Brace yourselves for another round of holy roasting with our take on Ezekiel Chapter 15, where the Almighty apparently moonlights as a critic of arboreal usefulness. If you thought your self-esteem could handle ancient tough love, this episode will put that to the test. Get ready to explore the divine art of belittling vine wood and, by extension, the entire city of Jerusalem—because, let's face it, nothing says 'compassion' like comparing your creations to kindling. Join us as we dissect this biblical bonfire and offer some secular salvation from the scripture's self-worth smackdown. Spoiler alert: you don't need to be a charred vine to find value in yourself.

[00:02:52] I'm husband and I'm wife together. We're reading the Bible for the very first time
[00:02:56] We grew up without religion and wanted to know what all the fuss was about well
[00:03:01] What have we learned so far that God is a dick and apparently some people believe in talking donkeys
[00:03:06] We're not trying to pass ourselves off as experts. Nope
[00:03:09] We're just reading the Bible for the first time and given our first take reaction
[00:03:13] If you'd like to join us in this venture you might consider starting that episode one otherwise jump in wherever you like
[00:03:19] All right, let's go read the Bible. Yeah, let's get to it
[00:03:23] I
[00:03:26] Wife do you remember what happened yesterday?
[00:03:29] Well yesterday was Ezekiel chapter 14 sure fuck was and in that chapter
[00:03:37] God was
[00:03:39] basically
[00:03:40] Dreaming about all the different ways that he could kill Israelites and in that episode husband was responding to all those ways with every
[00:03:50] Fiber of anger in his being I really was because it it's
[00:03:57] People read this book and they say their God is good. They say their God is the righteous
[00:04:05] correct
[00:04:07] Version of what humanity should be right this God this this God the God that they worship is
[00:04:16] literally
[00:04:18] Dreaming
[00:04:20] Listing off ways in which he might kill
[00:04:25] mass amounts of people and specifically
[00:04:28] He's fine with killing off kids right specifically says that yeah and animals. He's very excited about that
[00:04:36] And he's like let's do this thing. Yeah, I I'm not okay with a God that thinks that
[00:04:43] Planning mass murder is a
[00:04:46] Viable pastime
[00:04:48] I just have the same it just doesn't work for me at all. I can't imagine why not right now. Yeah
[00:04:57] So to change change subjects here for just a moment
[00:05:01] We're gonna go something better here for just just a minute here
[00:05:05] I want to we are doing that we're in the midst of our
[00:05:08] Patreon drive right now. Yes, we are and we are trying to get to a $400 a month
[00:05:13] Level where it'll allow us to do a lot of things that we need to do for our podcast and we have had
[00:05:19] Definitely some responses to it
[00:05:20] So we really appreciate everybody that has come out to support us and today
[00:05:24] We specifically want to call somebody who's just got through their free trial and they have stayed on as a patron
[00:05:30] so thank you Bridget, thank you Bridget Bridget signed up for patreon and
[00:05:37] Wanted to let us know that they really enjoy the as a moth book club
[00:05:41] Which I thought I'd bring up because I think at some point soon. We're looking to get back to that
[00:05:47] We are we are headed towards the end of our Jewish folklore. Yeah, and
[00:05:53] Part of the reason that we quit the
[00:05:56] As a month thing was cuz he was a sexist schmuck
[00:05:59] But also because we were starting to catch up to where we were at in the Bible to be fair
[00:06:06] He's also dead, right? So I mean there's that there is just saying right but it just seemed like a good idea to take a pause
[00:06:14] Yeah, but yeah, we will be pulling him back off the shelf and you know dusting them off and
[00:06:21] Probably preface seeing each episode that we do with him
[00:06:25] That he's a sexist dead schmuck, but the the books themselves have a lot of good reference
[00:06:32] You know they're great material
[00:06:35] We said before there's no need to throw out the baby with the bath water, right?
[00:06:39] Right not to get off on a tangent here about Isaac as I'm off a book club, but
[00:06:45] This was more about thank you Bridget
[00:06:47] Thank you so much Bridget and thank you for voicing what you would like to hear more of yeah, and
[00:06:54] just you know
[00:06:56] we appreciate you and we love hearing from you and
[00:07:00] Everybody can't wait to keep hearing from you
[00:07:02] Yeah, and we love that you love us so we definitely love our fans and we love doing this for you
[00:07:09] It is our pleasure and you helping us do what we do just absolutely makes our day
[00:07:15] It does it and it floors us every time right get to say something like this. Yes, it does
[00:07:21] That being said are you ready to get into Ezekiel chapter 15? Yes? I am all right. Let's do this okie-dokie
[00:07:30] Alright
[00:07:39] We are gonna jump into
[00:07:41] Ezekiel chapter 15. All right Ezekiel chapter 15. Let's see what easy K got to say to us today
[00:07:48] Let's do it the word of the Lord came to me again. Yeah, oh every fucking yeah, it's every chapter
[00:07:55] All right, so this is God talking now. Yeah, okay son of man
[00:07:59] Yeah, I'm your human your worm. How is the wood of a vine different from that of a branch from
[00:08:07] any of the trees in the forest
[00:08:12] I'm not sure how much wood would a woodchuck woodchuck wood. I mean it's it's pliable right like you can
[00:08:20] Yeah, you can bend it. It's bendy like a bendy strong swing on it like Tarzan. Oh, right?
[00:08:24] Yeah, okay, so it's strong. It is strong with sore trees
[00:08:27] So that's true different and I would say I would definitely trust a tree a lot more than a vine
[00:08:33] Yeah, definitely just saying you know I would not swing on either. I have swung on a tree vine before
[00:08:40] I believe you and it was it was really fun. I bet it was for you
[00:08:43] It was yeah, so is wood ever taken from it to make anything useful?
[00:08:49] I don't know a swing a swing. Okay, but it's like it's not taken great finds
[00:08:54] I think is what they're talking about there
[00:08:57] Do they make pegs from it to hang things on?
[00:09:00] I'm gonna go with no probably and
[00:09:02] After it is thrown on the fire as fuel and the fire burns both ends and charge the middle
[00:09:07] Is it then useful for anything? It's charred
[00:09:12] So is it no probably not yeah
[00:09:14] If it was not useful for anything when it was whole how much less
[00:09:19] Can it be made into something useful when the fire has burned it and it is charred?
[00:09:27] Oh my god
[00:09:29] So easy easy literally going you see how useless you fucks are you're so useless that when I char you
[00:09:36] You're gonna be that much more useless
[00:09:39] For fuck's sake I'm going to destroy the fuck out of you. You are so worthless
[00:09:46] You are garbage you are trash and now I'm gonna burn you like yesterday's
[00:09:53] Fish sandwich did they just they love
[00:09:57] Telling these people how much they see the god
[00:10:00] Apparently whatever who whoever the fuck wrote this whatever the fuck this is yeah
[00:10:05] Love telling other human beings how much they fucking suck and how hard and how bad and how much
[00:10:12] They're gonna die, but you know what really really sucks about this is not just that the person that wrote this yeah
[00:10:21] loves telling them how much they suck what really is
[00:10:24] Sad about this is how much the people on the receiving end
[00:10:29] love
[00:10:30] And and swallow that message like they internalize I do suck but okay
[00:10:37] Let me I I'm gonna push back on it just a little bit because like I feel like
[00:10:42] When I have been to church right and you're sitting there listening to the pastor or preacher or whoever
[00:10:48] Talked to you about whatever you're learning that day, right? It's usually some
[00:10:53] Message that they have deemed appropriate to share with the the group right the congregation congregation. Yeah
[00:11:00] And and there's usually a message in it that they will they will teach you what that message is after they get done reading the section, right?
[00:11:08] so
[00:11:09] Most people that I have ever known it feels like they don't really even listen to
[00:11:15] The part that the that's written that's read about the Bible, right?
[00:11:18] They just want the lesson they want the lesson part
[00:11:20] Yeah, they want the part that their pastor or preacher or whatever
[00:11:23] Tells them at the end and says this is what you're supposed to take from that. Yeah, you know
[00:11:28] Yeah, and so by doing so it
[00:11:32] It allows everybody who is going to church to cherry pick right whatever their pastor or preacher
[00:11:38] Whatever person tells them that is what the the gospel is, you know, I was referring more to
[00:11:45] The fact that when this was first all put together
[00:11:50] Like the people that were listening to this were like
[00:11:54] We do suck we are mere humans. We are worms. Oh, okay. You know what I mean? Yeah, and
[00:12:00] God is great and we are trash
[00:12:02] Okay, and it's like I'm sad that you really feel that way about yourself like
[00:12:07] So if esteem is hard, you know self love
[00:12:11] Finding a way to be happy in your own skin, right?
[00:12:14] finding a way to reconcile your flaws with your hopes and dreams and your
[00:12:21] Regrets and your your
[00:12:24] Wishes to be a better person and all that right right hard to find that middle ground and and
[00:12:30] Just take care of you. Yeah, and this is like you shouldn't cuz you suck. Yeah, and it's like ouch
[00:12:38] Right like this if I had grown up with this kind of message
[00:12:43] like
[00:12:45] Trigger warning here because I'm about to say something like dark and deep but
[00:12:50] Because of my mental health issues and the deep
[00:12:54] depressions that I have suffered prior to medication if I had grown up listening to this kind of thing I
[00:13:02] Probably would not be here today
[00:13:05] right is
[00:13:06] What I'm getting grew up with somebody telling you that this is how you should feel about right?
[00:13:11] Yeah, that's what I mean that you just are that this is the way it's supposed to be right right because the way
[00:13:17] The way that I am as a reader
[00:13:19] I would internalize this I would take this message to heart because I know that because that's how I am with
[00:13:27] everything that I get into you know with every
[00:13:31] Message that I'm like, okay. I want to really understand what I'm reading
[00:13:35] So I'm gonna read this hard and close. Yeah, and I'm gonna reflect on it
[00:13:39] Like that's just who I am right so I know
[00:13:41] That if I grew up reading this and this was the message that I was receiving all the time
[00:13:47] I would probably not be here today and that makes me
[00:13:50] So sad and it makes me wonder like how many people internalize this message sure
[00:13:55] I'm here to tell you you don't suck y'all right right. Yeah. All right. Sorry way off topic
[00:14:03] Therefore therefore this is what the sovereign Lord says
[00:14:07] Okay, okay. Yeah as I have given the wood of the vine
[00:14:12] Among the trees of the forest as fuel for the fire
[00:14:16] So will I treat the people living in Jerusalem? You know, you're a fucking worthless mind. Yeah
[00:14:22] I'm gonna burn your shit right. I will set my face against them. He repeats. Okay
[00:14:29] Although they have come out of the fire the fire will yet consume them
[00:14:34] And when I set my face against them, you will know that my name is the Lord
[00:14:40] I am the Lord. I will make the land desolate because they have been unfaithful declares the sovereign Lord
[00:14:47] Okay, the end. Oh, that's the end
[00:14:51] Looks so tired and put out well. No, I mean I'm I
[00:14:56] Knew that we were in for a little bit of a problem
[00:14:59] I assumed we were in for a little bit of a follow-up after that last chapter, right?
[00:15:03] Yeah, and that last chapter was so terrible. Yeah that
[00:15:08] This this was a bad chapter. I mean, you know, like, you know, there's he's talking about killing Jerusalem again, right?
[00:15:13] And
[00:15:15] It's not it's not a fun conversation, but it pales in comparison to the the
[00:15:22] the
[00:15:23] Conversation he was having about how to kill all the people in the last chapter, right?
[00:15:28] So I guess I'm just a little bit like okay here. God's God's doing it again
[00:15:35] He's got a hate on for you some more
[00:15:37] Yes, I could go off and get very angry again, and I am very angry, but it's it would be the same words
[00:15:43] It would be the same thing tonight. You're just tired. I am a little bit tired tonight too
[00:15:47] So I if I sound a little bit like kind of off. I apologize guys. No, I don't know
[00:15:52] I've had a long day. So I don't feel like you're tired in general. That's not what I meant
[00:15:56] And I mean you are I work hard. You can see my face. Yeah. Yeah, you got the hang dog
[00:16:02] But mostly I just meant that like this message is we're reading this every fucking day
[00:16:08] Yeah, it's wearing to be to try to remember. This is not directed at us. No, we're fine
[00:16:15] We don't suck well, you know and no and it but it also
[00:16:20] disturbs me personally a little bit because
[00:16:23] I'm not able to get as worked up as I want to be about the things that are terrible in here sometimes
[00:16:29] Right because we just finished talking about a fever dream of killing
[00:16:34] Multitudes of people multiple different ways in the last chapter, right? Like that's fucking horrible
[00:16:39] The shock value is wearing off because there's so much that's shocking or tragic or
[00:16:45] horrendous that like if we got mad and worked up and yelled and hollered and
[00:16:52] Just went off every single time like we would it would be it would get old probably, you know
[00:16:57] Like I mean it would
[00:16:59] People would say well, you can't get that angry about it all that I mean like how do you get why are you guys angry every single episode?
[00:17:05] Like well because God's kind of a dick every single episode guys. Yeah, you know, I mean he just is he's he's terrible
[00:17:11] He's fucking horrible. It's like asking a person who's being abused by their spouse
[00:17:17] Why are you always so mad at that person?
[00:17:20] Like well, you're right today. I didn't get punched in the eye today
[00:17:26] I merely got called a worthless piece of shit. So you're right. Yeah, you know comparatively speaking
[00:17:33] I suppose I should be happy and grateful question mark
[00:17:38] Like that's what this feels like it feels like it's trying to
[00:17:43] Wear you down so that you accept abuse
[00:17:46] Well, I mean I think ultimately that's part of it
[00:17:48] You're supposed to fear and grovel before God and then worship him and without question and you know
[00:17:56] There is definitely an element of
[00:17:58] Being subservient and beneath God, right?
[00:18:01] I mean like even in the wording they use by calling them son of man and things like that, right?
[00:18:06] Which literally does translate to mere human, right? Yeah
[00:18:10] I mean the whole thing is about subservience to God, right and
[00:18:15] And just accepting your role and being less than and it's just a terrible fucking message
[00:18:21] Right. It's a terrible message even just at the the highest levels of it with regard to how you should view yourself worth
[00:18:28] well
[00:18:29] That makes is with the fact that you're supposed to accept that
[00:18:33] You are quote-unquote born a sinner, you know, you come into this world
[00:18:38] Not deserving you are already a piece of shit even before you've taken your first I rail against that concept
[00:18:45] I mean that is not that's not okay. No, not at all
[00:18:48] Yeah, like we all have a chance in this life to be the best person that we can be and
[00:18:55] right, you know to to have grace if you will like to steal a
[00:19:02] Religious word but to use it
[00:19:05] I think more effectively to extend grace to ourselves and to each other, right? Yeah, I agree
[00:19:12] Well, so that was Ezekiel chapter 15
[00:19:15] Shers fuck was which means that tomorrow is Saturday and we will be back with
[00:19:23] a
[00:19:24] Saturday and then on Sunday will be doing a
[00:19:28] And then I will get the weekly wrap up out and we will be back on Monday with a
[00:19:34] Ezekiel chapter 16. All right, we'll see you then
