Prayer of Azariah: Bible Study by Atheists

The Prayer of Azariah and Song of the Three Holy Children: More Apocryphal Adventures

In today's episode of Sacrilegious Discourse, Husband and Wife are back with more apocryphal shenanigans! After tackling the tale of Susanna and the Elders, they're now diving headfirst into the Prayer of Azariah and the Song of the Three Holy Children. Get ready for a fiery ride!

We kick things off by chatting about where these chapters come from—most Bibles don't have them, but the Greek Septuagint does. These passages were left out of the Hebrew and Aramaic texts but are a big deal for Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christians. The story drops us right into the fiery furnace scene from Daniel Chapter 3, where Azariah and his buddies are singing and praying while surrounded by flames.

As we break down the text, we dig into the historical and theological bits. Why all the praise for God when things look so grim? And what's up with the Greek stuff like Hades popping up? We also chat about how these passages reflect the socio-political vibes of the Babylonian exile.

From the endless praise to the miraculous divine save, we bring our usual mix of humor and skepticism to this ancient tale. Whether you're here for the theological deep dive or just some laughs, this episode has got you covered.

[00:00:00] Welcome to Sacrilegious Discourse.

[00:00:01] For this is what the Sovereign Lord says!

[00:00:03] Why do you need prophets to tell people who you are and what you want?

[00:00:07] If you can justify everything that the God of the Bible has done, then you can justify any of your behavior.

[00:00:14] A lot of this mentality is trickling into what is now mainstream right-wing Christianity.

[00:00:20] I am capable of empathy greater than this God of the Bible.

[00:00:26] This is a Bible that they tell kids. This is the good Lord. This is the good book.

[00:00:32] He is fantasizing about murder, mass murder.

[00:00:37] Head over to SacrilegiousDiscourse.com right now to find out how to leave us a review or support us on Patreon.

[00:00:48] Wife!

[00:00:49] Do you know what we're doing today?

[00:00:51] Well, yesterday we did Susanna, which is an apocryphal book of the Bible for some Bibles, not all.

[00:01:00] Right.

[00:01:00] Because apparently some Bibles actually do have that in there.

[00:01:04] And we're still kind of in this realm of Daniel where we're going over the sort of apocryphal books of said book.

[00:01:14] I guess.

[00:01:15] Yes.

[00:01:15] You know, is that about the gist of it?

[00:01:17] Kind of, yeah.

[00:01:17] Yeah.

[00:01:18] Okay.

[00:01:18] Yeah.

[00:01:18] And the last time we were early on in Daniel's life and he saved some woman's life by making sure that the people that tried to rape her got accused of the correct thing.

[00:01:29] And, and yeah.

[00:01:30] That she didn't get accused of sleeping with a guy.

[00:01:34] Right.

[00:01:34] That she didn't sleep with.

[00:01:35] Just because she wouldn't consent to being raped by these two letches.

[00:01:38] Right.

[00:01:39] Right.

[00:01:39] Yeah.

[00:01:40] So that was Susanna.

[00:01:41] And the elders.

[00:01:42] And the elders.

[00:01:44] Which means that today we're getting into a new chapter, which would be what?

[00:01:49] The Prayer of Azariah and Song of the Three Holy Children.

[00:01:54] That is a mouthful.

[00:01:56] Yeah.

[00:01:56] Okay.

[00:01:57] Most people just call it the Prayer of Azariah.

[00:02:00] The Prayer of Azariah.

[00:02:01] Okay.

[00:02:01] Are you ready to get into this?

[00:02:03] Sure as fuck am.

[00:02:04] All right.

[00:02:04] Let's do it.

[00:02:05] Okie dokie.

[00:02:12] All right.

[00:02:12] Well, like you said in the intro, we are still kind of in the book of Daniel.

[00:02:18] Right.

[00:02:18] And we are reading three chapters that were left out of most of the Bibles.

[00:02:24] They were not found in the Hebrew or Aramaic texts of the book of Daniel.

[00:02:31] Okay.

[00:02:31] But they were in the Septuagint, which is the Greek translation.

[00:02:36] Sure.

[00:02:37] And the three chapters are Susanna and the elders, which we read yesterday.

[00:02:42] Okay.

[00:02:42] And the Prayer of Azariah and Song of the Three Holy Children, which we're reading today.

[00:02:48] Yeah.

[00:02:49] And Bella and the Dragon, which we will be covering tomorrow.

[00:02:52] Okay.

[00:02:52] Okay.

[00:02:53] All right.

[00:02:54] This particular one, the Prayer of Azariah and the Song of the Three Holy Children would

[00:03:00] be found in Daniel chapter three.

[00:03:04] Okay.

[00:03:04] And it would be verses 24 through 90 in the Greek Septuagint.

[00:03:10] Okay.

[00:03:11] Okay.

[00:03:11] They were removed from Protestant canon within the, it falls within the fiery furnace episode

[00:03:19] when the three buddies of Daniel are tossed into the fire.

[00:03:24] Sure.

[00:03:24] Yeah.

[00:03:25] In some Greek Bibles, the Prayer and the Song do appear in an appendix to the Book of the Psalms.

[00:03:32] Okay.

[00:03:33] Okay.

[00:03:33] All right.

[00:03:34] The Prayer and accompanying song are not found in the Hebrew and Aramaic texts, which I already

[00:03:40] said, nor are they cited in any extant early Jewish writings.

[00:03:45] Got it.

[00:03:46] Okay.

[00:03:46] Yeah.

[00:03:47] It is accepted as canonical by Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christians, but rejected by most Protestants

[00:03:55] as being non-canonical.

[00:03:57] Okay.

[00:03:57] The origins of this particular story are obscure.

[00:04:01] Most modern scholars conclude that there was probably an original Semitic edition of

[00:04:07] this story somewhere.

[00:04:08] Got it.

[00:04:09] They just don't know the where and why for.

[00:04:13] Okay.

[00:04:13] The date of composition of this particular story is also uncertain, although most scholars

[00:04:20] favor a date either in the second or first century BCE.

[00:04:24] Okay.

[00:04:24] Okay.

[00:04:25] So, let us get over to that story now.

[00:04:30] Yeah.

[00:04:31] Okay.

[00:04:31] Azariah and, well, this particular translation that I'm reading is called Azariah and the

[00:04:40] Three Jews.

[00:04:41] Oh.

[00:04:41] Okay.

[00:04:42] Okay.

[00:04:42] But it is the same story.

[00:04:45] Got it.

[00:04:46] Okay.

[00:04:46] Um, they walked around to the, in the midst of the flames, singing hymns to God and blessing

[00:04:53] the Lord.

[00:04:54] Then Azariah stood still in the fire and prayed aloud.

[00:04:58] Blessed are you, O Lord, God of our ancestors and worthy of praise and glorious is your name

[00:05:05] forever.

[00:05:06] For you are just in all you have done.

[00:05:09] All your works are true and your ways right.

[00:05:12] And all your judgments are true.

[00:05:14] So they're just partying it up in the fire there.

[00:05:16] Yeah.

[00:05:16] That's what's going on here.

[00:05:17] Yes.

[00:05:18] Um, I don't know if you recall why they ended up in the fire in the first place.

[00:05:22] Well, they were, uh, they, uh, people were complaining that they were not, um, I kind

[00:05:30] of forget, I guess.

[00:05:31] But it was, there was, uh, there, there was a statue.

[00:05:34] Right.

[00:05:35] And everybody was supposed to worship the statue and pray to the statue and bow to the statue.

[00:05:40] And these guys were like, nah, but no.

[00:05:43] Right.

[00:05:44] And they were like, well, fuck you then.

[00:05:46] Sure.

[00:05:46] Get into that fire.

[00:05:48] Okay.

[00:05:48] That's right.

[00:05:48] And I knew it had something to do with them not following directions of the Babylonians

[00:05:53] or whatever.

[00:05:53] Right.

[00:05:54] Right.

[00:05:54] And therefore got thrown into the fire.

[00:05:56] And so they were like, we believe in God and our God and that, and he may not save us,

[00:06:04] but we know he can, if he so chooses.

[00:06:06] Sure.

[00:06:07] And so they went in willingly because they were like, it's in his hands, not ours.

[00:06:11] Yeah.

[00:06:12] All right.

[00:06:12] And so that happened.

[00:06:14] Okay.

[00:06:14] So they're in there singing it up now.

[00:06:16] Sure.

[00:06:17] You have executed true judgments and all you have brought upon us and upon Jerusalem,

[00:06:23] the holy city of our ancestors.

[00:06:25] By a true judgment, you have brought all this upon us because of our sins.

[00:06:29] For we have sinned and broken your law and turning away from you.

[00:06:34] Womp, womp.

[00:06:35] I hate it when we sin.

[00:06:37] Yeah.

[00:06:37] We're singing in the fire.

[00:06:39] La, la, la.

[00:06:40] We have sinned.

[00:06:41] But they've been saved by, like, they're extolling how their people have turned away from God

[00:06:47] and yet God is in the midst of saving them currently.

[00:06:50] Yes.

[00:06:51] Okay.

[00:06:51] Yes.

[00:06:52] All right.

[00:06:52] In all matters, we have sinned grievously.

[00:06:55] Hated it.

[00:06:56] We have not obeyed your commands.

[00:06:59] We have not kept them or done what you have commanded us for our own good.

[00:07:03] La, la, la.

[00:07:04] I love the fire.

[00:07:05] It's hot.

[00:07:06] La, la, la.

[00:07:07] Yeah.

[00:07:08] So, all that you have brought upon us and all that you have done to us, you have done

[00:07:12] by a true judgment.

[00:07:13] You have handed us over to our enemies, lawless and hateful rebels, and to an unjust king, the

[00:07:20] most wicked in all the world.

[00:07:22] Wow.

[00:07:22] That's funny because we know a wickeder king comes later.

[00:07:25] Yeah.

[00:07:26] And also, like, they did a lot to make this king, Nebuchadnezzar, seem like he was like,

[00:07:32] oh, this God is great.

[00:07:33] Mm-hmm.

[00:07:34] You know, they kind of said some nice things about him occasionally.

[00:07:37] Because he found God later.

[00:07:38] Right.

[00:07:39] In this book.

[00:07:40] Yeah.

[00:07:40] In this book.

[00:07:42] Yeah.

[00:07:42] That they are singing.

[00:07:44] Yeah.

[00:07:44] Interesting.

[00:07:45] Yeah.

[00:07:46] And now we cannot open our mouths, you know, because we're in the fucking fire.

[00:07:50] La, la, la.

[00:07:51] Sure.

[00:07:52] We, your servants who worship you, have become a shame and a reproach.

[00:07:56] For your namesake, do not give us up forever and do not annul your covenant.

[00:08:00] Do not withdraw your mercy from us for the sake of Abraham, your beloved, and for the

[00:08:06] sake of your servant Isaac and Israel, your holy one, to whom you promised to multiply

[00:08:12] their descendants like the stars of heaven and like the sand on the shore of the sea.

[00:08:17] Yeah.

[00:08:17] Indeed.

[00:08:18] He did promise those things.

[00:08:20] Yeah.

[00:08:20] The sands and the stars.

[00:08:22] Right.

[00:08:22] Yeah.

[00:08:22] For we, O Lord, have become fewer than any other nation.

[00:08:27] Oh.

[00:08:27] Yeah.

[00:08:28] They did.

[00:08:28] I mean, that's.

[00:08:29] They cut down.

[00:08:30] Right.

[00:08:30] Yeah.

[00:08:31] And are brought low this day in all the world because of our sins.

[00:08:35] And we're still dancing in the fire while we sing all this.

[00:08:38] Yeah, I guess.

[00:08:38] I mean, have they even been saved yet?

[00:08:39] Because the guys that brought, that threw them into the fire died as they were throwing

[00:08:43] them into the fire.

[00:08:44] Right.

[00:08:44] Because it was so hot.

[00:08:45] Seems like a long way of, you should be quicker about this.

[00:08:49] Right.

[00:08:49] Because you might be dead already.

[00:08:50] They're just like, la la la, we're still dancing in the fire.

[00:08:54] Right.

[00:08:54] Yeah.

[00:08:54] People dying because it's so fucking hot, but not us.

[00:08:57] Right.

[00:08:57] We're singing.

[00:08:58] Yeah.

[00:08:58] In our day, we have no ruler or prophet or leader, no burnt offering or sacrifice or

[00:09:04] oblation or incense, no place to make an offering before you and to find mercy.

[00:09:09] Yet with a contrite heart and a humble spirit, may we be accepted as though it were with burnt

[00:09:16] offerings of rams and bulls or with tens of thousands of fat lambs.

[00:09:22] Such may our sacrifice be in your sight today.

[00:09:25] And may we unreservedly follow you for no shame will come to those who trust in you.

[00:09:31] La la la, la la la, dancing in the fire.

[00:09:33] Right.

[00:09:34] They also mentioned like this timeframe is supposed to be around the beginning of the Babylonian

[00:09:40] exile, right?

[00:09:41] Mm-hmm.

[00:09:41] Ish.

[00:09:42] Thereabouts, right?

[00:09:43] The story.

[00:09:44] Yeah.

[00:09:44] Which is also in the same timeframe as Ezekiel.

[00:09:48] Mm-hmm.

[00:09:48] So, but they're saying that there's no prophets, but there seems to be prophets in that same

[00:09:52] timeframe.

[00:09:53] Interesting.

[00:09:54] Which, you know, that does not match.

[00:09:56] Right.

[00:09:57] Well, but the prophets that they wouldn't know these prophets that were in Jerusalem because

[00:10:06] they're in Babylon.

[00:10:07] Right.

[00:10:08] But Ezekiel was in Babylon also.

[00:10:10] Oh, he was.

[00:10:11] You're right.

[00:10:11] Sorry.

[00:10:12] My bad.

[00:10:12] So that's why I was like, this doesn't make sense.

[00:10:13] Yeah.

[00:10:14] You're right.

[00:10:14] You're right.

[00:10:15] And now with all our heart, we follow you, you know, God.

[00:10:18] Mm-hmm.

[00:10:19] Yeah.

[00:10:19] Yeah.

[00:10:20] We fear you and seek your presence.

[00:10:22] Do not put us to shame, but deal with us in your patience and in your abundant mercy.

[00:10:28] Deliver us in accord with your marvelous works and bring glory to your name, O Lord.

[00:10:33] La, la, la.

[00:10:34] Dancing in the fire.

[00:10:35] That's a good prayer.

[00:10:36] That's what he really cares about, bringing glory to his name.

[00:10:38] Yeah.

[00:10:39] Like, your name is awesome.

[00:10:40] I fucking love your name.

[00:10:42] It's pretty.

[00:10:43] Could you please save me?

[00:10:45] Let all who do harm to your servants be put to shame.

[00:10:48] Let them be disgraced and deprived of all power, and let their strength be broken.

[00:10:54] Let them know that you alone are the Lord God, glorious over the whole world.

[00:11:00] Now the king's servant, who threw them in, kept stoking the furnace with naphtha, pitch,

[00:11:06] toe, and brushwood.

[00:11:09] Okay.

[00:11:09] But they just, they said in the other chapter that anybody that got near the flame died.

[00:11:15] Yep.

[00:11:16] So how was he doing that?

[00:11:17] I don't know.

[00:11:18] Okay.

[00:11:18] From afar.

[00:11:19] Got it.

[00:11:20] They're throwing it real far.

[00:11:21] They're throwing it like a, willy nilly, hail Mary.

[00:11:23] Like a fire-stoking catapult or something?

[00:11:24] Yeah, they got long pole sticks.

[00:11:26] Okay.

[00:11:27] Cattle prods.

[00:11:27] There you go.

[00:11:28] Yeah.

[00:11:29] And the flames poured out above the furnace, 49 cubits.

[00:11:33] Damn.

[00:11:34] And spread out and burned those Chaldeans who were caught near the furnace.

[00:11:37] Mm.

[00:11:38] See?

[00:11:38] Okay.

[00:11:38] Okay.

[00:11:39] But the angel of the Lord came down into the furnace to be with Azariah and his companions

[00:11:44] and drove the fiery flame out of the furnace and made the inside of the furnace as though

[00:11:51] a moist wind were whistling through it.

[00:11:54] Oh.

[00:11:54] So maybe the reason that the people outside got burned was because of this angel.

[00:11:58] They put the fire on the outside.

[00:12:01] Right.

[00:12:01] Yeah.

[00:12:01] Okay.

[00:12:02] And remember later the king was like, what?

[00:12:06] I thought you only put three kids in there.

[00:12:08] Yeah.

[00:12:08] And they were like, yeah.

[00:12:10] And he's like, but I see four people.

[00:12:12] One's all shiny.

[00:12:14] What?

[00:12:14] Yeah.

[00:12:15] That's this angel guy.

[00:12:16] That was a long prayer to get to the point where they got saved by the angel.

[00:12:19] Right?

[00:12:20] You know?

[00:12:20] The fire did not touch them at all and caused them no pain or distress.

[00:12:24] La la la, la la, dancing in the fire.

[00:12:26] Yeah.

[00:12:27] Then the three with one voice praised and glorified and blessed God in the furnace.

[00:12:33] Blessed are you, O Lord, God of our ancestors, and to be praised and highly exalted forever.

[00:12:40] And blessed is your glorious holy name and to be highly praised and highly exalted forever.

[00:12:48] Mm-hmm.

[00:12:49] Blessed are you and the temple of your holy glory and to be extolled and highly glorified forever.

[00:12:57] Highly glorified.

[00:12:58] Highly, highly, highly.

[00:12:59] It's so fucking hot.

[00:13:01] Yeah.

[00:13:01] Highly.

[00:13:01] La la la.

[00:13:02] This God is like the best God of all the gods.

[00:13:04] You're the best.

[00:13:05] He's the best God, he got, God, God there is.

[00:13:07] God, he got, he got, God, God.

[00:13:09] Yeah.

[00:13:09] Blessed are you who look into the depths from your throne on the cherubim and to be praised and highly exalted forever.

[00:13:17] Blessed are you on the throne of your kingdom and to be extolled and highly exalted forever.

[00:13:22] Holy shit, this is a lot of fucking praise.

[00:13:24] Blessed are you in the firmament of heaven and to be sung and glorified forever.

[00:13:29] Good God.

[00:13:30] La la la, la la la, dancing in the fire.

[00:13:33] Do you like my little additions?

[00:13:35] I keep adding between each verse.

[00:13:36] Yeah.

[00:13:37] Bless the Lord, all the works, all you works of the Lord.

[00:13:42] Sing praise to him and highly exalt him forever.

[00:13:45] Bless the Lord, you heavens.

[00:13:47] Sing praise to him and highly exalt him forever.

[00:13:50] Oh my God.

[00:13:51] All the forever of forever.

[00:13:53] Right?

[00:13:53] Ever.

[00:13:53] This is insane.

[00:13:54] Bless the Lord, you angels of the Lord.

[00:13:57] Sing praise to him and highly exalt him forever.

[00:14:01] Bless the Lord, all you waters above the heavens.

[00:14:04] Sing praise to him and highly exalt him forever.

[00:14:07] Bless the Lord, all you powers of the Lord.

[00:14:10] Sing praise to him and highly exalt him forever.

[00:14:13] All you powers of the Lord?

[00:14:15] Lord, exalt the Lord because the Lord is the Lord and Lord, Lordy Lord Lord.

[00:14:21] My God.

[00:14:22] Dancing in the fire.

[00:14:23] Right? Yeah.

[00:18:05] hades that's some greek shit right there like what the fuck yeah uh saved us from the power of death

[00:18:12] and delivered us from the midst of the burning fiery furnace from the midst of the fire he has

[00:18:18] delivered us give thanks to the lord for he is good for his mercy endures forever all who worship

[00:18:26] the lord bless the god of gods sing praise to him and give thanks to him for his mercy endures or

[00:18:32] fucking ever the end holy shit that was just i see why it was maybe go at the end of like

[00:18:41] what you said psalms or something like that is where it was yeah placed in some places yeah i mean

[00:18:46] it's okay i guess it's kind of like poetic ish because of the forever over and over and over

[00:18:52] again and the highly exalted and the whatever but man we've talked about this with the books

[00:18:58] daniel before but there is a lot of extra praise yeah um pointed at this god of theirs god god god

[00:19:07] he's so great it's almost sickening the amount of like everybody loves that they're trying to

[00:19:12] like yeah produce for him right yeah and given the time frame because this is like about it's in the 200

[00:19:18] bce time frames which they were rebuilding jerusalem in like 165 after they got rid of uh what's his face

[00:19:25] uh and oh epiphanies yeah antiochus epiphanies right yeah so i feel like this was them like yay we

[00:19:33] better praise our god more because we got our place back and we're gonna keep them forever ever

[00:19:39] and and there's just all this like extra praise happening to like make sure they solidify their

[00:19:45] god's place right yeah and it's really really hard to to stomach it really is i'm like guys have you read

[00:19:54] your own book because right your god's kind of a dick he's very much a dick really he kind of sent

[00:19:59] you to where you were anyway and then you had to figure out a way to get your your your place back

[00:20:05] right so i don't know that he deserves this much praise but you know uh whatever i'm glad you didn't

[00:20:12] burn up in the fire i yeah well this passage if you break it down like story wise yeah it it normally

[00:20:19] has three main components is how they break it down when they're doing like literary analysis of it

[00:20:26] okay the first part is the penitential prayer of daniel's friend azariah while the three youths

[00:20:31] were in the fiery furnace so he's like hey yo hey yo we're in the fire yeah and the second component

[00:20:38] is like the two sentences a brief account of a radiant figure who met them in the furnace yet who

[00:20:43] was unburned right right i mean that was so brief sure right the third component is that long ass ending

[00:20:50] the hymn of praise that they sang when they realized their deliverance got it the hymn includes

[00:20:57] the refrain praise and exalt him above all forever repeated many many times each naming a feature of

[00:21:04] the world right and i recall yeah i just read it yeah and yeah so it's like why some of the faiths

[00:21:14] include this as extracurricular activity that they approve of and why even some do consider it

[00:21:21] canonical because it is so um not just in it's not just not in disagreement with the rest right it

[00:21:31] actually is more hand in hand with what they would like you to be now i do there is some questions i

[00:21:38] would have with regard to the you know the the writing this because they brought up hades yeah that was

[00:21:42] my first question and and yes there is talk in the bible of god creating all the heavens and the earth

[00:21:50] and all this kind of stuff but the specific thing like having the the stars and the dew and the all

[00:21:56] the natural the sun and the moon give thanks as entities that exist yes to this god yeah we haven't

[00:22:04] done that in a while things feel a little bit more pagan in idea than than some of the other ideas

[00:22:09] that we've read about in the bible somewhat yeah now now i think earlier on they were more they were

[00:22:15] closer to that but like this was in in the later books that we've read this is as close as we've gotten

[00:22:21] to it and yeah those in this time frame it kind of you can see why it's accepted by some but you can

[00:22:27] also see why others are like oh absolutely not right right get that stuff out of here this is not okay

[00:22:34] yeah yeah so that makes it kind of interesting where you can see both sides sure definitely but uh so

[00:22:41] that was uh what was this one called again azariah and the pray song the pray pray song thing wow that

[00:22:50] was very specific uh the prayer of azariah and song of the three holy children okay or as it's called

[00:22:57] in the translation that i read yeah um let me scroll back up to the top here and the three jews uh

[00:23:05] azariah and the three oh azariah and the three jews okay got it um so that's the end of this one

[00:23:11] and we'll be back tomorrow with bell and the dragon awesome all right and then that will finish us up

[00:23:17] with the apocryphal books of daniel correct yes it will once we finish tomorrow's yep all right

[00:23:22] well we will see you guys then bye
