Isaiah Chapter 16: Bible Study for Atheists

Isaiah Chapter 16: Bible Study for Atheists

Get ready to buckle up, because we're about to navigate the turbulent terrain of biblical baloney in this hilariously enlightening episode! We're decoding the infamous Book of Isaiah and oh boy, does it get weird. Ever wondered about the oppression of the Moabites, or why the hell a raisin cake from Kier Herseth is a big deal? Yeah, we didn't either, but trust us, it's a wild ride.

We're wrestling with the biblical prophecy conundrum, attempting to connect the dots between Isaiah's gloom-and-doom predictions and the guy named Jesus who supposedly fits the bill. Spoiler alert: the connections are as loose as a dollar store jigsaw puzzle.

As we venture into the second half of the episode, we pull out our historical spectacles for a closer examination of the Good Book. Violence? Check. Suffering as a land claim prerequisite? Double-check. Making sense in the modern world? Err, not so much.

We're fearlessly questioning the Bible's validity as a guidebook and arguing for its relegation to the dusty shelves of history. Fair warning: this episode is laden with a healthy dose of skepticism, a sprinkle of irreverence, and a boatload of laughter. So if you're ready to view the biblical narratives from a fresh, non-believer's perspective, join us on this irreverent romp through religious history! Just remember, laughter is the best blasphemy.

00:00 - Wife (Host)
Husband Wife. Do you know what we're reading today and how we got here and what happened?

00:06 - Husband (Host)
Well, we are in the midst of reading Isaiah and we just finished off a week last week and I know so far Isaiah is going over a lot of prophecies about the destruction of Israel. We had a song that got sung at one point and I don't agree with Isaiah a lot because he's kind of a dick and God's a dick and there's a lot of dickishness going on.

00:28 - Wife (Host)
Right, yeah.

00:29 - Husband (Host)
Generally the gist of what's justing.

00:32 - Wife (Host)
Pretty much, yeah, okay, I think you got it.

00:34 - Husband (Host)
Awesome. So I think we left off last week with Isaiah, chapter 15.

00:40 - Wife (Host)
Sure as fuck did.

00:41 - Husband (Host)
And that means that today we're gonna be getting into.

00:44 - Wife (Host)
Isaiah, chapter 16.

00:46 - Husband (Host)
Let's do this.

00:47 - Wife (Host)
Okie dokie, okay, okay. So Isaiah, chapter 16 seems to be a continuation from 15, where he was going off on Moab.

01:09 - Husband (Host)
Okay, okay.

01:11 - Wife (Host)
So God was like fuck Moab, fuck all them guys.

01:15 - Husband (Host)
I mean there's a lot of that going on, yeah but 15 was about that Moab specific. Right right.

01:22 - Wife (Host)
So he's still like blah, blah, blah, moab is gonna get it.

01:26 - Husband (Host)
Got it Okay.

01:28 - Wife (Host)
So I'm just letting you know, because it starts out with send lambs as tribute to the ruler of the land, from Sila across the desert to the Mount of Daughter Zion. So he's just like middle of this thought, right.

01:42 - Husband (Host)
Sure.

01:43 - Wife (Host)
Like fluttering birds pushed from the nest. So are the women of Moab at the Fords of the Arnon. Make up your mind. Moab says Render a decision. Make your shadow like night at high noon. Hide the fugitives. Do not betray the refugees. Let the Moabite fugitives stay with you. Be their shelter from the destroyer.

02:08 - Husband (Host)
Wait what.

02:09 - Wife (Host)
I have no idea.

02:10 - Husband (Host)
So, god, who's the destroyer? The destroyer is God, isn't it?

02:14 - Wife (Host)
I mean, Isn't that what I was?

02:17 - Husband (Host)
understanding prior to this. And so now, what people are? Is it the Moabites that are sheltering people from God to try to keep him from destroying them, or I'm really confused here. I thought God was being a dick and killing everybody.

02:34 - Wife (Host)
That's what it seems like to me. But, that's what I'm saying, like he's still fucking with the Moabites, but I don't understand.

02:42 - Husband (Host)
I don't understand who's sheltering who and why they're sheltering them exactly, and like somebody's pushing women from nests and trees and killing them.

02:50 - Wife (Host)
So something's not good. Something is not good and the Moabites are getting it.

02:56 - Husband (Host)
Right In a bad way. I'm gathering that bit.

02:59 - Wife (Host)
But I don't know who's speaking to whom.

03:00 - Husband (Host)
Right, it's confusing.

03:02 - Wife (Host)
It is the oppressor will come to an end and destruction will cease.

03:07 - Husband (Host)
Okay.

03:08 - Wife (Host)
The aggressor will vanish from the land.

03:11 - Husband (Host)
Okay.

03:13 - Wife (Host)
In love. A throne will be established In faithfulness. A man will sit on it, one from the house of David, one who, in judging, seeks justice and speeds the cause of righteousness.

03:29 - Husband (Host)
God, and this is who they think Jesus is probably.

03:31 - Wife (Host)
This is who Christians think Jesus is. Christians think Jesus is yeah, Right, but Jewish people are like but no, it's not though.

03:38 - Husband (Host)
Right, cause we were just talking about killing Moabites. Yeah, and how people like I don't understand how Christians get from Moabites to Jesus.

03:46 - Wife (Host)
Because they're saying that a man is gonna. No, I get, there's gonna be a throne.

03:53 - Husband (Host)
I understand that, but like they're talking about immediate things and then it transitions to some person from David's line that's gonna sit on the throne Right, which most people, if you weren't thousands of years past this already.

04:09 - Wife (Host)
Right.

04:10 - Husband (Host)
And they're like I don't know who they'd be talking about as soon.

04:13 - Wife (Host)
Yeah, but they're like sometimes we're talking about today, sometimes we're talking about tomorrow, and sometimes we're talking about in a thousand years, and it could all be in the same sentence, and it just depends on what we want it to mean.

04:24 - Husband (Host)
It just seems to me like Christians got past. The uncomfortable point of this isn't about the immediate and they're like I don't know who they'd be talking about, other than, well, I mean Jesus, obviously. Yeah, so you know, like they got past that there's nobody else that they could point to.

04:40
So they're like well, Jesus, that's Jesus, Because we have to make it. We have to make it make. This is the. This is the shit that I hate. They have to make it make sense. Mm-hmm. Why do we have to have it make sense? It's a goddamn prophecy. What if it's just fucking wrong?

04:56 - Wife (Host)
or what if the prophecy Wasn't about Jesus?

04:59 - Husband (Host)
Yeah, yeah, but I mean, but seriously, but why does it have to be right? Sure, it doesn't look. There's nothing that says a prophecy has to be right. In fact, I would say most prophecies are by nature wrong.

05:11 - Wife (Host)
You're. You're not wrong. We have heard of Moab's pride. How great is her arrogance of her conceit, her pride and her insolence, but her boasts are empty.

05:25 - Husband (Host)
Okay, so now, now we're back to the Moabites after okay.

05:29 - Wife (Host)
Yeah.

05:30 - Husband (Host)
Again, that's lends to the immediacy of the prophecy right thousand-year.

05:36 - Wife (Host)
Jesus II guy right right no, I agree. Therefore, the Moabites wail. They wail together for Moab Lament and grieve for the raisin cakes of Kier Herseth.

05:49 - Husband (Host)
I mean I'll take some raisin cakes anybody. Anybody have a good recipe for some raisin cakes? I mean I wonder what a raisin cake is. We should do like a Bible cooking show.

06:02 - Wife (Host)
Because, honestly, I mean, it's got to be pretty, pretty famous food here if they're lamenting and grieving for it. Yeah like somebody was making some good shit.

06:11 - Husband (Host)
I mean into the Bible. I like some raisins, you know.

06:14 - Wife (Host)
I like raisins and I like cake.

06:16 - Husband (Host)
I like carrot cake. I'm curious when I like raisin. I would try some raisin cake.

06:20 - Wife (Host)
Especially if people were lamenting and grieving for it right, yeah.

06:25 - Husband (Host)
Must be some good raisin cake.

06:26 - Wife (Host)
Mm-hmm. The fields of heshbon wither the vines of Sibma also. The rulers of the nations have trampled down the choicest lines which once reached Jayzere and spread toward the desert. I see, I see their shoots spread out and went as far as the sea. I. Guess that's a wow. I don't.

06:51 - Husband (Host)
I don't really know from the desert to the desert, to the sea.

06:56 - Wife (Host)
From the desert to the sea that's a long way.

06:59 - Husband (Host)
I see that. Yeah, you see the sea.

07:01 - Wife (Host)
Mm-hmm. So I weep, as Jayzere weeps for the vines of Sibma, heshbon and Elialah. I drench you with tears. That's what happened to Alice.

07:14 - Husband (Host)
Is it?

07:15 - Wife (Host)
in Wonderland. She cried so many tears. Okay, everybody was drowning in them.

07:20 - Husband (Host)
Oh, when she was big. Yeah, yeah, remember, right, yeah, yeah.

07:24 - Wife (Host)
The shouts of joy over your ripened fruit and over your harvest have been stilled. Well, yeah, because you've been crying.

07:32 - Husband (Host)
Right.

07:33 - Wife (Host)
Well, so cheering, and then you started crying.

07:35 - Husband (Host)
There's the, the Israelites, or God or somebody was trampling all over them too, so get those lines right tear them up.

07:43 - Wife (Host)
Joy and gladness are taken away from the orchard. No one sings or shouts in the vineyards. No one treads out wine at the presses. For I have put an end to the shouting.

07:55 - Husband (Host)
I being God, I'm assuming I have no idea, because Isaiah is still prophesizing. I'm assuming here, think so with regard to speaking for God right?

08:05 - Wife (Host)
I think so, because he's saying I have put an end to the shouting and then goes on to say my heart laments for Moab. I did a meanness to you and my heart laments for it that I did that Magnanimous thing to say at what?

08:18
my heart laments for Moab like a harp, my inmost being for Kierre Hereseth when Moab appears at her high place. She only wears herself out when she goes to her shrine to pray. It is to no avail. This is the word the Lord has already spoken concerning Moab. But now the Lord says Quote within three years, as a servant bound by contract would count them. Moab splendor and all her many people will be Despised and her survivors will be very few and feeble. The end.

08:55 - Husband (Host)
So, okay, okay, so it sounds like we're enslaving the Moabites ruining them completely, but we also lament for them, sure, and maybe, I guess, god limit.

09:12 - Wife (Host)
It's the way a parent laments when they spank their child.

09:16 - Husband (Host)
This doesn't sound like an apparent parental anything. This sounds like a murderous asshole, yeah, on a goddamn killing spree. And then he's like, oh, by the way, yeah, I also care about you, so whatever.

09:27 - Wife (Host)
Yeah, moving along. Sad about your wine. Yeah, dried up.

09:31 - Husband (Host)
Also you got suck, just so you know.

09:33 - Wife (Host)
Yeah, you know, like they were so great, why didn't they stop me?

09:36 - Husband (Host)
Yeah, you're all dead or enslaved now.

09:39 - Wife (Host)
So they're like he.

09:41 - Husband (Host)
He's like sucks to suck but I lament for you anyway, so it's all good sucks to suck and sorry for you. Yeah, what a shitty, what a shitty, deity yeah.

09:52 - Wife (Host)
I'm powerful. You know what?

09:53 - Husband (Host)
this is just. This is shitty treatment of human beings, like there is no need to create such a horrible environment for other tribes. Even if you're, even if you're killing them, right, if you're at war with another tribe, you this is beyond treating them badly right. This is, this is beyond conquering them.

10:15 - Wife (Host)
This is Decimating them you could just do the snappening, like what happened in Marvel.

10:23 - Husband (Host)
You could just occupy their land and let most of them live if they throw down their arms.

10:27 - Wife (Host)
But if you have to kill them or get rid of them because maybe there's too many, you could just snap them out of existence. You don't have to cause well, God could yeah that's what I'm saying. If you really want your people to have that land so much, you could make it to where the people don't physically suffer right.

10:46 - Husband (Host)
So why? Why do we have to do all this physical suffering? I don't know and why do your Godly people who are fighting, apparently, for you? Why would they have to die in order to kill other people for you? The whole thing is just make any sense.

11:01 - Wife (Host)
Human gross.

11:02 - Husband (Host)
Yeah, the whole thing doesn't make any sense.

11:04 - Wife (Host)
No, and you know what I get tired of the whole. Well, you just don't understand the bigger picture and I'm like no, no, I see the big picture, just fine. That's what this book is about the big picture right.

11:17 - Husband (Host)
What they'll say, you'll chew. You're choosing not to see the message, and I'm like you're choosing also not to see the message. Yeah, you know.

11:26 - Wife (Host)
I get to be right in my eyes, you get to be right in your eyes.

11:30 - Husband (Host)
We can walk away and not punch each other and I have no problem saying because, like at the end of every Week or when we were doing Psalms and everything like that, we were going in every day we are taking into account for Apologist viewpoints and and and Scholarly viewpoints, and we're trying to go back and look at what we just read to try to understand it a little bit better. Mm-hmm, and it still makes no fucking sense.

11:55
No, I mean it, not in any real man, not in any real matter like it. There are people that are trying to make sense of it, that are trying to give it a message, but I don't agree with it.

12:06 - Wife (Host)
Yeah it's, it's just trash and I'm just, I'm not gonna grant it any more room in my brain, I'm just not right right trash. God is a dick and the Bible is dumb and these people were Prehistoric and anybody who raises them up as anything more is just simple and silly.

12:32 - Husband (Host)
Sorry, right, that's the way it needs to be relegated to a history book, a book that was from history. Yeah, we can use as such to understand that culture better but it has no real bearing on today. No no so, but that was Isaiah, chapter 16, sure as fuck was and we will be back tomorrow with Isaiah, chapter 17 we'll see you guys then bye.
