Hosea: The Doomsday Prepper Prophet
Hey there, fellow skeptics and Bible enthusiasts! In this episode of Sacrilegious Discourse, Husband and Wife are diving into a brand new book of the Bible—Hosea. Buckle up for a wild ride as we explore the life and times of Hosea, one of the twelve minor prophets, and his controversial message of doom and repentance.
First up, we dive into the historical context of Hosea. Set around the fall of the northern kingdom of Israel, Hosea's prophecies are a mix of doom and gloom, denouncing the worship of gods other than Yahweh. We discuss how Hosea uses the metaphor of an unfaithful wife to illustrate Israel's abandonment of Yahweh, and why this story is particularly unsettling.
Next, we explore the origins of Hosea himself. Listed as one of the twelve minor prophets in the Nevi'iyim, Hosea's writings predate the final versions of the Torah. Despite the grim nature of his prophecies, his message influenced later prophets like Jeremiah.
We also take a closer look at the names of Hosea's children, each carrying a prophetic message of doom for Israel. From Jezreel, symbolizing unrepented guilt, to Lo-Ruhama (not loved) and Lo-Ammi (not my people), these names serve as grim reminders of God's wrath.
As always, we bring our irreverent humor and critical eye to these ancient stories, questioning their legitimacy and purpose. Whether you're here for the theological critique or just some laughs, this episode has got you covered.

[00:00:00] Welcome to Sacrilegious Discourse.
[00:00:02] For this is what the Sovereign Lord says!
[00:00:04] Why do you need prophets to tell people who you are and what you want?
[00:00:07] If you can justify everything that the God of the Bible has done,
[00:00:12] then you can justify any of your behavior.
[00:00:14] A lot of this mentality is trickling into
[00:00:17] what is now mainstream right wing Christianity.
[00:00:21] I am capable of empathy greater than this God of the Bible.
[00:00:26] This is a Bible that they tell kids this is the good Lord,
[00:00:31] this is the good book.
[00:00:32] He is fantasizing about murder, mass murder.
[00:00:37] Head over to sacrilegiousdiscourse.com right now to find out how to leave us a review

[00:01:18] Husband!
[00:01:18] Wife!
[00:01:19] Do you know what we're doing today?
[00:01:21] We are starting a new book of the Bible.
[00:01:24] We are.
[00:01:24] Which is...
[00:01:26] Hosehead!
[00:01:27] What is it?
[00:01:28] Try again.
[00:01:29] Hosea.
[00:01:30] Hosea.
[00:01:30] You were getting it wrong all last week.
[00:01:32] I was calling it Josiah.
[00:01:33] You were calling it anything but Hosea.
[00:01:35] Yeah.
[00:01:36] So we're starting a new book.
[00:01:38] That's amazing.
[00:01:39] Alright, you ready to do this?
[00:01:41] Sure, I fucking am.
[00:01:42] Let's do it.
[00:01:42] Okey dokey.
[00:01:50] Alright, let's get into this book of Hosehead.
[00:01:54] Hosea.
[00:01:55] Hosea.
[00:01:56] Chapter one.
[00:01:57] Yes.
[00:01:57] Alright, but first I thought we could take a look at who the fuck is this guy?
[00:02:02] Okay.
[00:02:03] Is he like Daniel?
[00:02:04] Just some legend?
[00:02:06] Sure, who the fuck is Hosea?
[00:02:07] Is he a real dude?
[00:02:08] I don't know.
[00:02:09] Is he?
[00:02:09] What's the book?
[00:02:10] When was it written?
[00:02:11] Some time.
[00:02:12] Who wrote it?
[00:02:12] It was a while ago, I know.
[00:02:14] See?
[00:02:14] Yeah.
[00:02:15] I don't know anything about this.
[00:02:16] Yeah.
[00:02:16] So Hosea is listed as one of the 12 minor prophets of the Neve'iam, which is the prophet section
[00:02:26] of the Tanakh.
[00:02:27] Got it.
[00:02:27] You know how they split up their books into the Korah and the Kutuvim is the other part.
[00:02:39] The sections, the things, the breakdowns, the places.
[00:02:42] Yeah, I got it.
[00:02:42] So, oh the writings, that's the one.
[00:02:44] I was thinking of like Proverbs and shit.
[00:02:46] Right.
[00:02:47] Yeah.
[00:02:47] And then this one is the prophets.
[00:02:51] Yes.
[00:02:51] Okay.
[00:02:51] Yeah.
[00:02:52] So, but it also is its own book in the, you know, Christian Old Testament.
[00:02:57] Right.
[00:02:57] Which is obviously because we're reading it.
[00:02:58] Yeah.
[00:02:59] So, yeah.
[00:03:00] According to the traditional order of most Hebrew Bibles, it is the first of the
[00:03:07] 12 minor prophets.
[00:03:08] I see.
[00:03:08] Okay.
[00:03:09] We've gotten into the, what I like to call the doomsday preppers, the minor prophets.
[00:03:14] Okay.
[00:03:14] Because they're talking about, you know, future to come and it's bad.
[00:03:17] Got it.
[00:03:18] You know?
[00:03:19] So that's what I called them on my list.
[00:03:21] Doomsday preppers.
[00:03:22] Got it.
[00:03:23] The book is set, oh yeah, and we're going back in time here.
[00:03:26] Oh, okay.
[00:03:27] Because that's fun.
[00:03:28] Yeah, that's good stuff.
[00:03:29] Right.
[00:03:30] The book is set around the fall of the northern kingdom of Israel in the last
[00:03:35] year of the reign of Jeroboam.
[00:03:37] Wow.
[00:03:38] King of Israel.
[00:03:39] Yeah.
[00:03:40] And as such, it denounces the worship of God other than Yahweh.
[00:03:44] I mean that's pretty much consistent.
[00:03:46] Yeah.
[00:03:46] Look for the way through the Bible.
[00:03:47] Exactly.
[00:03:48] Well this one is a gross story that I hate.
[00:03:50] I read like just a quick what's it.
[00:03:53] Okay.
[00:03:53] And I'm like oh, I'm going to hate this.
[00:03:55] Got it.
[00:03:56] Exciting.
[00:03:56] Yeah.
[00:03:57] It uses the story of an unfaithful wife as a metaphor for the people of
[00:04:03] Israel's abandonment of Yahweh.
[00:04:05] So we get to hear all about this fucking whore that she had on her
[00:04:08] goddamn husband.
[00:04:09] They really like using women to...
[00:04:11] Illustrate everything bad?
[00:04:12] Yeah, basically.
[00:04:15] The book dates back to around 760 to 720 BCE.
[00:04:20] Oh, so like I said.
[00:04:21] This is quite old.
[00:04:22] Okay.
[00:04:22] And it's one of the oldest books of the Tanakh.
[00:04:25] Got it.
[00:04:26] Okay.
[00:04:27] It even predates the final recensions of the full Torah, the
[00:04:32] Pentateuch.
[00:04:32] Okay.
[00:04:33] So you know how they changed around stuff, added, took out,
[00:04:37] rescinded.
[00:04:38] Sure.
[00:04:39] Like they sat around the table figuring out what the final copy
[00:04:42] would be.
[00:04:42] Right.
[00:04:43] Yeah.
[00:04:43] This predates that final version.
[00:04:46] Okay.
[00:04:46] Okay.
[00:04:46] All right.
[00:04:47] The book has a long history of formation and transmission
[00:04:52] meaning gathering up the stories, figuring out what the
[00:04:56] story is, and passing it from one person to the next.
[00:05:00] Sure.
[00:05:01] Yeah.
[00:05:01] Much of the material in oral form goes back to Hosea himself.
[00:05:06] So it is a dude.
[00:05:07] Okay.
[00:05:07] Okay.
[00:05:08] Hosea is a guy.
[00:05:09] All right.
[00:05:09] Not like Daniel.
[00:05:10] Got it.
[00:05:11] Okay.
[00:05:12] And the collection of sayings and individual counts was
[00:05:16] probably done in Judah though at a much later date than
[00:05:20] him.
[00:05:20] Got it.
[00:05:21] So whatever.
[00:05:22] All right.
[00:05:23] And he is among the first writing prophets, which...
[00:05:26] So he hypothetically wrote this?
[00:05:28] Or what do you mean by writing prophets?
[00:05:30] Yeah.
[00:05:31] Okay.
[00:05:32] But it depends who you ask.
[00:05:33] Got it.
[00:05:33] It's like everything.
[00:05:34] So, you know, how it be.
[00:05:36] Right.
[00:05:37] Okay.
[00:05:39] He prophesied during a really deeply dark dramatic era of
[00:05:44] Israel's history.
[00:05:45] Okay.
[00:05:45] Because the northern kingdoms decline and fall that
[00:05:49] happened in the 8th century BCE.
[00:05:52] So...
[00:05:52] Okay.
[00:05:52] Like the 700 BCEs.
[00:05:54] Right.
[00:05:54] You know, they were in a shambles like this guy is
[00:05:57] falling, this guy is falling.
[00:05:58] Sure.
[00:05:59] Everybody's trying to get us all the time.
[00:06:01] Right, right.
[00:06:02] And so Hosea was like, this sucks.
[00:06:04] I gotta share my people up.
[00:06:06] The people's abandonment of faith was rampant, like you
[00:06:09] said, but not just then throughout fucking history.
[00:06:12] Sure.
[00:06:12] Having turned away from God in order to serve both
[00:06:16] the calves of Jeroboam and the Canaanite gods Ba'al
[00:06:21] and Asherah.
[00:06:22] Right.
[00:06:23] So they were like, all of this sounds great.
[00:06:26] But then we also talked about how the calves of
[00:06:29] Jeroboam were not necessarily inconsistent or
[00:06:34] incorrect because remember he was just kind of...
[00:06:37] It was a different version of Yahweh basically.
[00:06:39] It was a different sect.
[00:06:40] Yeah.
[00:06:40] So yeah, I just found that...
[00:06:42] Which is, I feel like that was partly what was
[00:06:45] going on with Aaron at the bottom of the mountain
[00:06:47] when Moses went up to the top of the mountain.
[00:06:49] Exactly.
[00:06:49] Because he made a calf then as well.
[00:06:52] Yes, he did.
[00:06:52] So it feels like some of those things were like
[00:06:54] sprinkled throughout and foreshadowing what maybe
[00:06:57] came later as far as these different groups of
[00:07:02] people that worshiped Yahweh.
[00:07:04] Yup, there you go.
[00:07:06] Other sins followed the book claims.
[00:07:10] So it wasn't just that they turned away from
[00:07:11] God and worshiped other gods.
[00:07:13] Right.
[00:07:14] They did a bunch of other shit like homicide,
[00:07:17] perjury, theft and sexual deviation.
[00:07:19] I'm sure they did.
[00:07:21] That they was always fucking in the high places
[00:07:23] and under the tall trees.
[00:07:24] Yeah, right.
[00:07:25] Hosea declares that unless they were pent of these sins
[00:07:28] God will allow their nation to be destroyed
[00:07:31] and the people will be taken into captivity by Assyria,
[00:07:35] the greatest nation of that time.
[00:07:38] Okay.
[00:07:38] So they were always scared of some nation that was big.
[00:07:41] They were.
[00:07:42] But who knows which one it was in any given sense.
[00:07:45] Right, yeah.
[00:07:46] It doesn't...
[00:07:47] This goes back to when we're like,
[00:07:49] God's always killing his own people.
[00:07:51] Always.
[00:07:51] Like there's always something going on.
[00:07:53] Never not be scared if you're the people
[00:07:55] and never not be mad if you're God.
[00:07:58] Right.
[00:07:59] I just feel like, you know,
[00:08:00] if you're gonna believe in this God, right?
[00:08:02] He's a bad fucking manager.
[00:08:04] His people will not get on board with his message.
[00:08:08] No.
[00:08:08] Right?
[00:08:08] So I just feel like he's a piss poor leader.
[00:08:11] Yeah.
[00:08:11] That's what I think.
[00:08:12] I think so too.
[00:08:13] Because the leader is supposed to take responsibility
[00:08:15] for all those who are under him.
[00:08:17] Yeah, I mean he really could have like benefited
[00:08:19] from like the help of Stephen Covey or something, you know?
[00:08:22] Seven.
[00:08:23] What is it?
[00:08:24] Seven habits of highly effective people.
[00:08:26] Effective people.
[00:08:27] Right, yeah.
[00:08:28] I wonder what color his parachute was.
[00:08:30] Oh no.
[00:08:30] Or who moved his cheese.
[00:08:31] Right.
[00:08:32] The prophecy of Hosea centers on God's unending love
[00:08:36] toward a very simple Israel.
[00:08:39] And God's agony over his people's betrayal.
[00:08:43] But only because it looks bad to his neighbors.
[00:08:45] Yeah.
[00:08:46] At least that's what we've discovered.
[00:08:47] Like how could you stop worshiping me and being scared?
[00:08:51] Love me bitches.
[00:08:52] Yeah, yeah.
[00:08:53] We love all the gods.
[00:08:54] Whichever one makes it rain.
[00:08:55] That's the one we love best though.
[00:08:57] Yeah.
[00:08:57] Hosea prophesied over the course of around 66 years.
[00:09:01] From 790 to about 724 BCE.
[00:09:05] Okay.
[00:09:06] And thus he served eight years under the reign of Jeroboam.
[00:09:10] 33 years under the reign of Uzziah.
[00:09:13] The whole reigns of Jotham and Ahaz.
[00:09:16] Remember they were very brief.
[00:09:18] And then three years in the reign of Hezekiah.
[00:09:21] Got it.
[00:09:21] He would not have survived the taking of Samaria, of course.
[00:09:26] Okay.
[00:09:26] Which happened a bit later.
[00:09:27] Okay.
[00:09:29] Hosea's message influenced latter prophets such as Jeremiah.
[00:09:33] Hmm.
[00:09:33] So you know he was one of the major prophets but now we're in the minor prophets.
[00:09:37] Yeah, probably right.
[00:09:38] So with that now we know a little bit more about him.
[00:09:41] Still not enough really.
[00:09:43] Yeah.
[00:09:43] But you know we'll do a.
[00:09:44] I mean how much can you really know about somebody that's like you know almost 3,000 years old.
[00:09:48] Right.
[00:09:49] Like I just wanted to know a little bit more about you know what he was about when he was
[00:09:55] who wrote his book and stuff but I will do a deeper dive of course when we do our book wrap up.
[00:10:00] I mean I think it's enough to say that he was big mad at the way that Israelites were worshiping other gods.
[00:10:05] That's pretty much the.
[00:10:05] He was big mad.
[00:10:06] Yeah.
[00:10:08] Alright so let's read chapter one.
[00:10:09] Ready?
[00:10:10] Yeah.
[00:10:10] Okay.
[00:10:10] The word of the Lord that came to Hosea son of Beery during the reigns of Uzziah Jotham Ahaz
[00:10:18] and Hezekiah kings of Judah.
[00:10:20] And during the reign of Jeroboam son of Jeho Hash king of Israel.
[00:10:26] Okay.
[00:10:27] Okay.
[00:10:27] That was verse one which is basically like just an intro to this.
[00:10:33] Sure.
[00:10:33] Okay.
[00:10:34] When the Lord began to speak through Hosea the Lord said to him go.
[00:10:38] Marry a promiscuous woman and have children with her for like an adulterous wife this land
[00:10:45] is guilty of unfaithfulness to the Lord.
[00:10:48] Why the fuck is he telling his prophet to go do that?
[00:10:51] I don't know.
[00:10:51] Like is that he's trying to have his prophet be an example of what is going wrong in Israel?
[00:10:56] Yeah.
[00:10:57] That's weird.
[00:10:58] Yeah.
[00:10:58] Okay.
[00:10:59] So he married Gomer you know that whore.
[00:11:01] Yeah I guess.
[00:11:02] Daughter of Deblayam and Deblayam.
[00:11:05] Deblayam.
[00:11:05] And she conceived and bore him a son.
[00:11:09] Then the Lord said to Hosea call him Jezreel because I will soon punish the house of Jehu
[00:11:15] for the massacre at Jezreel and I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel.
[00:11:21] Okay.
[00:11:21] In that day continue God I will break Israel's bow in the valley of Jezreel.
[00:11:27] Got it.
[00:11:28] Yeah great.
[00:11:29] Yeah that sounds that exactly what I'm going to name my kid after.
[00:11:33] Didn't they just say that he was showing something about endless love and now he's going to kill
[00:11:36] them all right?
[00:11:37] This is part of his love.
[00:11:39] Oh killing people means love.
[00:11:41] I always wondered how that worked.
[00:11:44] It's like if you research a narcissist online like in the whole medical sense of the word
[00:11:51] yeah it's they love bomb and then they punch you in the face and then they apologize
[00:11:56] and then they say but you had it coming and then they're like well it's fine everybody
[00:12:01] punches and then they're like that never happened what are you fucking talking about you weirdo?
[00:12:05] Sure.
[00:12:06] Why are you exaggerating and then they love bomb some more if they feel like it.
[00:12:08] Got it.
[00:12:09] So he's in his punch you in the eye face.
[00:12:14] Got it.
[00:12:14] Okay yeah.
[00:12:15] Gomer conceived again and gave birth to a daughter.
[00:12:19] If this woman is as much of a whore as they say she is how does he know that it's
[00:12:25] his right?
[00:12:26] Exactly.
[00:12:27] Then the Lord because the Lord just knows these things.
[00:12:29] Oh okay okay.
[00:12:29] He had a pregnancy test.
[00:12:31] Got it.
[00:12:32] And DNA kit.
[00:12:34] Okay.
[00:12:34] Then the Lord said to Hosea call her low Ruhama which means not loved.
[00:12:41] Wow.
[00:12:41] Right?
[00:12:42] That's horrible.
[00:12:43] I know exactly for I will no longer show love to Israel that I should at all forgive
[00:12:49] them yet I will show love to Judah and I will save them not by bow sword or battle
[00:12:57] or by horses and horsemen but I the Lord their God will save them.
[00:13:03] Until he doesn't when they all later not too much later.
[00:13:07] That's why I kind of did that with my voice at the end there to kind of suggest that there's
[00:13:13] a dot dot dot.
[00:13:14] Right.
[00:13:15] Question mark?
[00:13:15] Yeah no it's funny like he just it's whatever he punishes everybody all the time always
[00:13:22] until he doesn't and then he doesn't I guess.
[00:13:24] It's like if you had a kid and you named it fuck you.
[00:13:28] Right.
[00:13:29] Why?
[00:13:30] Stop that's mean don't do that.
[00:13:32] Yeah.
[00:13:33] After she had weaned low Ruhama Gomorrah another son so three babies.
[00:13:39] Okay.
[00:13:39] Then the Lord said call him low on me which means not my people.
[00:13:44] Wow.
[00:13:45] Right.
[00:13:45] Maybe this is the one she had with somebody else.
[00:13:47] But you are not my people and I am not your God.
[00:13:51] Okay.
[00:13:51] Don't you?
[00:13:52] I love you but I'm not your God and you're not my people.
[00:13:56] So but I could go under the a share poll now right?
[00:13:58] Right yeah so fuck off God.
[00:14:00] That's what I was trying to tell you all these years God.
[00:14:02] Yeah.
[00:14:03] Jays yet the Israelites will be like the sand on the seashore which cannot be measured or
[00:14:08] counted in the place where it was said to them you are not my people they will
[00:14:13] be called children of the living God.
[00:14:15] The people of Judah and the people of Israel will come together they will appoint one
[00:14:21] leader and will come up out of the land for great will be the day of Jezreel the end.
[00:14:27] Well that still hasn't happened technically because they got conquered by Babylon and Judah
[00:14:33] was still a thing and then the 12 tribes of Israel they are still trying to recover
[00:14:39] them to this day to this day.
[00:14:42] To this day.
[00:14:42] You know I'm just saying like it's not they don't know where the fuck these tribes
[00:14:46] are they don't know what happened to them like it speaks of it as though it's
[00:14:49] going to be this great coming together right?
[00:14:51] Right.
[00:14:52] And there has been no account of a great coming together of the Israelite tribes
[00:14:56] after they were tribes way back in thousands of years ago.
[00:15:00] My dad said they're all there.
[00:15:01] That's bullshit.
[00:15:02] My dad said they're all there.
[00:15:03] Well your dad's full of shit.
[00:15:05] I mean.
[00:15:05] With regard to that.
[00:15:06] Yeah.
[00:15:07] I don't know how you can say that with any authority.
[00:15:10] He read the Bible.
[00:15:12] Okay.
[00:15:13] So that was the end of that chapter but I took some notes and I wanted to tell
[00:15:17] you a few things as I went through chapter one.
[00:15:21] Sure.
[00:15:21] Okay.
[00:15:21] Yeah.
[00:15:22] So my first note I use the swipe thingy to make words on my phone like I don't type
[00:15:29] them in.
[00:15:30] Swipe type.
[00:15:31] I swipe type.
[00:15:31] Yeah.
[00:15:32] Yeah.
[00:15:33] Only sometimes almost always it doesn't guess the word correctly.
[00:15:38] Yeah.
[00:15:38] So I kept trying to type in or swipe in Gomer.
[00:15:41] Yeah.
[00:15:42] The first one that came up was Grindr.
[00:15:44] And then King Ginger.
[00:15:46] And I was like okay I gotta save these.
[00:15:49] So I did.
[00:15:50] She was probably not a prostitute when Hosea was told to marry her.
[00:15:55] Okay.
[00:15:56] I don't know how that works when that verse specifically said go marry that promiscuous
[00:16:02] person.
[00:16:02] Yeah.
[00:16:03] Does that mean that she was fucking but not getting money for it?
[00:16:07] That could be maybe.
[00:16:09] Maybe.
[00:16:09] You know that.
[00:16:10] Or maybe they've tried to in years since that was written try to tame that down
[00:16:15] some.
[00:16:16] Right.
[00:16:16] You know.
[00:16:17] Maybe we should be a little more lenient on women and not hit them quite as much.
[00:16:22] I mean I think you could see that either way.
[00:16:24] Okay.
[00:16:25] Because the Bible is notoriously bad with regard to how it views and talks about women.
[00:16:33] Yeah.
[00:16:34] So I feel like even maybe hundreds of years ago they might have seen stuff like this
[00:16:39] and be like we need to like not say that this is that.
[00:16:42] Right.
[00:16:43] Because that sounds pretty fucking bad.
[00:16:44] It's mean.
[00:16:45] Even in the grand scheme of things of how much bad there is about women in the Bible.
[00:16:49] This one's you know pretty bad.
[00:16:51] Yeah.
[00:16:52] And it's very direct like I'm going to represent the shittiness of Israel with a woman.
[00:16:59] That is what I'm going to do.
[00:17:00] Yeah.
[00:17:01] This woman represents how shitty Israel is.
[00:17:03] Exactly.
[00:17:04] Wow.
[00:17:05] Okay.
[00:17:05] Yeah.
[00:17:06] That's fucked up.
[00:17:08] So some of the notes that I took from various sources said that in recording the story this
[00:17:14] is Hosea looking back over the events that happened and he's recalling that the woman whom
[00:17:21] he married and who bore him children became a prostitute.
[00:17:25] Whoa.
[00:17:26] Became one, huh?
[00:17:27] I guess.
[00:17:28] Wow.
[00:17:29] Yeah.
[00:17:29] I don't know.
[00:17:29] That's interesting.
[00:17:30] I haven't.
[00:17:31] I want to hear that story.
[00:17:32] Right.
[00:17:32] Yeah.
[00:17:33] I have not gone.
[00:17:35] Apparently Hosea was not you know not doing his bit.
[00:17:38] I don't know.
[00:17:39] Dang.
[00:17:39] Didn't didn't didn't hold up his end of the bargain maybe.
[00:17:41] Oh my gosh.
[00:17:42] I mean, I don't know.
[00:17:44] Geez.
[00:17:44] He's in love with God you know.
[00:17:46] Okay there are many different reasons that people cheat and it's not all related to sex.
[00:17:51] No but I want to hear the story.
[00:17:52] I do too but I don't know what story we're getting so we'll just have to you know hang in there.
[00:17:57] I'm just saying that sounds like a juicy story.
[00:17:59] I want to hear that story.
[00:18:00] No I agree.
[00:18:01] I do.
[00:18:01] So let's talk about the kids for just a second.
[00:18:04] All right.
[00:18:05] Okay so you know how each of them was named something horrible bad and wrong?
[00:18:08] Yeah.
[00:18:08] Yeah.
[00:18:08] So the first one was intended to put Israel in mind of their unrepented guilt.
[00:18:15] Okay.
[00:18:15] And the acts of cruelty committed in their palace of Jezreel.
[00:18:19] It just occurred to me maybe she got rid of him because of what he made her name their
[00:18:25] kids.
[00:18:25] That could be.
[00:18:26] Just saying.
[00:18:26] That could be and the only way to support herself was prostitution.
[00:18:29] Sure.
[00:18:29] Yeah.
[00:18:29] So she wasn't promiscuous.
[00:18:31] She was a woman on hard times trying to support her kids.
[00:18:34] I like that.
[00:18:36] Right.
[00:18:36] So this particular name with the first child and the prophecy foretold judgment on the dynasty
[00:18:44] of Jehu to which Jeroboam belonged.
[00:18:47] Okay.
[00:18:48] I don't really.
[00:18:49] Okay.
[00:18:49] It's been a while so I can't remember all this that well but okay.
[00:18:54] So God's appointment of Jehu as king was for the purpose of destroying the wicked family
[00:18:59] of Ahab and Jezrebel.
[00:19:00] But Jehu used it as an opportunity to satisfy his ambition for absolute power.
[00:19:08] I don't I only vaguely remember all that.
[00:19:10] Right.
[00:19:11] And he treacherously destroyed all opponents in a series of brutal massacres.
[00:19:16] Oh.
[00:19:16] But now the dynasty he established would be coming to an end.
[00:19:20] So that's what the first name is supposed to represent.
[00:19:23] All of that.
[00:19:24] Okay.
[00:19:24] All right.
[00:19:25] So the second name was a daughter and that one foretold that God will no longer have pity
[00:19:31] on the northern kingdom but will allow it to suffer the full penalty of its sins.
[00:19:37] So he's like fuck you die.
[00:19:39] It signifies the people of Israel not finding mercy and in consequence of their guilt God's
[00:19:45] rejection.
[00:19:46] I knew God.
[00:19:48] Right.
[00:19:49] However, of course we all know he will not withdraw his mercy from Judah but will
[00:19:54] protect it by his remarkable miraculous power blah blah blah whatever.
[00:20:00] So anyway then the third kid was another son and by that point God was like fuck all y'all
[00:20:06] he no longer recognized Israel as his people and the nation and then later Judah as well
[00:20:12] would be cut off from him and taken into captivity.
[00:20:16] So those are supposed to all be three separate prophecies.
[00:20:19] Got it.
[00:20:20] Okay.
[00:20:20] And then of course despite these judgments God will have pity on Israel and Judah didn't
[00:20:26] you know.
[00:20:26] Of course.
[00:20:27] Yeah.
[00:20:27] Right.
[00:20:28] So he promises to repair the loss to his church by calling in the Gentiles and by uniting
[00:20:34] all the children of God under one head the Messiah in the latter days.
[00:20:39] Did you get any of that?
[00:20:40] I didn't.
[00:20:41] I didn't hear him say that.
[00:20:43] No.
[00:20:43] Yeah, I didn't hear him say those words either.
[00:20:45] No.
[00:20:45] Now I have stuff sprinkled in that's helpful and then I have stuff that is like
[00:20:50] I'm being sarcastic because I got it from an apologist who just decided he was going to
[00:20:55] tell us things that he thought it should mean.
[00:20:56] Yeah, I was going to say that sounds like somebody Christian just kind of tossed that
[00:21:00] in there for their own you know.
[00:21:02] Yeah.
[00:21:02] They wanted that in there.
[00:21:04] Messiah.
[00:21:05] But maybe I'm wrong.
[00:21:06] Maybe I missed a bit.
[00:21:07] Okay well they didn't say that.
[00:21:09] I don't recall that part.
[00:21:10] It didn't say it.
[00:21:11] That's why.
[00:21:11] I know.
[00:21:12] No.
[00:21:13] So that is all I have for this chapter.
[00:21:16] I feel like we're off to a good start even though it's shitty.
[00:21:19] Right.
[00:21:20] It's a story.
[00:21:20] It is.
[00:21:21] It is.
[00:21:21] Which is better than a lot of the older stuff was.
[00:21:24] Yeah.
[00:21:24] So I mean I'm happy about that.
[00:21:25] Yeah and we do want to know what happens next.
[00:21:28] Definitely.
[00:21:29] And you can't always say that about this fucking book.
[00:21:32] No, definitely not.
[00:21:33] So that was Hosea chapter one.
[00:21:36] God damn it I almost said his name wrong again.
[00:21:38] That was indeed Hosea chapter one.
[00:21:42] And we will be back tomorrow with.
[00:21:45] Hosea chapter two.
[00:21:46] Hosea chapter two.
[00:21:48] Yes that one.
[00:21:48] See you then.
[00:21:49] Bye.
[00:22:17] Thanks for watching.
