that the israelis are dealing with or whatever that they're going to have
[00:15:52] Oh, they're going to have yeah. Okay. All right. Got it. So he's like you're basically going to be acting this out in front of them
[00:15:59] Okay, yeah, and then so let's talk about what is a sixth part of a hint
[00:16:04] Sixth, you know, I hate that word. I cannot say it
[00:16:08] It's about two-thirds of a quart
[00:16:11] Which is the daily water ration
[00:16:14] That is going to symbolize the they're restricted access to water. Okay. Okay
[00:16:19] So he's going to have barely any water
[00:16:21] And only like a bite or two of bread every day for a year and a half. Okay. Yeah
[00:16:27] And what um
[00:16:29] The what's going to happen to his, you know crap like what's when he takes a shit?
[00:16:34] What's gonna happen in a minute? We are well, okay?
[00:16:36] So remember he said and bake it over human excrement. Oh, so he's going to use his shit to cook make the fire
[00:16:42] Yeah, but we're going to talk more about that in a minute for now. Let's just talk about the food itself. Okay. All right
[00:16:47] so
[00:16:48] um
[00:16:49] scholars and
[00:16:50] Apologists say that obviously
[00:16:53] He had to be able to move because he's been ordered to prepare this food and measure out these items for himself
[00:17:00] So it's very likely that he only
[00:17:03] slept there at night
[00:17:06] On his side, but it said he was bound like it said he was bound during those time periods. Yes
[00:17:11] Okay, so he either did that at night like he slept outdoors
[00:17:15] or
[00:17:16] He had set hours during the day
[00:17:18] That he had to perform this and then he would you know go back into his house because he was doing this
[00:17:23] Outside in front of everybody. Oh, right. Okay because the whole point is that they see him
[00:17:28] Right because he's symbolizing to the people that this is what you guys are going to go through
[00:17:33] Yeah, and so he has to be doing it in front of them
[00:17:35] So he's probably either outside his house or like in the town square or whatever. Got it. Okay
[00:17:42] So he's either doing it at night, which I don't think is right because I don't think as many people would have seen him
[00:17:47] more likely he did it during the day for set hours and then he would go back home
[00:17:52] And you know prepare right his measurements, right? Okay. Okay, so
[00:17:57] remember he was told to
[00:17:59] Um use human excrement that would have been his poop
[00:18:02] Yeah to as feel for the fire to bake the bread, right? Okay. Yeah, so okay
[00:18:07] So then we're going back to reading now and azekiel's talking now. Okay, then I
[00:18:12] Azekiel said
[00:18:14] Not so sovereign lord. Uh, I have never defiled myself from my youth until now
[00:18:21] I have never eaten anything found dead or torn by wild animals. No impure meat has ever entered my mouth
[00:18:30] So he's like the fuck i'm not doing that right. No, it sounds crazy
[00:18:35] You're ordering me to break your rules that have been like for centuries things that we have followed
[00:18:41] I don't think that's right. Do you want to rephrase god?
[00:18:44] But if you are truly a prophet and god is truly talking to you
[00:18:49] Do you really like this is one of those things where I questioned in the past because
[00:18:53] Earlier on in the bible if you questioned god, you were fucked as fuck. Yeah
[00:18:58] Yeah, like that's not a thing you wanted to do
[00:19:01] So I have to I have to wonder about these prophets that are like questioning god yesterday
[00:19:07] Three times in a row you fell on your fucking face
[00:19:10] You were so shocked at the side of them and today you're like whoa, whoa, whoa
[00:19:14] You let this fucker put a scroll down your goddamn throat, right? I mean small or something something. Yeah, he told you today something
[00:19:22] Yeah, so
[00:19:23] Um, I'm just telling you what it says. Okay. So I agree with you. Yeah, so then god says very well
[00:19:32] I will let you bake your bread over cow dung
[00:19:35] Instead of human excrement. Okay, so he didn't you know entirely say no poop. He was just like fine fine fine
[00:19:42] I won't make you use human poop, which would be
[00:19:46] Part of the defilement. Oh, okay. Okay. Yeah, he then said to me son of man
[00:19:52] You know, yeah mere fucking human right? Yeah, I am about to cut off the food supply in Jerusalem
[00:19:58] The people will eat rationed food in anxiety and drink rationed water in despair
[00:20:04] For food and water will be scarce
[00:20:07] They will be appalled at the side of each other and will waste away because of their sin
[00:20:12] The end I mean we saw that in I mean so I mean this is technically happening
[00:20:17] Like this is supposed to be a prophecy prior to the Babylonian exile exactly
[00:20:22] Well, he is in the early wave of the Babylonian exile before the final way
[00:20:29] Right, right, but this is prior to the starvation and all that stuff they described
[00:20:33] Yeah, um, I think it was at the end of Jeremiah where we heard some of that correct. So but you know
[00:20:40] So I have to believe that this was actually written
[00:20:43] After after right and not a prophecy. It's a backdated fill in right. Yeah, but um
[00:20:50] It's just it it's really
[00:20:53] This is really weird. Yeah, like this whole this whole book so far has been really really fucking weird
[00:21:00] It's been fun though. It has been fun
[00:21:02] But like I'm questioning the sanity of this person, you know
[00:21:05] Like the zikyles does not seem like a sane human being is not lending legitimacy to this at all
[00:21:11] No, I mean
[00:21:12] I feel like this this he must have been like the
[00:21:16] The the drug outcast like he was he was like, oh there goes a ziky. Oh, he's
[00:21:21] Man, you he's weird. Yeah, he's he's on something man. I don't know what it is
[00:21:26] Like no wonder when Jeremiah finally came around later. They were like, no, fuck this
[00:21:30] We've had enough of you fucking prophets
[00:21:33] Y'all are full of shit like literally right. Yeah, but no, but Jeremiah would have been separate though
[00:21:38] Jeremiah was over in Jerusalem. This guy was over in Babylon, right? That's true. So I mean, they wouldn't have been
[00:21:44] necessarily
[00:21:46] that if
[00:21:47] Jeremiah was a
[00:21:49] secret double agent for Babylon
[00:21:52] He might have come up and talked with zikyles. Sure. I'm not saying their paths might have crossed
[00:21:57] I'm sure that their paths probably did cross
[00:22:00] But I I think this guy
[00:22:03] Is just like I mean, this is some really really nutty stuff happening
[00:22:07] No, I agree and the whole the being bound for a year and a half thing
[00:22:12] Like if this was truly something that would that that had happened
[00:22:16] Like that's just I I can't even imagine
[00:22:19] Being a person witnessing this thing happen like what is wrong with this guy?
[00:22:23] Well remember was it Isaiah that had to walk around naked? But then they were like, but it wasn't really naked
[00:22:29] He was just in his sackcloth undies. Right, but that was out in the desert and he was alone
[00:22:34] You know like that at least that's the impression I got from that one. I thought he had to walk around naked in town
[00:22:39] No, it was in the desert. Was it? Yeah. Oh, yeah, it was in the desert. I don't remember so
[00:22:43] Um, well, let me tell you about fire a little bit. Okay. Sure before we
[00:22:48] Close out. Yeah, okay
[00:22:50] So burley cakes were often baked on stones and that's coming straight from first kings chapter 19
[00:22:57] Heated with fire using a fuel of animal dung. So that's not unusual. Okay often mixed with straw
[00:23:04] Animal dung dried animal dung was used as fuel in the east and still is in some places today
[00:23:11] And it was not regarded as ritually unclean
[00:23:15] So that's why when god relented he was like, okay
[00:23:19] He's not gonna. He's not gonna make him break his laws because he's like i'm i'm godly
[00:23:24] I don't want to break your laws. Yeah, I don't want to be ungodly to prove godness
[00:23:29] I guess I can appreciate that given that this is supposedly a
[00:23:33] Godly quote-unquote godly man, right? And well, and if he's um trying to
[00:23:38] Show the people you guys need to get right with god
[00:23:41] Breaking god's rule to display god's rule
[00:23:45] Doesn't exactly lend him any credibility. Like why would they listen to him? They they could easily point to that and be like, um
[00:23:53] You're not clean. Why the fuck will we listen to you?
[00:23:56] But I am going to say this real quick because
[00:23:58] You know, there's a lot of talk about how god has like he's unquestionably right about everything, right?
[00:24:03] He is the ultimate authority. You shall not question god's judgment, right? Yeah, and yet
[00:24:11] yet
[00:24:12] He not only questioned god's judgment
[00:24:15] But god changed his mind god relented. I'm like what yeah
[00:24:20] If you know best
[00:24:22] Why would you even consider?
[00:24:24] Contemplate changing your mind right and here's here's a good reason why god could have put his foot down and said
[00:24:30] No, we are gonna do it this way and here's why
[00:24:33] Okay, yeah human waste was considered ritually unclean
[00:24:36] Which we've already talked about and had to be buried outside the camp of the israelites to prevent defilement
[00:24:42] And that's straight from deuteronomy chapter 23. Sure. However during the siege to come
[00:24:48] Yeah, all cattle would be killed for food
[00:24:51] So only human excrement would be available at that point for fuel
[00:24:56] Got it. So, you know, I honestly
[00:24:59] I know it's gross and dumb and weird
[00:25:01] But to make his point that no you're acting this out. This is what's gonna be happening
[00:25:07] I honestly feel like god should have put his foot down and said no because this is the way it's gonna be being unclean and being
[00:25:14] Starvacious and cooking
[00:25:16] Food over human shit
[00:25:19] It's what's gonna be right right like if you're trying to make the point make the fucking point, right?
[00:25:25] So I I feel like that
[00:25:28] Kind of didn't do um, either of them any favors right right and and moreover
[00:25:33] I I feel like the things earlier on in the bible like with moses and things like that
[00:25:38] There were some times when moses questioned god
[00:25:40] I felt like he had a better leg to stand on than this. Yes, you know, but god didn't back down then right
[00:25:46] So I put on this god's like man. Okay, you're right
[00:25:50] Right, and it's like really the times that he picks to back down on the times
[00:25:53] He doesn't yeah, they don't really make any sense to smite or not to smite right who could fucking know
[00:26:00] Yeah, yeah, I don't get it
[00:26:02] Um, you got anything else to add for today or no that is it for this chapter
[00:26:07] All right. Well that was a zekiel chapter four sure as fuck was which means that we'll be back tomorrow with
