Lamentations Chapter 3: Bible Study BY Atheists

Lamentations Chapter 3: Bible Study BY Atheists

Strap in, heathens and skeptics! This week, we're diving headfirst into the biblical belly of the beast with our latest episode, "Lamentations Chapter 3" Your irreverent hosts, with tongues firmly planted in cheeks, are taking you on a whirlwind tour of the highs (are there any?) and lows (oh, so many) of one of the Bible's most depressingly poetic rants. It's a no-holds-barred takedown where divine wrath and human misery are served up with a side of sarcasm and a sprinkle of existential dread.

Join us as we navigate the murky waters of Lamentations 3, where God's love language seems to include a little too much smiting for comfort. We'll dissect the oddly phallic imagery of divine punishment and marvel at the masochistic streak that has worshippers coming back for more, even when it sounds like a toxic relationship 101. Can we get a collective eye-roll for the divine-human paradox, please?

Our snark-o-meter is cranked to the max as we ask the hard-hitting questions: Why does the Almighty's "tough love" look suspiciously like an abuser's playbook? And what's with the biblical penchant for misery and rods? Is it divine inspiration, or just men projecting their issues in high-definition?

In this episode, we pull no punches. We dissect the relationship dynamics between humanity and a seemingly cruel deity, poking fun at the enduring love for a heavenly father figure who apparently missed the memo on "do no harm." We'll look at Jeremiah's penchant for dramatic monologues and how his self-pity party might just be the ancient equivalent of subtweeting.

Get ready for a podcast full of heretical hilarity and scriptural satire as we challenge the portrayal of God in ancient texts and the blind loyalty of His fan club. If you've ever wondered what a therapy session for deities might look like, or how to craft the perfect prayer for the vengeful, this is the podcast episode for you. Remember, laughter is the best medicine, especially when the prognosis is biblical bleakness.

So, download, tune in, and prepare to laugh until you cry, or cry until you laugh – it's all the same in Lamentations Chapter 3. Don't forget to like, subscribe, and offer a sacrifice of five stars to appease the podcasting gods. Because, let's face it, we could all use a little divine favor... or at least a good chuckle.

[00:04:37] I'm the man you are the man damn the man damn the man

[00:04:40] Yeah, I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of the Lord's wrath

[00:04:46] Man, why is he always gonna be afflicting you with his rod? I hate the Lord's rod

[00:04:52] It's not a good end. I mean that doesn't just say it all for the Bible though

[00:04:56] Yeah, like the male rod right right but like the the the male oriented

[00:05:03] way that the Bible portrays itself and

[00:05:05] Just the way they speak about things is so

[00:05:09] male yeah, and you know just men and

[00:05:13] dicks and penises and

[00:05:16] Falex and I'm just like come on guys rods and stuff

[00:05:21] Y'all fucking monkeys he has driven me away and made me walk in darkness rather than light

[00:05:28] Indeed he has turned his hand against me again and again all day long

[00:05:34] I'm sorry

[00:05:36] So sore all day long he was giving me that rod

[00:05:42] He has made my skin

[00:05:44] And my flesh grow old and has broken my bones

[00:05:56] He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship

[00:06:02] He has made me dwell in darkness like those long dead he has walled me in so I cannot escape

[00:06:10] He has weighed me down with chains

[00:06:14] Man he has made it to where I hate everything. He's made me fucking sad

[00:06:19] He's made sad sad sad hate hate dark dark sad, right? Yeah, okay. It's a lot of bad

[00:06:28] Even when I call out or cry for help

[00:06:31] Shut down my prayer damn it doesn't say that oh yeah, well I didn't figure it said it didn't say that yeah

[00:06:37] But he shut down my he shuts it down. Yeah

[00:06:41] He has barred my way with blocks of stone. He's made my paths crooked

[00:06:47] Mmm, you gotta stay on those straight paths, you know, but I can't cuz

[00:06:51] He made him crooked you cut through and still stay on straight, you know like could you cut across the grass?

[00:06:58] You guys stay on the road they have signs that say stay off the grass is that what the problem is probably okay

[00:07:03] Like a bear lying in wait like a lion in hiding

[00:07:06] He dragged me from the path and mangled me and left me without help

[00:07:12] I mean it's it's it's a thing, but what a dick. Yeah, I mean this he sounds mean

[00:07:18] He does he sounds like a really mean guy

[00:07:21] He's giving you the the he came on to let you say a prayer

[00:07:24] And then he's dragging you and mangling you from the path and I turn your shit up and things are dark

[00:07:29] And he's got his rod. So I mean, you know, he drew his bow and made me the target for his arrows

[00:07:36] Wow, I mean get a new God

[00:07:39] Imagining imagining them shooting air, you know the apple off their heads, right? Yeah

[00:07:45] He pierced my heart with arrows from his quiver

[00:07:48] I became the laughing stock of all my people. They mock me and song all day long

[00:07:55] Of course, we're talking about Jerusalem. Is it Jerusalem or is this Jeremiah? He's like no

[00:08:00] I think we're talking about Jerusalem. Oh

[00:08:02] Everybody's making fun of me now. It's too generic to be about a specific person

[00:08:06] I think this is Judah slash Jerusalem. All right. All right. I'll take your word for it

[00:08:11] You are the man after all I am the man damn the man

[00:08:14] He has filled me with bitter herbs and given me gall to drink

[00:08:18] He has broken my teeth with gravel. He has trampled me in the dust

[00:08:24] This is so depressing. It is like why would you ever even consider?

[00:08:29] Worshiping this God again like of all like the things that this

[00:08:33] God is doing to let's just assume that they're talking about the city

[00:08:38] But like to put it in these words

[00:08:40] You're you're you're seeing the destruction as this bad, right? Like this is how bad it is. Yeah, and yet

[00:08:47] You're gonna say in the end. You're gonna say we worship this God. Yep. So I just I question

[00:08:55] That amount of loyalty to someone who treats you like absolute shit, right? He fucks up my shit

[00:09:02] I love him so right. Yeah, I have been deprived of peace. I have forgotten what prosperity is

[00:09:08] So I say my splendor is gone and all that I had hoped from the Lord. I

[00:09:15] Remember my affliction and my wandering the bitterness and the gall. I remember them and my soul is downcast within me

[00:09:22] sigh, okay

[00:09:25] Yeah, this I call to mind and therefore I have hope

[00:09:31] Wait they're calling to mind all the shittiness that happened or the thing that's about there about say

[00:09:35] There's a colon so I'm assuming he's like but there's this thought I'm about to share with you

[00:09:39] That gives me hope right. Yes, even even in the midst of getting beat the fuck down, right?

[00:09:45] Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed for his compassion never fail

[00:09:52] This is the same God that is mangling you right beating you with his rod

[00:09:57] I mean like what the fuck he doesn't hear my prayer, but he has great love and then

[00:10:04] His compassion's never fail except for like when they just did right right like how do you hold these two ideas in your head at

[00:10:11] The same time look I can hold opposing views in my head at the same time because I'm a complex person sure these

[00:10:19] Opposing views do not work, right?

[00:10:21] They don't he's a hateful violent vengeful petty jealous God and I love him so that doesn't work

[00:10:30] Yeah, yeah, so it sounds like you're as much the problem as he is

[00:10:34] Right, you know not to victim blame

[00:10:36] But I am gonna victim blame a little bit because you're trying to drag other people in with you right and change our laws

[00:10:42] According to you wish just like we should set up like a practice for people to come see us too

[00:10:48] So we can help them get over abusive gods. You know, right? I mean, I'm just saying yeah

[00:10:52] Like this is what's happening here, right? I want you to spell all of this out

[00:10:55] He's done these shitty things to me right, but I love him so I want you to just say that out loud

[00:11:02] Like if this was a human we would you know be urging you to get out of that toxic relationship

[00:11:08] 100% like I'm just imagining all these things that they're talking about with regard to how God treats them throughout the whole Old Testament

[00:11:16] Mm-hmm, and and you know specifically just now like in this chapter. Yeah, but I'm imagining this being a conversation about a

[00:11:26] Romantic partner that you have or whatever or father. Yeah, and the I

[00:11:31] Know without a doubt the therapist is going to want you to break away from that toxic relationship

[00:11:37] Yeah, or help you have the tools to figure out how to come to that conclusion

[00:11:43] Sure sure

[00:11:44] But it's not even a question when it comes to human and human like human interaction, right?

[00:11:48] Yeah

[00:11:49] The only time we question that idea is when it comes to the fucking God that no one can prove that doesn't

[00:11:55] Seem to talk to anybody right like this is the only exception is this this God that

[00:12:01] Just beats us the fuck down

[00:12:04] Mm-hmm, and then we still love it for whatever fucking reason. Yeah. Yeah doesn't work for me. I don't get it

[00:12:10] I don't either fucking get it. I don't either they are new every morning great as your faithfulness

[00:12:16] I say to myself the Lord is my portion therefore. I will wait for him

[00:12:22] Hmm, I don't really know what that means, but it sounds stupid

[00:12:25] I mean it sounds like you're gonna cower in darkness take the wrong path path while getting mangled and waiting on

[00:12:30] God to decide that he's not gonna do that to you anymore. Please love me again, sir

[00:12:34] Please please don't beat me. Please sir. I'm sorry sir. Please please love me, right?

[00:12:40] The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him. No, it's not he's not he's not good to you

[00:12:47] Right to the one who seeks him

[00:12:50] No, he's not it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord

[00:12:55] Don't want to raise a ruckus or ask any questions. He's just hush right

[00:12:59] It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young is it?

[00:13:04] Hmm is it though? Okay, let him sit alone in silence for the Lord has lighted on them

[00:13:11] Light on me Lord. I mean this this seems like a good

[00:13:15] like

[00:13:17] Way that they would allow for corporal punishment and you know things like that

[00:13:21] Yeah, because it's they're like you need to be you know beaten down in order to appreciate the love that you're getting from this

[00:13:29] God, right? So yeah, let him bury his face in the dust there may yet be help there may

[00:13:36] That's the that's why I'm not but there may let him bury his face in the dust there may yet be hope right what?

[00:13:44] Like that doesn't know no

[00:13:46] No, let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him and let him be filled with disgrace

[00:13:54] Okay, you you I'm gonna pass on that you first for no one is cast off by the Lord forever

[00:14:02] No, that's not exactly true though just for several generations

[00:14:06] But right. Yeah, I mean that if we're saying no one is in like the entire

[00:14:12] Realm of history, maybe he did love a couple of people over time according to the Bible

[00:14:17] Right, but generally he is fucked over a lot of people to yeah. Yes, so though he brings grief

[00:14:23] He will show compassion so great as his unfailing love

[00:14:27] You say so right for he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to anyone

[00:14:32] I call bullshit on that he

[00:14:35] Willingly get the fuck out of here. In fact, I think that we read parts where he actually enjoys it

[00:14:42] Yeah, yeah to crush underfoot all prisoners in the land to deny people their rights before the most high

[00:14:50] To provide to deprive them of justice would not the Lord see such things

[00:14:55] I mean, I would assume if he is a God that a God would see such things

[00:15:01] Mm-hmm

[00:15:03] But chooses still not to do anything about them for whatever fucked up stupid reason that he has

[00:15:09] This chapter is why not only don't I believe in God, but why actually I cannot believe right? Yeah

[00:15:15] No, this is bullshit. I hate this chapter FYI. You didn't know no. I mean, you know why I

[00:15:21] Feel like we say this sorry guys

[00:15:23] I feel like we say this every time but like this book started off with a lot of promise

[00:15:29] Did it and it's going down fucking hill

[00:15:33] Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it? It is not from the mouth of the most high

[00:15:40] I'm sorry. Let me start over is it not from the mouth of the most high that both calamities and good things come

[00:15:48] That's what they would have us believe. Yes, good and bad things do happen

[00:15:52] Right, but not because of a fucking God, right?

[00:15:55] Why should the living complain when punished for their sins?

[00:15:59] Because I get to be the judge of that motherfucker not to you, right?

[00:16:03] Let us examine our ways and test them and let us return to the Lord. No, thanks

[00:16:08] Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven and say

[00:16:13] Okay, ready. I'm ready what we're supposed to say. Okay. Yeah, this is the prayer

[00:16:16] We should pray. Oh, okay

[00:16:18] We have sinned and rebelled and you have not forgiven you have covered yourself with anger and pursued us

[00:16:25] You have slain without pity

[00:16:27] You have covered yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can get through you have made a scum and refuse among the nations

[00:16:35] All our enemies have opened their mouths wide against us. We have suffered terror and pitfalls

[00:16:42] ruin and destruction

[00:16:44] Streams of tears flow from my eyes because my people are destroyed

[00:16:48] My oh, we're done quoting the things that's what we're supposed to say to God. Yeah, we're supposed to say we have

[00:16:53] Hey, you're being a dick. Yeah, that's basically all those things. Yeah, okay

[00:16:58] Okay, now now we're back to whoever is saying this shit. Yeah. Yeah supposedly Jeremiah or Jerusalem

[00:17:04] Streams of tears flow from my eyes because my people are destroyed

[00:17:08] My eyes will flow

[00:17:10] Unceasingly without relief until the Lord looks down from heaven and sees

[00:17:15] What I see brings grief to my soul because of all the women in my city

[00:17:20] Those who were my enemies without cause hunted me like a bird

[00:17:25] They tried to end my life in a pit and through stones at me now

[00:17:29] You know what this does sound like this was written by Jeremiah

[00:17:32] Because this is actually referencing things that happened to him. Yeah, he's like this is socks

[00:17:37] This is bullshit. Right. I hate this people people were mad at me

[00:17:41] This sounds much more like Jeremiah. Yeah, the waters closed over my head and I thought I was about to perish

[00:17:46] I called on your name Lord from the depths of the pit. You heard my plea

[00:17:52] Do not close your ears to my cry for relief

[00:17:55] You came near when I called you and you said do not fear

[00:17:59] You Lord took up my case. You redeemed my life

[00:18:03] Lord, you have seen the wrong done to me uphold my cause

[00:18:07] You have seen the depth of their vengeance all their plots against me Lord

[00:18:12] You have heard their insults all their plots against me what my enemies whisper and mutter against me all day long

[00:18:19] Look at them sitting or standing. They mock me in their songs

[00:18:23] Pay them back what they deserve Lord for what their hands have done. This is definitely written by Jeremiah

[00:18:29] Yeah, because he's this is total. This is exactly what was happening

[00:18:33] Those being used early on by Jeremiah

[00:18:36] Yes, yes put a veil over their hearts and may your curse beyond them

[00:18:41] Pursue them in anger and destroy them from under the heavens of the Lord the and wow

[00:18:47] It's it we commented on this throughout Jeremiah

[00:18:50] But like it must be nice to have a God that you can use as a personal vengeance tool, right?

[00:18:55] You know not that like I don't blame him

[00:18:57] I mean like I might make such a prayer from the pit sure

[00:19:01] If I'm about to die in a fucking my enemy type thing. Yeah, yeah, sure

[00:19:05] Oh, you gonna get it right? I have if I get out of here y'all better run, right? Yeah, yeah

[00:19:11] I might make similar but I don't know about that whole asking God get him God, right

[00:19:18] Yeah, that's a little bit different

[00:19:20] And he's writing this from the perspective of he's in a pit ready to die

[00:19:25] And you know he's talking about all this shittiness that's happening

[00:19:29] Mm-hmm, and of course you almost died because people didn't like you man. Yeah, so whatever but also let's look at why

[00:19:36] Right, yeah double agent and you were talking shit, right?

[00:19:40] And you were all you were called out on that double agent ship more than once

[00:19:43] Yeah, they did tell you stop and then you kept going and they were like oh

[00:19:48] Okay, we're gonna put you in a pit now

[00:19:51] Well, you remember yeah, they called him out in a then but they also called him out on it after the fall of Jerusalem

[00:19:57] To yeah, like there was multiple times multiple times he was called out on that stuff

[00:20:01] I mean early on they put them in that stockade. That was like a torture device

[00:20:05] But even before that they were like you need to shut the fuck up. Yeah, and he was like nah, right?

[00:20:11] So I mean

[00:20:13] Yes, we're the people like mean to him. Yes

[00:20:17] Um

[00:20:18] Did he deserve like the amount of pain and angst that came against him?

[00:20:24] questionable like probably not right but

[00:20:28] Is it you know expected absolutely? I feel like this was a little bit out of place. Well

[00:20:34] Lamentations is only five chapters. So yeah, I don't want to say it's out of place, but it feels

[00:20:39] Not in the same vein as the first chapter

[00:20:42] Yeah, the first chapter for sure was like this is sadness and you know

[00:20:47] We as a as a people are mourning the loss of our city right and the loss of our birthright

[00:20:52] Well, I just assumed when we started this chapter that we were reading this from the perspective of Jerusalem

[00:20:58] But it was Jeremiah. It was Jeremiah. So yeah, that's interesting. Mm-hmm. All right

[00:21:03] Well, that was Lamentations chapter three sure as fuck was which means that we'll be back tomorrow with

[00:21:10] Lamentations chapter four. All right, we'll see you then bye

[00:21:14] Hey wife, I guess that's the end

[00:21:24] It doesn't have to be we are on lots of social media platforms like Twitter our handle there is sacrilegious underscore D for these nuts
