You're Always Wrong: A Contradictions Episode

Join Husband and Wife in this episode of Sacrilegious Discourse as they dive into the contradictions of the Bible with their signature humor and skepticism. Despite battling through a few days of research and a less-than-perfect voice, they're back to challenge the accuracy of biblical narratives and have a little fun along the way.

Here's what we're unpacking:

1. Contradictions Galore: Explore the contradictions in the Bible, from whether God knows all or repents, to who really cast Jonah into the sea—the sailors or God?

2. Fish or Whale? Delve into the age-old debate of whether Jonah was swallowed by a fish or a whale, and how translations can lead to different interpretations.

3. Pop Quiz Time: Test your knowledge with a pop quiz about Jonah's tale, featuring questions about Nineveh's population, Jonah's message, and more.

4. Understanding Context: Discuss the importance of historical and cultural context in understanding biblical stories, and why modern readers might miss key details.

Whether you're here for the biblical critique or the candid banter, this episode offers a thought-provoking and entertaining exploration of Jonah's contradictions. [00:00:00] Welcome to Sacrilegious Discourse.

[00:00:01] For this is what the Sovereign Lord says!

[00:00:03] Why do you need prophets to tell people who you are and what you want?

[00:00:07] If you can justify everything that the God of the Bible has done, then you can justify any of your behavior.

[00:00:14] A lot of this mentality is trickling into what is now mainstream right-wing Christianity.

[00:00:20] I am capable of empathy greater than this God of the Bible.

[00:00:26] This is a Bible that they tell kids.

[00:00:29] This is the good Lord. This is the good book.

[00:00:32] He is fantasizing about murder. Mass murder.

[00:00:37] Head over to SacrilegiousDiscourse.com right now to find out how to leave us a review or support us on Patreon.

[00:00:49] Hey there sinners and saints! It's your favorite Bible-bashing duo from Sacrilegious Discourse, and we need your help.

[00:00:54] That's right folks, we're raising funds for some heavenly equipment and a studio that doesn't sound like it's in the depths of hell.

[00:01:01] Our current setup? Let's just say it's more apocalypse than audiophile.

[00:01:05] So if you want to hear us dissect the Bible without the background noise of demonic squirrels, chip in a few bucks.

[00:01:12] We're aiming for $5,000 to upgrade our audio and build a studio worthy of blasphemous banter.

[00:01:17] Donate today and help us spread the good word of atheism.

[00:01:21] You can find a link right on our homepage, SacrilegiousDiscourse.com. Every dollar counts.

[00:01:25] Even if it's from your collection plate!

[00:01:33] Wife!

[00:01:34] Do you know what we're doing today?

[00:01:36] Well, we are, uh, we're doing our contradictions episode.

[00:01:41] No, we're doing You're Always Wrong, followed by a pop quiz.

[00:01:46] Sometimes I'm right though.

[00:01:48] I mean...

[00:01:48] But that's not what this is about.

[00:01:50] That's not what this is about.

[00:01:51] Okay, alright.

[00:01:52] This is about how you're always wrong.

[00:01:53] Alright.

[00:01:54] Because, um, no matter which answer you pick, yes or no, yes or no, true or false, whatever,

[00:02:00] it doesn't matter because the Bible contradicts itself.

[00:02:04] Yeah.

[00:02:04] It's less about you being wrong and more like you, the reader.

[00:02:08] The Bible is wrong.

[00:02:09] The Bible is always wrong.

[00:02:11] Yeah.

[00:02:12] And the reader gets screwed.

[00:02:14] And I get an opportunity to make fun of you and say that you're always wrong.

[00:02:18] Right.

[00:02:18] That's what this is about.

[00:02:19] That's right.

[00:02:20] That's right.

[00:02:47] That's right.

[00:02:48] That's great for everyone.

[00:02:49] I know, right?

[00:02:49] Yeah.

[00:02:50] Uh-huh.

[00:02:51] Alright, are you ready to get into this?

[00:02:52] Sure as fuck am.

[00:02:53] Let's do this.

[00:02:54] Okie dokie.

[00:03:01] Alright, let's get into this contradictions thing.

[00:03:04] Okay.

[00:03:04] Um, it's gonna be really short.

[00:03:07] Because listen.

[00:03:08] Not a lot of contradictions, huh?

[00:03:09] No.

[00:03:09] There were four questions and two of them are ones we've covered ad nauseum.

[00:03:15] And those were, does God know and see all?

[00:03:17] Yes and no and yes and no and yes and no depends.

[00:03:20] Right.

[00:03:20] Um, I'm not even getting into it.

[00:03:22] Yeah.

[00:03:22] Yeah.

[00:03:23] Yeah.

[00:03:23] Another one was, does God repent?

[00:03:24] Yes and no and maybe.

[00:03:26] Yes and no and maybe.

[00:03:27] Yes and no and maybe.

[00:03:27] It depends on the word repent.

[00:03:29] Like some Christians don't even think that that's what the word is actually translated to mean.

[00:03:36] Sure.

[00:03:37] And it says, does God repent of this or does he just fucking regret it?

[00:03:40] No, no.

[00:03:41] You know, that's where you get into a lot of the like back and forth.

[00:03:43] Yeah.

[00:03:43] It's like, well, this doesn't translate here and this doesn't translate there.

[00:03:46] But yet, but yet, they, you know, like, it depends on who you're talking to on any given day.

[00:03:52] And that's why this gets so frustrating is that the type of Christian you're talking to and the exact words and translation that they accept changes from person to person.

[00:04:05] Well, it does.

[00:04:06] And also, we, having done this enough, have even changed what we decided is a good enough question to be included in our, um, does this count?

[00:04:17] Contradictions.

[00:04:18] Yeah.

[00:04:18] And we've decided that those two questions are old and stupid and we don't want to answer them anymore.

[00:04:24] Well, because we've done it a million times.

[00:04:25] Yeah.

[00:04:25] Right.

[00:04:25] So yes and no.

[00:04:26] Right.

[00:04:26] Okay.

[00:04:28] The next one is contradicted within the book itself.

[00:04:34] Okay.

[00:04:35] Who cast Jonah into the sea?

[00:04:36] Was it the sailors or was it God?

[00:04:39] Hmm.

[00:04:39] I would have gone with the sailors.

[00:04:42] Right?

[00:04:42] Yeah.

[00:04:43] According to chapter one, verse 15.

[00:04:46] So they look up Jonah and cast him forth into the sea.

[00:04:49] Right.

[00:04:50] Okay.

[00:04:50] Yeah.

[00:04:50] So that's what happened.

[00:04:51] But guess what?

[00:04:52] I'm apparently wrong.

[00:04:54] You're always wrong.

[00:04:55] You're always wrong.

[00:04:56] Because in chapter two, verse three, it says, for thou hast cast me into the deep.

[00:05:01] Jonah speaking to God.

[00:05:02] So he's saying, you God cast me into the deep in the midst of the seas.

[00:05:06] But then why were those sailors repenting to God?

[00:05:08] See, here's the thing.

[00:05:10] I think this is another case of a stupid question, quite honestly.

[00:05:13] Right.

[00:05:13] Because clearly it was the sailors who physically did it.

[00:05:18] Right.

[00:05:18] And what I think is that Jonah is talking to God saying, through those, through the tools

[00:05:26] of those guys, you had me cast into them.

[00:05:30] Right.

[00:05:30] So I'm like, is that a contradiction?

[00:05:32] Not so much.

[00:05:33] And that's why I'm like, okay, here we go.

[00:05:36] Right.

[00:05:36] And then.

[00:05:37] I mean, to be fair.

[00:05:38] Right.

[00:05:38] I'm trying to be fair to the Bible.

[00:05:42] Right.

[00:05:42] Which I do regret.

[00:05:44] But one must always say that I tried to be objective for objectivity's sake.

[00:05:51] Sure.

[00:05:52] No, I think that that's important that we at least allow for it to, you know, we, we, we're

[00:05:58] not here to just straight bash the Bible.

[00:06:01] That's not what we're doing.

[00:06:02] There are enough contradictions without being stupid about it.

[00:06:06] And there's enough ugly shit in here, you know?

[00:06:08] Yeah.

[00:06:08] Like it takes care of itself with regard to the bad crap in the Bible.

[00:06:12] We don't have to argue about whether it was the sailors or God.

[00:06:16] Right.

[00:06:16] It, it was clearly the sailors physically did it.

[00:06:19] But this is a contradiction in, in some realms and some discussions.

[00:06:24] I guess.

[00:06:24] Sure.

[00:06:25] I, I don't know that it's really a contradiction.

[00:06:27] I've never heard anybody talk about it, but I don't talk to Christians about it a lot.

[00:06:30] Well, there's so many contradictions.

[00:06:31] Not many people talk about many of them.

[00:06:33] So here, here's the thing.

[00:06:34] I think that atheists would consider that a contradiction more than Christians would.

[00:06:41] Sure.

[00:06:41] And I'm not here for that because it's, that's bullshit.

[00:06:44] I'm sorry.

[00:06:45] That's bullshit.

[00:06:45] I agree.

[00:06:46] I agree.

[00:06:46] And I'm not going to team up with the atheists just for the sake of being on the atheist team,

[00:06:51] because that's not how I fucking roll.

[00:06:53] Right.

[00:06:54] You know?

[00:06:54] No, I agree.

[00:06:55] Obviously not trying to cast dispersions on atheists, being one myself.

[00:06:59] No, I think that, I think that the atheist community in general, right, is, is a little predisposed

[00:07:06] to, you know, being a bit more harsh on certain things than they need to be sometimes.

[00:07:13] And this would be, this would be one of those.

[00:07:16] Not always.

[00:07:16] Well, because it was an atheist who put these questions together, right?

[00:07:19] Sure.

[00:07:19] And so I'm like, is that really a contradiction, Mr. Friend atheist?

[00:07:26] I don't believe so.

[00:07:28] No.

[00:07:28] And we'll agree on a 99 points, but not that one.

[00:07:31] Sure.

[00:07:31] Exactly.

[00:07:31] You know?

[00:07:31] That's, that's all I'm saying.

[00:07:33] Yeah.

[00:07:33] So, um, this last one, I'm going to include it even though the contradiction does not appear

[00:07:40] until the new Testament.

[00:07:41] Oh.

[00:07:43] Yeah.

[00:07:43] Okay.

[00:07:43] We're making an exception for this one.

[00:07:45] Okay.

[00:07:46] Because the question is, was Jonah swallowed by a fish or a whale?

[00:07:50] And we know the fucking answer.

[00:07:52] It's a fish.

[00:07:53] Right?

[00:07:53] Yeah.

[00:07:53] It was a big fish.

[00:07:55] According to Jonah chapter one, verse 17.

[00:07:58] Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah.

[00:08:01] Yeah.

[00:08:02] Right.

[00:08:02] And I mean, there was an argument about, is it a fish?

[00:08:04] Well, they called it a whale, but he actually never called it a whale.

[00:08:08] So it was a fish.

[00:08:09] Right?

[00:08:10] Yeah.

[00:08:11] But guess what?

[00:08:12] What?

[00:08:12] We are always wrong.

[00:08:14] Are we now?

[00:08:15] Because in Matthew, which is the first book of the New Testament, Matthew chapter 12, verse

[00:08:22] 40 says, for as Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale's belly.

[00:08:28] Are you sure that that's in all translations though?

[00:08:31] According to the place where I got this contradiction from.

[00:08:37] Okay.

[00:08:37] Um, I, I just wondered because I thought that maybe it was just the new, the King James version.

[00:08:43] So I wasn't sure whether or not that was going to be, you know.

[00:08:47] Right.

[00:08:48] And I thought that it never actually said the whale anywhere in the Bible is what I had

[00:08:53] read.

[00:08:53] So I don't know.

[00:08:55] Okay.

[00:08:56] But according to the source that I used for these questions, um, Matthew refers to the

[00:09:03] fish as a whale.

[00:09:04] Okay.

[00:09:05] So I, I don't know.

[00:09:06] You can call me out on that.

[00:09:07] Honestly, I don't really fucking care.

[00:09:09] I'm not defending it one way or the other.

[00:09:11] All of these were a stretch.

[00:09:12] I only included it because I didn't have one to include.

[00:09:15] Got it.

[00:09:16] Got it.

[00:09:17] Okay.

[00:09:17] So do you care?

[00:09:19] No, I mean, not, not, not necessarily, but I mean, you know, it, I don't know.

[00:09:24] I mean, I would be curious to dig into that a little bit more maybe when we get to Matthew.

[00:09:27] Yeah.

[00:09:27] And that's another thing.

[00:09:29] Um, when we get to Matthew, we're going to have more questions and I didn't want to

[00:09:35] delve too much into translations and stuff with regard to a book we haven't even entered

[00:09:41] yet.

[00:09:42] Right.

[00:09:42] Right.

[00:09:43] Particularly in a, a big part of the book that we haven't entered yet.

[00:09:48] Yeah.

[00:09:48] Like the entire, we're done with being Jewish now part of the book.

[00:09:53] So I w I was just like, whatever.

[00:09:55] Right.

[00:09:56] So, okay.

[00:09:56] So that is the, you're always wrong.

[00:09:59] Okay.

[00:10:00] But having said that, I have a pop quiz for you.

[00:10:03] Do you now?

[00:10:04] I do.

[00:10:04] Okay.

[00:10:04] I got 10 out of 13.

[00:10:07] Okay.

[00:10:07] Beat me.

[00:10:08] I, we're going to find out, aren't we?

[00:10:09] Yeah.

[00:10:10] Um, this was a little bit harder than I thought.

[00:10:13] So buckle up friends.

[00:10:15] I'm buckling up.

[00:10:16] All right.

[00:10:16] Number one, what was the message of Jonah to the people of Nineveh?

[00:10:21] And I'll read you the four choices and then I'll repeat it for our friends listening at

[00:10:25] home who would like to play along.

[00:10:26] Sure.

[00:10:27] Okay.

[00:10:27] Okay.

[00:10:28] Choices are God wants you to repent in 40 days.

[00:10:32] Nineveh shall be overthrown the creation story or the narration of his journeys to the country.

[00:10:39] Okay.

[00:10:40] This was one of the easier ones.

[00:10:42] Yeah.

[00:10:42] Sure.

[00:10:42] But the question again is what was the message of Jonah to the people of Nineveh?

[00:10:47] God wants you to repent in 40 days.

[00:10:51] Nineveh shall be overthrown the creation story or the narration of his journeys to the country.

[00:10:59] I think that it is, I don't know, it's one of two.

[00:11:05] I think that it's the, they're going to be overthrown in 40 days.

[00:11:07] Yeah.

[00:11:08] Okay.

[00:11:08] That is the one you want to go with.

[00:11:10] Got it.

[00:11:10] The other one would be God wants you to repent.

[00:11:12] Right.

[00:11:12] Um, I would say that that is a correct answer, but I don't think it's the correctest.

[00:11:17] Okay.

[00:11:18] I already took this quiz, so I know the one that they want and that is the one they want.

[00:11:22] Got it.

[00:11:23] Cause I got that one right.

[00:11:24] Yeah.

[00:11:24] Okay.

[00:11:24] Okay.

[00:11:25] Yeah.

[00:11:25] Number two, this one I was like, I don't fucking know how many persons are there in the great

[00:11:31] city of Nineveh?

[00:11:32] Nineveh.

[00:11:32] Oh, I know this one.

[00:11:33] Here's your choices.

[00:11:34] Okay.

[00:11:34] Oh, do you know it without any?

[00:11:36] Pretty sure.

[00:11:36] Go ahead.

[00:11:37] We're letting them play along.

[00:11:38] Oh yeah.

[00:11:39] Yeah.

[00:11:39] Okay.

[00:11:39] Okay.

[00:11:39] So yeah.

[00:11:40] Yeah.

[00:11:41] Yeah.

[00:11:41] 10,000 people.

[00:11:42] 10,000 people.

[00:11:43] 24,000 people.

[00:11:44] Less than 50,000 people or more than 120,000 people.

[00:11:49] And again, the question is how many people are there in the great city of Nineveh?

[00:11:54] 10,000.

[00:11:56] 24,000.

[00:11:57] 10,000.

[00:11:58] Less than 50,000 or more than 120,000.

[00:12:01] Pretty certain that it's going to be more than 120,000.

[00:12:05] You're going to be correct on that.

[00:12:06] Yeah.

[00:12:06] And I was like, I have no fucking idea.

[00:12:09] I number, you know, numbers don't stick in the stupid head, the stupid potato head.

[00:12:14] All right.

[00:12:15] Number three.

[00:12:16] How big was the city that Jonah was sent to?

[00:12:19] Was it seven hours journey wide?

[00:12:23] Three days journey wide.

[00:12:25] Ten days journey wide.

[00:12:27] Or 40 days journey wide.

[00:12:29] And I'll play that again.

[00:12:30] Sure.

[00:12:30] Yeah.

[00:12:31] This was one of the easier ones that I got right.

[00:12:33] Right.

[00:12:33] Seven hours journey wide.

[00:12:35] How big was the city that Jonah was sent to?

[00:12:37] Seven hours journey wide.

[00:12:38] Three days journey wide.

[00:12:40] 10 days journey wide.

[00:12:42] Or 40 days journey wide.

[00:12:45] Three days.

[00:12:45] Exactly.

[00:12:46] Yep.

[00:12:47] You're doing good.

[00:12:48] Okay.

[00:12:49] Number four.

[00:12:51] According to Jonah, what belongs to the Lord?

[00:12:54] I had to guess on this and I got it wrong.

[00:12:56] Because I don't fucking know.

[00:12:58] Okay.

[00:12:58] Holiness, righteousness, humility, or salvation.

[00:13:02] According to Jonah, what belongs to the Lord?

[00:13:06] Holiness, righteousness, humility, or salvation.

[00:13:11] Hmm.

[00:13:12] Hmm.

[00:13:13] Hmm.

[00:13:15] Um, uh, who, um, I'm going to go with salvation.

[00:13:20] That's what I went with.

[00:13:21] I think that's wrong.

[00:13:22] Unless this is the one that I guessed and got right.

[00:13:24] Okay.

[00:13:25] Accidentally.

[00:13:26] Yeah.

[00:13:26] But I think that's wrong.

[00:13:27] But I don't know.

[00:13:28] Any, any one of those could have.

[00:13:29] Right?

[00:13:30] They all belong to the Lord.

[00:13:31] But what is the answer that you want?

[00:13:33] All right.

[00:13:34] All right.

[00:13:34] Number five.

[00:13:35] How did the inhabitants of the city react to Jonah's warning?

[00:13:39] This was an easy one.

[00:13:40] I think I'll probably know this one, yeah.

[00:13:41] They ignored it.

[00:13:43] They mocked it.

[00:13:43] They did not believe it.

[00:13:45] They repented.

[00:13:46] Did we even need to repeat that one?

[00:13:48] I'm gonna for our friends listening at home who want to play along.

[00:13:51] Sure, sure.

[00:13:52] How did the inhabitants of the city react to Jonah's warning?

[00:13:56] They ignored it.

[00:13:57] They mocked it.

[00:13:58] They did not believe.

[00:13:59] Or they repented.

[00:14:00] They repented.

[00:14:01] They sure as fuck did.

[00:14:02] Yeah, they did.

[00:14:03] All right.

[00:14:03] Number six.

[00:14:05] What was the first command given to Jonah by God?

[00:14:09] Okay.

[00:14:10] Ready?

[00:14:10] I think I know this one too.

[00:14:11] Yeah.

[00:14:12] Offer sacrifice, buy a ship in Tarshish, go to Nineveh, or forge a chain.

[00:14:18] And here we will ask again.

[00:14:20] Yep.

[00:14:21] What was the first command given to Jonah by God?

[00:14:24] Offer sacrifice, buy a ship in Tarshish, go to Nineveh, or forge a chain.

[00:14:31] And it's gonna be go to Nineveh.

[00:14:33] I believe that is correct.

[00:14:34] Yeah.

[00:14:34] And then he ran the fuck away.

[00:14:36] Yep.

[00:14:36] The opposite direction to Tarshish.

[00:14:38] Right.

[00:14:38] Yep.

[00:14:39] Number seven.

[00:14:41] Number seven.

[00:14:42] Sorry.

[00:14:43] What did those who pay...

[00:14:46] Let me reread that.

[00:14:48] Okay.

[00:14:48] What did those who pay regard to vain idols forsake according to Jonah?

[00:14:56] Hope of steadfast love, sacrifice to God, place of refuge, or the true God?

[00:15:04] What did those who pay regard to vain idols forsake according to Jonah?

[00:15:12] Hope of steadfast love, sacrifice to God, place of refuge, or the true God?

[00:15:19] I will have to go with the true God.

[00:15:22] Sure.

[00:15:22] I have no idea.

[00:15:23] Because they're worshiping idols who aren't the true God, right?

[00:15:26] That's what I would think.

[00:15:27] What the fuck do I know?

[00:15:29] Number eight.

[00:15:30] What did the Lord appoint to attack the plant over which...

[00:15:34] Which was over...

[00:15:36] Okay.

[00:15:36] Let me read that again.

[00:15:37] You know the answer.

[00:15:38] Yeah, I do.

[00:15:39] What did the Lord appoint to attack the plant which was over Jonah?

[00:15:44] Was it wind, drought, worm, or flood?

[00:15:48] What did the Lord appoint to attack the plant which was over Jonah?

[00:15:55] Wind, drought, worm, or flood?

[00:15:58] Worm.

[00:15:59] Of course.

[00:16:00] Yeah.

[00:16:01] Right.

[00:16:01] Number nine.

[00:16:02] How did Jonah describe the God he feared?

[00:16:06] Okay.

[00:16:06] This one was hard to me.

[00:16:08] I know how I describe him.

[00:16:10] I know how I describe him too.

[00:16:11] Ready?

[00:16:12] Let's see if we can go.

[00:16:12] One, two, three, go.

[00:16:13] Dick.

[00:16:13] He's a dick.

[00:16:14] Yeah.

[00:16:16] Okay.

[00:16:17] Okay.

[00:16:17] So your choices are creator of heaven and earth, master of the universe, the one who made the

[00:16:25] sea and the dry land, or the God of Israel.

[00:16:27] Let's read those again.

[00:16:29] Okay.

[00:16:29] How did Jonah describe the God he feared?

[00:16:32] He's a dick.

[00:16:34] No.

[00:16:34] Creator of heaven and earth, master of the universe like He-Man, the one who made the sea and the

[00:16:40] dry land, or the God of Israel.

[00:16:44] I am going to go with the one who made the sea and the dry land.

[00:16:47] I think that's the one I went with, but I don't remember if it was right.

[00:16:50] And I only picked that not because I know the answer, but because this story involved

[00:16:55] both the sea and the dry land.

[00:16:57] Right?

[00:16:57] That's...

[00:16:57] So I figured maybe there's some sort of tie in.

[00:16:59] That's what I wondered.

[00:17:01] Yeah.

[00:17:01] But I don't know.

[00:17:02] All right.

[00:17:02] Number 10.

[00:17:03] After Jonah was hurled into the sea, what was the men's reaction to the Lord after the

[00:17:09] sea ceased from its raging?

[00:17:13] Fear exceedingly, greatly amazed, skeptical, or indifferent?

[00:17:29] They feared the Lord exceedingly.

[00:17:37] Hey, I think I picked greatly amazed.

[00:17:40] Really?

[00:17:40] Yeah.

[00:17:41] I couldn't.

[00:17:41] I knew it was one of those.

[00:17:42] It was either feared exceedingly or greatly amazed.

[00:17:45] They were repenting.

[00:17:47] Like, they were, like, scared that they had, you know.

[00:17:49] Totally right.

[00:17:49] Tossed a prophet into the fucking ocean.

[00:17:51] I don't fucking know.

[00:17:52] If I thought I had tossed a prophet into the ocean, I'd probably be scared, too, if I thought

[00:17:55] God really existed.

[00:17:56] Right.

[00:17:57] I'd be like, goddamn.

[00:17:58] I better fucking, you know, do something.

[00:18:01] Kill a goat.

[00:18:02] I guess, yeah.

[00:18:03] Number 11.

[00:18:04] Which city did Jonah flee towards to escape from the presence of the Lord?

[00:18:09] You gave this answer away already.

[00:18:10] I didn't even remember that it was one of the questions.

[00:18:12] Oopsie.

[00:18:15] Tarshish, Damascus, Ikron, or Ashkelon?

[00:18:18] Which city did Jonah flee towards to escape from the presence of the Lord?

[00:18:25] Tarshish, Damascus, Ikron, or Ashkelon?

[00:18:28] Tarshish.

[00:18:29] Would you have remembered that had I not said it?

[00:18:30] I probably would have, actually, yeah.

[00:18:32] Yeah.

[00:18:33] I don't know.

[00:18:34] That one just stuck in my head.

[00:18:35] Because the Tarshish kind of sticks out in my head as one of those, like, cities that

[00:18:39] were on the port type thing or whatever, so.

[00:18:42] Yeah.

[00:18:42] Well, it was supposed to be towards Spain, I believe.

[00:18:45] The end of the world.

[00:18:46] Yeah.

[00:18:46] Remember?

[00:18:47] Yeah.

[00:18:47] So, I don't know.

[00:18:48] Tarshish just sounds like it would be, like, on the end of the world and headed towards Spain.

[00:18:53] Sure.

[00:18:53] I don't know.

[00:18:54] Yeah.

[00:18:55] Number 12.

[00:18:56] Which part of the city of Nineveh did Jonah make a booth?

[00:19:01] And I was like.

[00:19:01] He made a booth?

[00:19:02] Yeah, I was like, he made a booth?

[00:19:03] I'm wondering if they mean, like, the tent thing that he made.

[00:19:06] Oh.

[00:19:06] Is that what they mean?

[00:19:07] Maybe.

[00:19:08] Yeah, I had no idea.

[00:19:09] Okay.

[00:19:09] All right.

[00:19:10] Was it west, east, north, or south?

[00:19:12] An awesome question again.

[00:19:14] Well, then, yeah.

[00:19:14] Okay.

[00:19:15] Which part of the city of Nineveh did Jonah make a booth?

[00:19:18] Was it west, east, north, or south?

[00:19:21] We're going to say tent here.

[00:19:23] Okay.

[00:19:23] Before I answer.

[00:19:24] Okay.

[00:19:24] And I'm going to say east.

[00:19:26] That's what I picked.

[00:19:27] Assuming that they mean tent.

[00:19:29] If that's the part that they're talking about.

[00:19:30] Because, like, there was never a point where they said booth in the reading that we did.

[00:19:34] Right.

[00:19:34] But oftentimes when you do these quizzes and stuff.

[00:19:36] They're using a different translation.

[00:19:38] Right.

[00:19:38] Yeah, yeah.

[00:19:38] And that changes things.

[00:19:40] Well, and it causes some difficulty for me answering some of this shit.

[00:19:42] Because I'm like, I don't recall them saying that.

[00:19:44] And sometimes I'm right.

[00:19:46] Yeah.

[00:19:46] I'm like, no, that was never said in our translation.

[00:19:49] Exactly.

[00:19:51] All right.

[00:19:51] Last one.

[00:19:52] Ready?

[00:19:52] Number 13.

[00:19:54] Whose son was Jonah?

[00:19:56] Do you remember the name without me?

[00:19:58] When you say it, I probably will know, but I can't recall off the top of my head.

[00:20:01] That's okay.

[00:20:01] We're going to name all four and then read it again.

[00:20:05] Hilkiah, Eliab, Amittai, or Eleazar.

[00:20:09] Number 13.

[00:20:10] Whose son was Jonah?

[00:20:14] Hilkiah, Eliab, Amittai, or Eleazar.

[00:20:20] What was the third one again?

[00:20:22] Amittai.

[00:20:23] I think it was Amittai.

[00:20:24] It was.

[00:20:25] It absolutely 100% was.

[00:20:27] I wanted to say the first one for some reason at first, but then you said Amittai and I

[00:20:31] was like, I think that's it.

[00:20:32] Yeah.

[00:20:33] That was it.

[00:20:33] So, yeah, it did take me a second to figure that one out.

[00:20:36] Yeah.

[00:20:36] But I think I got it.

[00:20:37] Yeah.

[00:20:37] Okay.

[00:20:38] All right.

[00:20:38] Let's go through these.

[00:20:40] How'd I do?

[00:20:40] How'd I do?

[00:20:40] Oh, you want to know your score before we go through them?

[00:20:42] Well, yeah.

[00:20:42] I want to know my score.

[00:20:43] All right.

[00:20:44] I think you only missed one.

[00:20:46] Really?

[00:20:47] Yeah.

[00:20:47] You answered all about one.

[00:20:49] Oh, yeah.

[00:20:50] All right.

[00:20:51] Asshole.

[00:20:52] I hate it when you do better than I do.

[00:20:55] All right.

[00:20:56] Number one, what was the message of Jonah to the people of Nineveh?

[00:20:59] In 40 days, Nineveh shall be overthrown.

[00:21:01] Yeah.

[00:21:02] Yeah.

[00:21:02] We both got that one right.

[00:21:03] Right.

[00:21:03] How many persons are there in the great city of Nineveh?

[00:21:07] I got this one wrong.

[00:21:08] You got it right.

[00:21:09] The answer is more than 120,000 persons.

[00:21:13] Yeah.

[00:21:13] Yeah.

[00:21:13] A bunch.

[00:21:14] Yeah.

[00:21:15] How big was the city that Jonah was sent to?

[00:21:18] Three days.

[00:21:19] Three days journey wide.

[00:21:20] Yeah.

[00:21:20] We both got that right.

[00:21:22] According to Jonah, what belongs to the Lord?

[00:21:25] Salvation.

[00:21:26] Oh, that was the correct answer?

[00:21:27] Mm-hmm.

[00:21:28] Okay.

[00:21:28] I got it right.

[00:21:29] And I don't remember if I got that right or not.

[00:21:31] Right.

[00:21:31] Honestly.

[00:21:32] I know I missed three.

[00:21:34] Three.

[00:21:35] Right.

[00:21:35] Yeah.

[00:21:36] Number five, how did the inhabitants of the city react to Jonah's warning?

[00:21:40] We got this right.

[00:21:41] What did they do?

[00:21:42] They capitulated.

[00:21:44] They repented.

[00:21:45] Yeah.

[00:21:45] They repented.

[00:21:46] Yeah.

[00:21:47] Number six, what was the first command given to Jonah by God?

[00:21:52] What was it?

[00:21:53] I don't remember, honestly.

[00:21:54] Go to Nineveh.

[00:21:55] Go to Nineveh.

[00:21:56] Yeah.

[00:21:56] I'm sorry.

[00:21:56] Yeah.

[00:21:56] You got it right.

[00:21:57] We both.

[00:21:58] It's late.

[00:21:58] And I'm trying to muddle through this.

[00:22:00] You're like, what?

[00:22:00] You just prompt me here.

[00:22:02] Come on.

[00:22:02] Just what?

[00:22:03] Just prompt me.

[00:22:04] I think we both got this one wrong.

[00:22:06] Number seven, what did those who pay regard to vain idols forsake, according to Jonah?

[00:22:12] I think we both picked the true God because that fucking makes sense.

[00:22:16] But the answer was hope of steadfast love.

[00:22:19] Hmm.

[00:22:20] Okay.

[00:22:20] Okay.

[00:22:21] Okay.

[00:22:21] Sure.

[00:22:21] Sure.

[00:22:22] Sure.

[00:22:23] Number eight, what did the Lord appoint to attack the plant which was over Jonah?

[00:22:28] A worm.

[00:22:29] Yep.

[00:22:29] A worm.

[00:22:30] We both got that right.

[00:22:32] How did Jonah describe the God he feared?

[00:22:35] The one who made the sea and the dry land.

[00:22:37] I didn't know that one for sure, but it just made the most sense to me.

[00:22:40] It just made the most sense.

[00:22:41] Yeah.

[00:22:41] Yeah.

[00:22:41] That's the one I guessed as well for the same reason.

[00:22:44] After Jonah was hurled into the sea, what was the men's reaction to the Lord after the

[00:22:49] sea ceased from its raging?

[00:22:51] Scared as fuck.

[00:22:52] Feared exceedingly.

[00:22:53] That is correct.

[00:22:55] Number 11, which city did Jonah flee towards to escape from the presence of the Lord?

[00:23:01] Tarshish.

[00:23:02] Tarshish.

[00:23:02] That is correct.

[00:23:03] We both got that one right.

[00:23:04] Well, I mean, you helped us all out there on that one.

[00:23:06] Yeah.

[00:23:06] Yeah.

[00:23:07] Yeah.

[00:23:07] Number 12, and this one we both got right.

[00:23:10] Which part of the city of Nineveh did Jonah make a booth?

[00:23:14] East.

[00:23:14] East.

[00:23:15] So it's the tent that they were talking about.

[00:23:16] Yeah.

[00:23:17] Because that's where he set the tent out to watch to see if something was going to happen

[00:23:21] to the city.

[00:23:22] Yeah.

[00:23:22] And he was facing the direction that the sun comes up, which is a big deal.

[00:23:26] Because we joked about the time that he was worshipping Ra or something.

[00:23:28] Yeah.

[00:23:28] You know?

[00:23:29] Yeah.

[00:23:29] I mean, it matters.

[00:23:30] It's a big deal to them.

[00:23:31] Yeah.

[00:23:32] Yeah.

[00:23:32] Number 13, whose son was Jonah?

[00:23:36] Amittai.

[00:23:36] We both got that right.

[00:23:38] Yep.

[00:23:38] Yep.

[00:23:38] All right.

[00:23:39] So you did better than I did.

[00:23:41] I missed three.

[00:23:43] You only missed one.

[00:23:45] And that's our quiz.

[00:23:47] Okay.

[00:23:48] And that's Jonah.

[00:23:48] That's Jonah, bitches.

[00:23:50] Yep.

[00:23:50] That was not, as things go, was not a bad story.

[00:23:54] No.

[00:23:55] No.

[00:23:55] And it had a lot of symbolism in it that I appreciated from a literary standpoint.

[00:24:00] Yeah.

[00:24:01] I like that kind of analysis.

[00:24:04] Right.

[00:24:04] That you can take into the better written stories.

[00:24:06] It was a little meatier than some of the other shit we've read.

[00:24:08] Yeah.

[00:24:08] You know, like as far as, I really appreciated it once we got into the Q&A, so like that

[00:24:13] was one of my favorite Q&As we've done.

[00:24:16] Me too.

[00:24:17] Because I didn't understand shit until we got to that point.

[00:24:19] Yeah.

[00:24:20] And then we got into that Q&A and I was like, oh my God, this is pretty fantastic actually.

[00:24:25] Like I understood why he ran away.

[00:24:27] Like, yeah, I wouldn't want to go either.

[00:24:29] But then when we understood, no, no, no, you think you know why he ran away.

[00:24:34] You don't know why he ran away.

[00:24:36] Right.

[00:24:36] Right.

[00:24:37] Right.

[00:24:37] Oh, and then at the end when it was, why was he so mad?

[00:24:40] Like we had no idea.

[00:24:42] It's really hard to like it without, because we've talked about how, where, you know, the

[00:24:46] people that wrote these initially, they assume you understand this context, right?

[00:24:51] Yes.

[00:24:52] Because, because these things were happening to them and around them and everything.

[00:24:55] Right.

[00:24:55] And they were, they were known stories in that land.

[00:24:58] Right.

[00:24:58] Yeah.

[00:24:59] But us over here, never having read the Bible, I don't understand off the top of my head

[00:25:04] that Nineveh is part of the Assyrian territory.

[00:25:07] Right.

[00:25:08] You know, I don't understand that that's enemy territory.

[00:25:09] Right.

[00:25:10] So it wasn't something that I picked up on at all.

[00:25:12] Well.

[00:25:13] And I'm sure there were people listening going, oh, these guys are fucking idiots.

[00:25:15] Oh, I'm sure.

[00:25:16] I'm sure.

[00:25:17] But to put it in terms of today, it's kind of like if we're like one time I was talking

[00:25:24] to my mom and I was trying to talk about the Proud Boys.

[00:25:28] Right.

[00:25:29] Right.

[00:25:29] My mom, even though she's MAGA, had no fucking idea what I was talking about.

[00:25:34] She'd never heard of the Proud Boys.

[00:25:35] And I'm like, you're MAGA.

[00:25:36] You're supposed to understand the Proud Boys.

[00:25:38] No, they wouldn't talk about them.

[00:25:40] That's, that's something that's a fringe thing.

[00:25:42] Like, so the right would never admit that to the right.

[00:25:44] Right.

[00:25:45] Because that's, that's a thing that happens because they are so far to the right.

[00:25:49] Yeah.

[00:25:50] And I'm like, your boy literally told these Nazi lovers to stand by and stand back and

[00:25:57] stand by.

[00:25:58] Like, that's the whole point of, of what that was about.

[00:26:01] And my mom's like, what are you talking about?

[00:26:03] What's a proud boy?

[00:26:04] And like, I had to explain, like, no, it's not a boy who is proud.

[00:26:08] It's a group.

[00:26:09] But like, you speak and you assume that the people around you understand the context of

[00:26:15] what you're talking about.

[00:26:17] Right.

[00:26:17] And this is like, my example was from like actual current times.

[00:26:23] Sure.

[00:26:24] And that's funny because this Jonah stuff is from thousands of years ago.

[00:26:29] So yeah.

[00:26:30] Like, if half the time your audience doesn't even know what the fuck you're talking about

[00:26:34] in the current day, you have to know that thousands of years later, we're not going

[00:26:38] to have a fucking clue.

[00:26:39] I think that's a good reason why most Christians don't really understand the Bible that they

[00:26:43] worship.

[00:26:44] Right.

[00:26:44] Yeah.

[00:26:44] This, this religion that they worship, they don't really understand what they are doing

[00:26:49] because why would you bother trying?

[00:26:52] Like, you have to, you have to learn so much to get that to the point where you are not

[00:27:00] ignorant about it, that you, you, it takes too much work.

[00:27:03] Right.

[00:27:03] So you just take people's, you know, word for it and be like, okay, yeah, that's, yeah,

[00:27:09] that's what it is.

[00:27:10] Yeah.

[00:27:10] So, because unless you actually read through everything yourself and do so much studying,

[00:27:16] like, where do you even start?

[00:27:17] And like with us, well, we just started at the beginning cause we don't know anything.

[00:27:21] I don't know what to tell you, Christian, who, you know, thinks, you know, some of it,

[00:27:25] I don't know where to tell you where to start.

[00:27:27] Right.

[00:27:28] Right.

[00:27:28] You know, you already think, you know, some of it, so some of it you're going to space

[00:27:32] out because you're like, yeah, yeah, I already know this part.

[00:27:34] Right.

[00:27:35] Or you're going to be like, um, what are you talking about?

[00:27:38] Skip to something I know.

[00:27:41] Right.

[00:27:42] All right.

[00:27:42] Well, that was, that's it for Jonah.

[00:27:45] That's it for Jonah.

[00:27:46] Congratulations to everybody.

[00:27:48] If you've been listening along with us and finishing up another book of the Bible,

[00:27:51] another book of the Bible is done, son.

[00:27:54] Yeah.

[00:27:55] And we're going to be moving on.

[00:27:56] Well, I got the weekly replay that'll be coming out.

[00:27:58] And then we're going to be moving on to Micah.

[00:28:01] Yep.

[00:28:01] And we'll be doing that probably Tuesday or Wednesday.

[00:28:05] I don't know.

[00:28:05] Well, soon.

[00:28:06] Very soon.

[00:28:06] I believe we're recording it Monday or Tuesday night, but I believe it's coming out Wednesday

[00:28:11] morning.

[00:28:11] Yeah, I think that's right.

[00:28:12] Okay.

[00:28:13] All right.

[00:28:13] Well, we'll see you guys then.

[00:28:14] Bye.
