Hosea Chapter 8: Bible Study by Atheists

Hosea Chapter 8: The Eagle and the Idol

Hey there, fellow skeptics and Bible enthusiasts! In this episode of Sacrilegious Discourse, Husband and Wife dive into Hosea Chapter 8, despite the chaos of everyday life. This chapter picks up with a fresh start, moving away from the previous sections and introducing new grievances from God against Israel.

We kick off with a brief recap of Hosea Chapter 7, where God continues to express his disdain for Israel's insincerity and alliances with foreign nations. Now, as we delve into Chapter 8, we find ourselves amidst new accusations and prophetic warnings.

Highlights include:

1. The Eagle and the Covenant: An eagle (symbolizing the Assyrians) is over the house of the Lord, signaling impending doom because Israel has broken God's covenant and rebelled against His law.

2. Insincere Repentance: Israel cries out to God, acknowledging Him, but their actions show they've rejected what is good, leading to their pursuit by enemies.

3. Political Intrigue: Israel sets up kings and princes without God's consent, leading to further idolatry and their own destruction.

4. Consequences of Sin: The proverb "They sow the wind and reap the whirlwind" underscores that actions have consequences, and Israel's sins will lead to their downfall.

5. Foreign Influence: Despite building altars and offering sacrifices, Israel's worship is deemed insincere, and they will face oppression from foreign powers.

As always, we question the legitimacy and purpose of these ancient texts, drawing modern parallels and challenging age-old beliefs. Whether you're here for the theological critique or just some laughs, this episode has something for everyone.

[00:00:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Welcome to Sacrilegious Discourse. For this is what the sovereign Lord says, Why do you need prophets

[00:00:05] [SPEAKER_01]: to tell people who you are and what you want? If you can justify everything that the God of the Bible

[00:00:11] [SPEAKER_01]: has done, then you can justify any of your behavior. A lot of this mentality is trickling

[00:00:17] [SPEAKER_01]: into what is now mainstream right wing Christianity. I am capable of empathy greater than this

[00:00:25] [SPEAKER_02]: God of the Bible. This is a Bible that they tell kids, this is the good Lord, this is the good book,

[00:00:32] [SPEAKER_02]: this is he is fantasizing about murder, mass murder.

[00:01:02] [SPEAKER_00]: Besides these are the hardest-to-understands for deep and clean water, simply the disc and

[00:01:07] [SPEAKER_00]: the tromber verbin, and the rest, that is what a machine does. Because you always give your best

[00:01:12] [SPEAKER_00]: the gifts, try the best discs of a pizzer, and also take care of children.

[00:01:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Hosea! Wife! Do you know where we are and how the hell we got here and what happened?

[00:01:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, we just got done reading of the Hosea Jesus Christ.

[00:01:32] [SPEAKER_02]: I was having trouble there. My brain went through the whole litany of fucking prophets that we've gone through

[00:01:38] [SPEAKER_02]: and I was like, we had no one like that. Not that, not that. Who's Aia? Who's Aia? That's the one.

[00:01:44] [SPEAKER_01]: You kept trying to say Isaiah for the last time. Why am I saying Joshua?

[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no it's Hosea. Chapter 7 is what we just got done reading.

[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_01]: That's why you calling them Hosea.

[00:01:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Right, what is easier with the nicknames? Because they're not as confusing. Well,

[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_02]: they're still confusing. But anyway, I digress. That was Hosea Chapter 7 that we just finished.

[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_02]: And in that chapter, we heard more about how God thinks the Israelites suck

[00:02:11] [SPEAKER_02]: and they were working with other people in other countries and he's like, you suck.

[00:02:16] [SPEAKER_02]: And they were like, man, we got a do our thing and he's like, you suck and he's like, I'm

[00:02:21] [SPEAKER_02]: a kill you. And of course, if they just stopped sucking then they can be redeemed and they wouldn't suck.

[00:02:26] [SPEAKER_01]: It seems like this is what happened yesterday.

[00:02:29] [SPEAKER_02]: It's basically what happens every time. They suck. He hates them. He kills them.

[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_02]: They might be redeemed. He doesn't hate them. He hates them again later and they kill them again later.

[00:02:38] [SPEAKER_02]: He always chooses to be. It's just like the same fucking pattern over and over and over and over

[00:02:43] [SPEAKER_02]: and it's just really, really irritating at this point. I would feel like, can we break up?

[00:02:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, like at some point, don't you just feel like enough is enough, man?

[00:02:56] [SPEAKER_01]: You're not happy. You keep moving the GoPro.

[00:02:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Right, right. Just fuck off for something. Right? Yeah.

[00:03:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Be big. Like go big or go home. Right? Is what you want to tell God. Like,

[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_01]: right. Say your say and say it loud and proud and come out to all of us or go the fuck away and leave

[00:03:12] [SPEAKER_02]: us alone. So killin' us. Yeah, I feel like they'd be better without them. You know,

[00:03:16] [SPEAKER_02]: they doesn't, he doesn't really seem to do much for them. No, no. I'm like a large scale or anything,

[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_02]: you know? So other than he tells them to multiply, you know, I said so. But just not under the trees

[00:03:28] [SPEAKER_02]: out of the high places and that's that's that's not good. And never with a girl who's menstruating.

[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Right, right. Yeah, that definitely not that. But sometimes with a person shit. Sometimes with your brother's

[00:03:39] [SPEAKER_02]: wife. Yeah, but only in certain cases. Right. Yeah. And everyone's in a while with your mom.

[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Sure. Anyway, that was Josea chapter seven. Sure's fuck what? Which means that today we're

[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_02]: giving in to. Who's head chapter eight? All right. Let's do this. Okay.

[00:03:58] [SPEAKER_01]: All right. So we are hopping into chapter eight of hose head. Josea. Josea and it's a new

[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_01]: little bit. So this is a new little bit. Yeah. Okay. So it's starting fresh. This is like,

[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_02]: oh, meaning that it's not the same section that we're covering the last three episodes or whatever

[00:04:23] [SPEAKER_02]: basically. Right. Right. That you know, ran on. Right. It was the same same sub, whatever heading. Right.

[00:04:31] [SPEAKER_01]: This is this is a completely new area. Okay. All right. Put the trumpets to you. Oh, yeah. Do

[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_01]: that because, you know, that's fun. Mm-hmm. Yeah. And eagle is over the house of the Lord,

[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_01]: because the people have broken my covenant and revealed against my law. That was a lot of things

[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_02]: said in a row that don't make any fucking sense. Right. I'm sure they must make sense to somebody.

[00:04:55] [SPEAKER_01]: But not me. So the eagle? Yeah. Is the asyrians? That was their sign. Okay. All right. So he's a,

[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_01]: you know, sound that sound the clacks and bells. Yeah. Yeah. Warning. The sirens. You know? Right.

[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Let it be known that the asyrians is coming. The syrians is coming. I just want to point out

[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_02]: because a lot of people like to point out things in Josea that relate to the quote unquote

[00:05:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Babylonians. Mm-hmm. But here we are talking about the asyrians again. Right. And Josea. Right.

[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_02]: So these things that they talk about in in my mind refer to the asyrians not the Babylonians

[00:05:32] [SPEAKER_02]: because that was what was impending at the time was the asyrians. Exactly. Right. And because

[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_02]: the same devastation didn't happen with the asyrians has happened with the Babylonians. Right.

[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_02]: People just gloss over the fact that he mentions the asyrians a whole hell of a lot. He does. He really

[00:05:47] [SPEAKER_02]: says, I just want to point that out because to me, I'm like, no, he's talking about the asyrians.

[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_02]: When we're talking about them being captured and conquered, right. That's what he think is

[00:05:55] [SPEAKER_01]: going to happen exactly. So he's saying that asyria has, you know, is on the march, they're coming.

[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_01]: And the reason is because the people have broken my covenant and were about against my law.

[00:06:11] [SPEAKER_01]: As always, they always do that. So now that whole first verse makes perfect sense to you.

[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. Okay. Israel cries out to me, our God, we acknowledge you.

[00:06:23] [SPEAKER_02]: They do, huh? But it doesn't sound sincere. I wouldn't imagine it would. No.

[00:06:29] [SPEAKER_01]: But Israel has rejected what is good and enemy will pursue him. They set up kings without my consent.

[00:06:36] [SPEAKER_01]: They choose princes without my approval with their silver and gold. They make idols for themselves

[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_02]: to their own destruction as every call. And this was us going into like the king's, you know,

[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_02]: books, like kings, one or whatever. There was discussion of how God was just going to let them do their

[00:06:54] [SPEAKER_02]: own thing and choose their own kings, which he wasn't happy about. Right. But it was like a thing, right?

[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, yeah. Okay. I see what you're saying, but I also see what he's saying. He's like,

[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_01]: look, I was not for you guys doing this. And then look, you did it and then make it bad choices.

[00:07:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. And then, you know, the second that you go running off to do your own fucking thing,

[00:07:17] [SPEAKER_01]: you forget to keep the law. And I don't, I don't like to point out though that a lot of these

[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_02]: kings are put into power because of, you know, they're related to each other, not because they're like

[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_01]: voted in. Right. And a lot of times it's one nation, a pointing, a leader, you another one. Yeah.

[00:07:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. Like the Egyptian, the Babylonians have all had influence in these things and I'm sure

[00:07:42] [SPEAKER_01]: we'll be a Syrian testament of influence on point two. Yeah. So that makes it interesting. Right.

[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Samaria, throw out your calf idol. Yeah. Do throw it out. Sure. My anger burns against them. How

[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_01]: long will they be incapable of purity? They are from Israel. They never really came back. So I'm

[00:08:05] [SPEAKER_01]: forever. Right. This calf, a metal worker has made it. It is not God. It will be broken in pieces that

[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_02]: calf of fucking Samaria. Just curious who made the ark? No, uh. No, not that ark. Oh. The Ark of the

[00:08:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Covenant. Um, the worker people. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Much like that made the calf. Yeah. I'm just

[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_02]: for God too. So that's okay. Because maybe, you know, we don't know much about this whole

[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_02]: calf thing, right? Right. Maybe the calf is the vessel for their God, right? Much like the

[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_02]: ark is the throne for their God. Yeah. So it could I don't know anything about the fucking calf.

[00:08:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Right. I'm just speaking hypothetically, right? But on a large scale, why are we getting mad about

[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_02]: the calf when we have the ark and we have the, you know, crosses and we have all the shit.

[00:09:00] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I don't know if you noticed this or not. But believers in this particular God seem to have

[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_01]: been filled with hypocrisy from day one. She seems that way. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They sew the wind and

[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_01]: reap the whirlwind. I'm going to be reading that phrase again in just a moment. Okay. The stalk has

[00:09:20] [SPEAKER_01]: no head. It will produce no flower. We're at to yield grain foreigners with swallow it up. Now I

[00:09:27] [SPEAKER_01]: have some notes about this verse seven. Okay. Sure. Interesting because I said so. Okay. They sew

[00:09:35] [SPEAKER_01]: the wind and reap the whirlwind. Yeah. Okay. This is considered a proverb which states that works,

[00:09:43] [SPEAKER_01]: have rewards and actions have consequences, especially that people may face negative consequences

[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_01]: for their bad actions. Okay. Okay. Got it. Several works. A fiction have the title reap the whirlwind.

[00:09:59] [SPEAKER_01]: And I just put down some that we might be familiar with kind of. Okay. So there's a star trek

[00:10:07] [SPEAKER_01]: book called reap the whirlwind by David Mack in 2007. Okay. Okay. And I'm not familiar with the book.

[00:10:15] [SPEAKER_01]: I am familiar with star trek series. Yeah. There's a one called reap the whirlwind and that's

[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_01]: a 1989 novel by CJ Cherry and Mercedes Lackey. It's part of the sort of knowledge.

[00:10:32] [SPEAKER_01]: No idea. Mercedes Lackey I'm familiar with. She's a very prolific and well known fantasy writer. Okay.

[00:10:41] [SPEAKER_01]: And then there is the Ronnie reap the whirlwind and that's a 2000 Doctor Who audio drama.

[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah. So I thought I definitely need to include those because we know those things.

[00:11:00] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean we know those fandoms. Right. Right. Yeah. So anyway, yeah. So the wind and reap the whirlwind.

[00:11:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Reap with yourself. Got it. You know? Yeah. Anyway, if there were grain we still wouldn't have it because

[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_02]: here is not grow or if it does then the foreigners will get it. Yeah. Okay. Israel has swallowed up.

[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Now she is among the nations like something no one wants for they have gone up to a Syria like a

[00:11:28] [SPEAKER_01]: wild donkey wander in a loan. He from has sold herself to lovers. Although they have sold

[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_01]: themselves among the nations, I will now gather them together. They will begin to waste a way

[00:11:42] [SPEAKER_01]: under the oppression of the mighty king. Though eef from built many altars for sin offerings,

[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_01]: these have become altars for sinning. I wrote for them the many things of my law, but they

[00:11:55] [SPEAKER_01]: were guarded them at something foreign. But dude you didn't actually write them. Right.

[00:12:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Well somebody did. I don't think Moses wrote all the laws everywhere. No, I'm just saying.

[00:12:08] [SPEAKER_02]: He certainly isn't the one that kept them alive in those areas. Right. You know, he was very these

[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_02]: things were very regional. Right. So even though you were worshiping similar God, Yahweh,

[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_02]: right. The idea of what that God is, it's a lot like even in the US, right? We have our areas

[00:12:30] [SPEAKER_02]: of the country that kind of worship this Christian God differently. The south worships a little

[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_02]: different than the north does, right? People in Boston are more Catholic generally speaking,

[00:12:43] [SPEAKER_02]: right? And there's just different areas of the country that worship the same God different ways.

[00:12:50] [SPEAKER_02]: And I can imagine in a time where communication wasn't as accessible as this today,

[00:12:56] [SPEAKER_02]: it would be even more so that way in those days. So they would seem even after some

[00:13:01] [SPEAKER_02]: future generations, these areas that weren't even that far away would seem very foreign and how they

[00:13:05] [SPEAKER_02]: worship their God, that is hypothetically the same God that you worship. Right? Right? So it would

[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_02]: almost be, it would be heretical to them because it's branched so far away in such a short period of time.

[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_02]: And it just that strikes me as how a lot of these problems kind of arise with them having

[00:13:24] [SPEAKER_01]: these issues with their neighbors. It makes me wonder how the early Israelites would get on with

[00:13:32] [SPEAKER_02]: the right wing people today. You know, honestly, I don't think that they would even recognize

[00:13:38] [SPEAKER_01]: themselves and what it is today. I don't think that either group would recognize the other

[00:13:44] [SPEAKER_02]: as a distant relative. Yeah, it would, first of all, they would never, the right wing

[00:13:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Magga called would never go back to what is religion in ancient Israel, right? For multiple reasons

[00:13:58] [SPEAKER_02]: and partly because it's not technically Christianity at that point. So that's part of the reason

[00:14:03] [SPEAKER_02]: but also the people in Israel would be probably horrified at what they have, what they embody

[00:14:10] [SPEAKER_02]: and represent. Right. No, it's just it's not, it's all about heat and fear of mongering and

[00:14:16] [SPEAKER_02]: not, not that that's not present in the Bible. But it's more for preservation of their society as

[00:14:23] [SPEAKER_01]: opposed to division of their society. Right. So well also to back then it was group on group.

[00:14:32] [SPEAKER_01]: And today there's a lot of individual on individual. That's that's very true and it makes it kind of

[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_01]: man. I wrote the things of my law, but then bitches they don't even read it whatever. Right.

[00:14:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Though they offer sacrifices as gifts to me and though they eat the meat, the Lord is not

[00:14:58] [SPEAKER_01]: pleased with them. Now he will remember their wickedness and punish their sins. Boom, bitches.

[00:15:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. They will return to Egypt. Israel has forgotten their maker and built palaces.

[00:15:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Judah has fortified many towns but I will send fire on their cities that will consume their

[00:15:17] [SPEAKER_02]: fortresses. The end. Judah has. Mm-hmm. That's interesting. Mm-hmm. Because again earlier in this

[00:15:23] [SPEAKER_02]: chapter of the same chapter we were talking about a Syria and we have also read from a

[00:15:30] [SPEAKER_02]: apologist that this this whole prophecy in Joseia revolves around the Babylonian exile

[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_02]: because that's convenient for them. Right. But and while it doesn't specifically say that these

[00:15:43] [SPEAKER_02]: events are going to be the Assyrians doing these things, you wouldn't, you wouldn't be talking about

[00:15:50] [SPEAKER_02]: a Syria and the same breath as you're talking about these horrible events that are going to occur

[00:15:56] [SPEAKER_02]: if you didn't mean for them to be done by the Assyrians. Right. You know what I mean? Like there's no

[00:16:01] [SPEAKER_02]: there it doesn't make any sense not to, it doesn't make any sense to mention them if you're

[00:16:05] [SPEAKER_02]: not going to utilize them as that tool. Right. So and we've talked about this too where these

[00:16:12] [SPEAKER_02]: things that they see are what are coming down the pike, they can see it because we're talking

[00:16:18] [SPEAKER_02]: about ancient times we're things build up and you know you see an army coming years in advance

[00:16:24] [SPEAKER_02]: because they can't move as quickly. They gotta collect you know lines and in fortify themselves.

[00:16:30] [SPEAKER_01]: They're able to see the winds of change in government. Right. Right and if it doesn't come true

[00:16:38] [SPEAKER_02]: the nice thing about the Bible is I guess you can just attribute it to the next disaster.

[00:16:42] [SPEAKER_01]: And you can always say that God changed his mind and we prayed hard enough. Sure.

[00:16:48] [SPEAKER_01]: We sacrificed big enough that you know when you retrofit a meeting after the fact you can make

[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_02]: anything work. Sure. You know like that's true about just about anything. So it's it's ridiculous.

[00:17:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Anyway, um oh I should mention if you're listening to this today we we actually recorded these

[00:17:07] [SPEAKER_02]: episodes early so we're actually recording this the night before wife is going in for surgery

[00:17:13] [SPEAKER_02]: on Tuesday morning. Tuesday morning but you're gonna be hearing this on Wednesday morning.

[00:17:18] [SPEAKER_02]: So it'll be the day after so everybody should stop by our discord or patreon or one of our

[00:17:26] [SPEAKER_02]: social media accounts and just you know wish wife uh good luck. Or well not good luck because it's already

[00:17:31] [SPEAKER_02]: happening but you know wish wish wife a speedy every cover. So yeah um I'm a little nervous honestly

[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_01]: they're not putting me out for this they're just gonna numb my arm. Yeah and it's to come

[00:17:47] [SPEAKER_01]: metal play that. Yeah so I'm gonna be like the tin woodman and I'm not sure how I feel about that.

[00:17:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Get you an oil can. Oh yeah. All right well that was Jose a chapter eight.

[00:18:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Sure's book was and possibly I don't want to promise anything because again

[00:18:08] [SPEAKER_02]: circumstances and surgeries and what not but possibly we will be back tomorrow with.

[00:18:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Who's head chapter nine? All right we'll see you then. Bye.

[00:18:23] [SPEAKER_00]: Can't you see that? You're a fast-mover. A lovely shirt on the top of the coffee and said

[00:18:28] [SPEAKER_00]: a flick. No panic. Persil discs retent the day with your craftform form.

[00:18:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Beside themselves the hard-naccicists flaking for deep rain.

[00:18:39] [SPEAKER_00]: A question that's the dream and the rest does that make your washing machine.

[00:18:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Because you always give your best. Try the best discs from Persil.

[00:18:48] [SPEAKER_00]: and go out for a walk from the child.
