Lentsgiving

Lentsgiving

Are you ready for a heathen’s take on the holiest hunger games? Tune in to our latest irreverent episode, "Lentsgiving," where we dive fork-first into the smorgasbord of Lent without actually giving up anything (because, let's be real, self-denial is overrated). We're dishing out a full serving of skepticism with a side of sarcasm as we explore the Christian tradition of Lent, a 40-day marathon of fasting, sacrifice, and, apparently, confusing Easter with a rabbit's birthday bash.

.

We’ll start you off with an appetizer of "Understanding Lent in Christianity," where we'll chew on the concept of the Big Bunny Bonanza (you might know it as Easter) and spit out the bones of religious rites with a sprinkle of Midwestern linguistic flair. Discover why "lint" isn't just what you find in your dryer and why we think giving up religion for Lent might just be the best thing since sliced (unleavened) bread.

Then, feast your ears on "Understanding Lent and Easter Traditions" as we digest the 40-day fast with a grain of salt, questioning the origin story that's as patchy as grandma's old quilt. We'll sip on the cup of "bright sadness" (sounds like an oxymoron, we know) and nibble on the notion of Lenten sacrifices that are less about spiritual enlightenment and more about one-upping your neighbor's chocolate abstinence.

Indulge in the "Easter Season and Mardi Gras" segment, where we compare divine celebrations to the ultimate cheat day before the diet starts. And just when you thought it was safe to go back into the pantry, we bring you "The Easter Holy Week Explanation," dishing out the history of Ash Wednesday and Passion Week with the enthusiasm of someone who just found out there's no Easter Bunny.

As we head into the "Religious Holidays and Lenten Sacrifices" section, we're not just breaking bread; we're breaking down the "get out of jail free card" that is Divine Mercy Sunday. We juxtapose this with a glance at the Jewish calendar, all while considering what sacrificial lambs (figurative, of course) we could offer up for a laugh.

Finally, in "Giving Up Habits for Lent," we brainstorm a list of personal vices to ditch that range from the serious (like nail-biting) to the ridiculous (sleeping without a pillow? Come on!). Join us as we critique and jest our way through these traditions, all in good fun and with the underlying message that maybe, just maybe, we can find some common ground through shared chuckles.

So, if you’re up for a bit of Lenten levity, hit play on "Lentsgiving" and join your favorite godless guides for a journey through this time-honored ritual. Whether you’re devout, doubtful, or somewhere in between, we promise more laughs than a confessional booth at a comedy club.

[00:01:16] Welcome to sacrilegious discourse. I'm husband and I'm wife. Together we're reading the Bible

[00:01:20] for the very first time. We grew up without religion and wanted to know what all the fuss was about.

[00:01:26] Well, what did we learn so far? That God is a dick and apparently some people believe in talking

[00:01:31] donkeys. We're not trying to pass ourselves off as experts. Nope, we're just reading the Bible for

[00:01:36] the first time and giving our first take reaction. If you'd like to join us in this venture

[00:01:40] you might consider starting at episode one. Otherwise jump in wherever you like.

[00:01:44] All right, let's go read the Bible. Yeah, let's get to it.

[00:01:54] Husband! Wife! Do you know what we're doing today? Well, today is Sunday not only is it Sunday.

[00:02:03] It's the big bunny bananza. Big bunny bananza. Happy Easter! The pastel polusa.

[00:02:08] Pastel polusa. Yeah, oh my gosh! The big eggs, eggs, extravaganza. Oh my god stop. Stop.

[00:02:16] Easter. Happy Easter. Happy Easter. Oh my gosh. There's something wrong with you.

[00:02:24] And this isn't just an everyday episode. This isn't just a regular episode. No. Some people are going to

[00:02:29] hear this bit right here but they're not going to hear the rest of it. You know why? Why? Because this

[00:02:34] is a Patreon episode. Patreon! So what do we want over today in our Patreon episode? Have you ever heard

[00:02:43] people say they're giving up something for lent? I have. And did you kind of like understand the

[00:02:49] words that they were saying but not really know what the fuck? I've come to understand what it is

[00:02:55] somewhat, but I have to admit that it was something that I didn't discover until almost adulthood

[00:03:03] and maybe even later adulthood. I don't know. Well, I have to be honest and say I understood it

[00:03:10] to mean giving up a habit of something or just sacrificing some truth but I didn't know the

[00:03:17] significance of it until tonight when I was doing research for it. Yeah. Okay. How about you? Did

[00:03:24] you understand why? I know it was religious. But so you didn't know either though? Not really no.

[00:03:30] Okay. Yeah. Okay, so that makes me feel better. So lent? Lent? We're going over lent. I'm giving up

[00:03:36] not knowing what lent is for lent. And if you're new to this and you're de-converting or deconstructing

[00:03:42] them, sorry, you could give up religion for lent. Oh yeah. Just giving you an idea. Just to give

[00:03:51] you kind of a, you know, not mixed signals there but, you know, just give you a spoiler alert.

[00:03:57] Lent is done now but that's okay, but that's okay. Yeah, you could still you could next year then

[00:04:03] make sure you give it up for anti-lens. All right so are you ready to get into this? I chose

[00:04:10] fuck him. All right, let's go do this. Okay, don't keep. All right, so what is lent? What the

[00:04:24] fuck is a lent? Okay. Other than stuff that's in your dryer. That's lent. Whatever. No, okay midwestern.

[00:04:32] Oh my god. FYI for those who are just now starting and haven't heard me complain about this before

[00:04:40] but people in the midwest can't tell the difference between e and i so they think that pin

[00:04:46] and pen are the same word. I mean, if you're in the midwest, you probably just thought I said

[00:04:52] the same word twice but I in fact didn't. So okay, anyway, lent not lent. Got it. Is the

[00:05:00] solemn Christian religious observant? Salam. Salam Christian. So I'm kind of bummed because

[00:05:07] I was like for some reason in my head, I thought it was something Jewish, but it's not it's very

[00:05:13] Christian because it commemorates the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert and enduring temptation

[00:05:21] by Satan. Oh yeah, which we're not there yet. So we're like who's a Jesus? There was this

[00:05:29] just prayer to him be executed? Yeah. Was it? Yeah. Okay. Or somewhere somewhere in that realm of

[00:05:35] time. Okay. And this was according to the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke but not John. Not

[00:05:41] John. Yeah. John did not believe in lent. I don't know. They were talking about lent. They were

[00:05:48] talking about the days that Jesus spent in the fucking desert. I just like give you a hard time. So

[00:05:53] that was the 40 days he spent before beginning his public ministry apparently. Oh yeah, okay.

[00:05:59] All right. I don't know about that. I didn't even know he really, I mean, I knew he had the

[00:06:03] sermon on the mound or whatever, right? But I don't know. I didn't know. I didn't know.

[00:06:07] I really did some miracles. Something about fishes and turning water into wine. Sure. And

[00:06:11] his mom was supposedly a virgin. But I don't know much about his quote unquote public ministry.

[00:06:16] I don't know anything about it. I did kind of know he was in the desert, but I didn't know

[00:06:21] that's where Lent came from. Yeah. Lent is usually observed in the Catholic Lutheran,

[00:06:27] Meravian, Anglican, United Protestant and Orthodox Christian to tradition among others.

[00:06:35] I was going to say in my experience I most relate Lent to Catholic. Yeah. At least where I grew up

[00:06:40] anyway. Sure. So some anabaptist, Baptist Methodist, reformed and non-denominational Christian

[00:06:47] churches also observed Lent. And I can say that I have seen it. I have seen some Methodists

[00:06:54] and some Baptists practice it. But yeah, I most often would, I guess at this point, put it with

[00:07:01] Catholic. Right. Right. Yeah. Not Jewish. At least from where we live in our perspective in the

[00:07:06] support portion of the world. Sure. Yeah. Sure. Which days are counted as being part of Lent?

[00:07:17] Oh no, what happened? Well, this is a special Patreon episode actually.

[00:07:23] Which means that they need to go to Patreon and subscribe as a patron in order to listen to it.

[00:07:30] Okay. Well, I guess that we are going to go do that now. Yeah. Just head over to patreon.com forward slash

[00:07:36] sacrilegist discourse. Become a member for as low as $2 a month and you'll have access to all

[00:07:41] these special things and goodies too. So, you know, go do that. So this was just a teaser. Yeah.

[00:07:47] Teaser. Just check in. Bye. Bye. Bye.
