In this rib-tickling yet razor-sharp episode of Sacrilegious Discourse, we dissect the hilariously outdated diatribes of Jeremiah Chapter 10, where Christmas trees get the Old Testament side-eye and the big man upstairs gets a bit cranky. Buckle up for a no-holds-barred journey back in time with your favorite irreverent atheists as we explore how ancient scriptures somehow foreshadowed your Aunt Karen's tinsel-laden Douglas Fir.
The Bible: a book where prophets rage against the very customs that modern-day Christians hold dear. We're reading Jeremiah's hot takes, and spoiler alert: he's not a fan of your festive fir. If you thought the War on Christmas was a modern invention, wait until you hear what the OG party pooper had to say about decking the halls with boughs of... idolatry?
Join us as we laugh our way through the cognitive dissonance of Christmas traditions with roots so pagan they make your horoscope look like gospel. We’ll unpack the cherry-picked justifications religious apologists use to gloss over their tree-trimming, all while taking a side quest into the ongoing saga of the Israelite drama-fest.
As always, we keep the wit dialed up and the reverence dialed down, ensuring you get your weekly dose of skepticism with a side of snark. By the end of this episode, you'll never look at a nativity scene the same way again, and you might just feel a little less guilty about that Santa Claus cookie jar.
Whether you're here for the biblical banter, the cultural critique, or just to avoid actual Christmas shopping, we've got you covered. So, pour yourself some eggnog (spike optional, but recommended), and settle in for an episode that's more enlightening than a rooftop reindeer display. Remember to hit that subscribe button harder than a mall Santa's lap at the height of the holiday season, and leave us a review that shines brighter than the Star of Bethlehem.

[00:00:00] Hey everyone, husband here.
[00:00:05] And I'm wife.
[00:00:06] If you've been listening to us, then you know we're all about reading the Bible and
[00:00:10] reacting to it on our first read-through.
[00:00:12] Cuss words, crying, laughing, and more.
[00:00:14] We're passionate about creating a podcast that takes the sanctity out of the sacred
[00:00:17] text and simply stating it as we see it.
[00:00:19] But we can't do it without your help.
[00:00:21] We're asking for your support to help us keep this podcast going.
[00:00:24] There are two ways you can donate. we're reading the Bible for the very first time. We grew up without religion and wanted to know what all the fuss was about. Well, what have we learned so far? That God is a dick and apparently some people believe in talking donkeys? We're not trying to pass ourselves off as experts. Nope, we're just reading the Bible for the first time and giving our first take reaction. If you'd like to join us in this venture, you might consider starting in episode 1.
[00:01:42] Otherwise, jump in wherever you like.
[00:01:44] Alright, let's go read the Bible.
[00:01:46] Yeah, let's happens to people. And don't forget to circumcise your heart. Yeah, yeah, that's another thing. So anyway, that was Jeremiah chapter nine. Sharest fuck was. Which means that today we're getting into. Jeremiah chapter 10. months to lock in favings. Taxes and fees extra. Additional restrictions apply. See full terms at mintmobile.com. Acast powers the world's best podcasts. Here's a show that we recommend. This week, we analyze the not the end is fucking nine. Yeah. Yeah. So that's what's happening. Okay. All right. Here are the word, which the Lord speaks to you. Oh, house of Israel, thus says the Lord, do not learn the way of the Gentiles. Do not be dismayed at the signs of heaven for the Gentiles are dismayed at them.
[00:05:42] Okay, I got a note about that.
[00:05:44] Okay. Yeah.
[00:05:45] I just wonder what these folks are. Okay. So that's he's telling them stop being like that. Okay. All right. That's fair. I mean, I guess. I mean, I mean, honestly, we he's just stopping a step too far. He's going, he's not going far enough because we really don't need to worry about any of this shit. Right. Right. Whatever.
[00:07:02] Exactly. It's like, oh, you're so close. Yeah. So it's fine that we have a tree because we no longer give reverence to it as a pagan idol. Oh, I see, I see. We can do the ritual. Yeah. As long as we don't give any special meaning to that tree. It's not an idol. We can do the acts as though it's an idol,
[00:08:23] but we don't treat it as an idol.
[00:08:25] So it's okay.
[00:08:26] Yeah.
[00:08:27] I'm calling bullshit a little bit here. I like to read because some of his notes are cool. Yeah, okay. Like the one I just read was kind of interesting. It's an interesting take. Yeah. This particular apologist says that we are borrowing from other cultures is fine. It's when they take our stuff and do it that that's bad.
[00:09:44] What the fuck does that matter?
[00:09:46] What do we care whether they take it or not? When people do that, they are giving reverence to these idols, and that is bad and wrong. Right, right. So... I shouldn't say Christmas is stupid. People, even atheists, celebrate Christmas as a giving holiday, as a family gathering holiday. It's not stupid.
[00:11:00] What's stupid to me about it is the...
[00:11:02] The religion and the commercialism. Catholic church, it's a symbol. Right, and to say otherwise it's very disingenuous. Yeah. So like you're attributing ideas to these people that you don't understand because you don't, you're not worshiping that way. You're not worshiping these, you don't understand their practices. You're assuming things about them. But what's really funny is that a Catholic will like do their rosary beads.
[00:12:21] Yeah.
[00:12:22] Like how fucking pagan is that?
[00:12:23] Right, right.
[00:12:24] So fucking pagan.
[00:12:25] Yeah.
[00:12:26] But they're like I don't agree with it, but it makes me feel like they at least are,
[00:13:40] they understand that yes, this was written by men.
[00:13:44] It is not, it's not, it doesn't hold weight
[00:14:42] So he's like, they're nothing. Right.
[00:14:43] You know, cause they're an animate object.
[00:14:44] Sure.
[00:14:45] In as much as there is none like you, old Lord, you are great and your name is great
[00:14:50] in might who would not fear you.
[00:14:53] Oh, King of the nations.
[00:14:55] Like me.
[00:14:56] Me also.
[00:14:57] Yeah.
[00:14:58] Yeah.
[00:14:59] Not afraid.
[00:15:00] For this is your rightful do for among all the wise men of the nations and in all their
[00:15:06] kingdoms, there is not an an anemone object, right? That is a literal godly piece of work that God sat on. And it's still in. Right, right. At some level, right?
[00:16:20] Like we've kind of moved on from the ark a little bit
[00:16:22] because it's gone.
[00:16:23] Right.
[00:16:24] But if it wasn't, just imagine.
[00:16:25] Right, right? Like, let's say World War III happens, right? God forbid. Sorry. Manorous speech, apologize. But let's just say something like, like, the Christians would be like,
[00:17:41] well, God's just showing the God's pissed. This is you're saying. That's fucking problematic. Yeah. Yeah. He has made the earth by his power. We're talking about how there's only one true God and all the others aren't real. Even though he doesn't even know about North or South America. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. He has made the Oh, so you like it again? Yeah, yeah. Without knowledge, every metal smith is put to shame by an image for his molded image is falsehood and there is no breath in them. Fake shit, you know? They are futile, a work of errors.
[00:20:20] In the time of their punishment, they shall perish.
[00:20:23] Oh, yeah.
[00:20:24] For those artists, we've read. Yeah. So I had a note about verse 11. Let me reread that because I don't remember even though we literally just read it. Okay. Thus you shall say to them the gods that have not made the heavens and the earth shall perish from the land oh and habitant of the fortress for thus says the Lord behold I will throw out at this time the inhabitants of the land and will distress them that they may find it so Whoa is me from my hurt my wound is severe wait God's wound because he's because he's no this is oh
[00:23:05] Jeremiah's crying again. Okay. He's Behold, the noise of the report has come in a great commotion out of the North country to make the cities of Judah desolate, Adena Jackals. We really like that. Yeah. It's almost like we repeat half the ship from the previous chapter, almost every chapter.
[00:24:22] It's almost like they had a word count that they had to aspire to.
[00:24:27] And so they just did a lot of copy pasting. who do not know you and on the families who do not call on your name. Yeah. Yeah. Be mad at those fuckers over there. Yeah. Like, oh, spare me. But it does make people that don't believe in you. Go, go kill them. It does make me wonder like that. That is something that bothers me. Like he actually uses some of these people that don't believe in him as tools
[00:25:41] to kill the people that sort of believe in him. Yeah. Right. Yeah.
[00:25:44] And so he's not punishing the people that literally don't believe in him at all.
[00:25:48] Right. Okay, last sentence here. Okay. Blah, blah, blah.
[00:27:00] You go get them families who do not call on your name.
[00:27:04] For they have eaten up Jacob, devoured him of Jerusalem when this was, like that's how it's feeling. Although we feel like this might have been written in the Babylonian exile, or at least parts of it might have been at least edited then. Because there was that excerpt from the Babylonian, so like obviously some of this got kind of mixed around at different times.
[00:28:20] And it's hard to tell what he's reporting,
[00:28:22] like firsthand witness versus what he's witnessing to see the future. And if there's one thing that's consistent in the Bible, is that the wording and the writing of it has been tampered with multiple times. Yeah. And that everything's a goddamn mess. Right. From Christmas trees to... We can definitely count on that. Yeah. Yeah. For sure. Yep. So anyway, that was Jeremiah chapter 10.
[00:29:40] Sure as fuck was.
[00:29:41] Which means that today's Friday.
[00:29:43] Yes.
[00:29:44] And we'll be back tomorrow with...
[00:29:46] Q&A Saturday. back on Monday with Jeremiah chapter 11. All right guys, we'll see you then. Bye. Yay. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Hey wife, I guess that's the end.
