Jeremiah Chapter 20: Bible Study for Atheists

Jeremiah Chapter 20: Bible Study for Atheists

This chapter is Jeremiah throwing a full-on tantrum. Apparently, he's not a big fan of being mocked and criticized for his "prophecies" (air quotes intended). He complains to God about how unfair it all is, using flowery language that wouldn't be out of place in a bad country song.

Here are some of the highlights (or lowlights, depending on your perspective):

  • Verse 7: Jeremiah claims God "deceived" him into becoming a prophet. Not a good look for someone claiming to speak for a divine being.
  • Verse 8: He complains that whenever he tries to stop prophesying, he just can't help himself. Sounds more like an obsession than a divine calling.
  • Verse 18: Jeremiah whines about how everyone hates him because of his pronouncements. Maybe it's not the message, but the messenger?

Overall, this chapter is a prime example of why some people might find the whole prophet business a bit suspect. If this is the kind of behavior God condones from his chosen spokespeople, maybe it's best to just stick to reason and good ol' fashioned critical thinking.

[00:00:00] Hey everyone, Husband here.

[00:00:05] And I'm Wife.

[00:00:06] If you've been listening to us, then you know we're all about reading the Bible and

[00:00:09] reacting to it on our first read through.

[00:00:12] Cuss words, crying, laughing, and more.

[00:00:14] We're passionate about creating a podcast that takes the sanctity out of the sacred

[00:00:17] text and simply stating it as we see it.

[00:00:19] But we can't do it without your help.

[00:00:21] We're asking for your support to help us keep this podcast going.

[00:00:24] There are two ways you can donate. we're reading the Bible for the very first time. We grew up without religion and wanted to know what all the fuss was about. Well, what have we learned so far? That God is a dick and apparently some people believe in talking donkeys. We're not trying to pass ourselves off as experts. Nope, we're just reading the Bible for the first time and giving our first take reaction. If you'd like to join us in this venture, you might consider starting at episode one.

[00:01:42] Otherwise, jump in wherever you like. Alright, let's go read the Bible. Yeah,

[00:01:46] let's get to make. You are the sorriest. I always, I feel like I always have apologies. But, Much like Nirvana, you're all apologies.

[00:03:00] I'm all apologies.

[00:03:01] That was a good one.

[00:03:02] Right, right, right.

[00:03:04] What are you sorry for this time?

[00:03:06] Well, I'm sorry that we are using a new computer of the flask and the, you know, telling everybody they're gonna die horrible deaths. Which means that today we're getting into. Jeremiah chapter 20. All right, let's do this. Okey dokey. Okey dokey. Okey dokey. Okey dokey. Okey dokey. Okey dokey. Okey dokey. Okey dokey. Okey dokey. Okey dokey. Okey dokey. Okey dokey. Okey dokey.

[00:04:20] All right, we are jumping into Jeremiah chapter 20.

[00:04:23] Okay.

[00:04:24] Now, Pashur.

[00:04:26] Pashur?

[00:04:27] Pashur, the out of the stocks okay then Jeremiah said Walking captivity, boom. You shall go to Babylon, bitches, and there you shall die. So this is God, is he talking to Pashur? Jeremiah is telling Pashur, God says, you will be buried there. You and all your friends to whom you have prophesied lies, fucker. I gotta be honest here, you know,

[00:07:01] Pashur should feel pretty privileged.

[00:07:03] God is singling him out.

[00:07:05] Like God knows my name.

[00:07:07] Right, yeah.

[00:07:08] Sweet. against people that he didn't like. Yeah, he's just full of shit. He's blustery and talking trash. Right, right. Okay, so now Jeremiah is talking, okay? Okay. And this is his lament. All right. Okay. Oh, Lord, you induced me and I was persuaded. You know what'm bending you backwards. Are you sure that's what you wanted to say? Mayor who man? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So Jeremiah's continuing then I said I will not make mention of him nor speak

[00:09:41] Anymore in his name, but his word was in my Okay. God is with me. All right. Therefore, my persecutors will stumble and will not prevail. Oh, we're back to loving God again. Ah, okay. Perfect, perfect.

[00:11:00] Jeremiah continues, they will be greatly ashamed

[00:11:03] for they will not prosper.

[00:11:05] Their everlasting confusion will never be forgotten. What? I think that you're trying to make this sound like a godly sermon when really it's just a- Vengeance. Personal revenge. Right. Yeah. Kill them, oh also you're really great and thank you for taking care of all the homeless. Yeah, good job man. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:12:20] Curse it, be the day in which I was born, says Jeremiah.

[00:12:23] Jesus.

[00:12:23] Here we go again.

[00:12:24] This guy is something.

[00:12:25] He's all over the place.

[00:12:27] He ain't right.

[00:12:28] That's what I'm to fucking walnuts. It's almost like Jeremiah is Privileged but then he's saying that oh my gosh that you're doing me just like job Right, right. He's a wine like I I mean, that's what Trump is doing right? He's totally Trump, right?

[00:13:42] Yeah, because like Trump was like, um, oh

[00:14:46] I was imagining yeah, not a little crybaby who is being picked on by people and wants God to kill him for doing a job on Me it's crazy. This is crazy. It's stupid. He's weird. This whole chapter has been just bullshit revenge shit

[00:14:52] Yeah, well that's been the whole book. Well, yeah, it's been a large large bit of it

[00:14:56] Yeah, let them in this is Jeremiah continuing

[00:15:00] Let the man be cursed who brought news to my father saying a male char child has been born to you

[00:15:07] Making him very glad My day should be consumed with shame, the end." Hold on, hold on, hold on. You are trying to act like the reason you're upset is because, oh, look at all the labor and sorrow of my people. Fuck you, that's not why you're crying. Don't pretend. You know, there's a small part of me, small,

[00:16:22] but there's a small part of me that wants to hear

[00:16:24] how pastors spin these chapters, right? ever heard you don't go to God and ask him for you know personal vengeance prayers like that's not a thing that you don't pray for other people to be harmed that's not how you do that right kind of left out of all of the lessons that we've ever heard second hand for sure yeah sure and this is all this guy's doing so what I'm getting out of this is that when I'm really pissed at somebody

[00:17:41] I can pray that they die I mean I sure hope that a brick falls on that guy's talking all of this negativity. You are bad for morale, shut the fuck up. Which is kind of what we were talking about the other day. And so Jeremiah kept going, and so Peshir said, man, I told you to stop. And he slapped him upside the head and locked him up and was like, maybe this will make you think twice. Shut the fuck up. And then as soon as he gets out of the stocks,

[00:19:02] he's like, nope, I'm still talking trash.

[00:19:04] Right.

[00:19:05] But again, kind of if I was these people, I'd be sick of this

[00:20:20] too.

[00:20:21] Yeah.

[00:20:22] And clearly they are.

[00:20:23] And they are.

[00:20:24] They're putting them in stockades.

[00:20:25] They're not killing him.

[00:20:26] He says they want to kill him, but like they had you in stockades.

[00:20:27] If they wanted to kill you, they could have killed you. Yeah, that's a joke. Yeah. Yeah. That's a joke. Yeah. Not making fun of anybody with mental health issues. No. Understand. I legit have mental health issues of my own and I'm on medication. I am throwing some terms off that are probably not quite correct with, you know. With regard to calling him crazy or a loom.

[00:21:40] So I do apologize for that.

[00:21:42] And we get, I get a little carried away

[00:21:44] when we're talking about these people in the Bible.

[00:21:45] Yeah.

[00:21:46] Same.

[00:21:47] And you know, we're doing a... Patreon! We got that one. All right. And then I will get the weekly wrap up done and out. And then we'll be back on Monday with... Jeremiah, chapter 21. All right. We'll see you then, guys. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye.

[00:23:00] Bye.

[00:23:00] Bye.

[00:23:01] Bye.

[00:23:01] Bye.

[00:23:02] Bye.

[00:23:02] Bye.

[00:23:03] Bye.

[00:23:03] Bye.

[00:23:04] Hey, wife.

[00:23:04] I guess that's the end.

[00:23:06] But husband, that's just sad.

[00:23:08] It doesn't have to be.
