Jeremiah Chapter 40: Atheist Bible Study

Jeremiah Chapter 40: Atheist Bible Study

Hold on to your secular scepters and don your critical crowns, folks, because we're diving headfirst into the biblical equivalent of a soap opera with Jeremiah Chapter 40. It's another episode of our irreverent deep-dive podcast where we tackle the absurdities of ancient scripture with a hefty dose of skepticism and a pinch (or two) of snark. Today's scriptural saga has all the ingredients for a peak-time drama: political backstabbing, a governor too naive for his own good, and a prophet who might just be the ancient world's answer to James Bond.

Join us as we break down the antics of the newly minted governor Gedaliah, who seems to have skipped every single class at the School of Political Acumen. We'll discuss the real possibility of Jeremiah being a double agent – because let's face it, nothing screams "espionage" like being treated well by your captors, right? We'll even toss around the theory of the captain of the guard being Jeremiah's handler, because every good spy story needs a handler, and why should the Bible be any different?

But wait, there's more! We're not just giving you the play-by-play of ancient Judah's descent into chaos; we're sprinkling in some laughs, questioning the supposedly divine prophecy, and maybe – just maybe – rewriting a bit of history as we go along. Because who doesn't love a good conspiracy theory about their favorite (or least favorite) holy texts?

So tune in, turn on, and drop out of your preconceived notions as we explore the zany antics of post-exilic Judah. Whether you're here for the history, the humor, or just to hear us poke holes in another chapter of the Bible, we've got you covered. Don't forget to like, subscribe, and sacrifice a goat to the algorithm gods for good SEO. Catch you on the flip side of heresy!

[00:01:16] Welcome to sacrilegious discourse. I'm husband and I'm wife. Together we're reading the

[00:01:20] Bible for the very first time. We grew up without religion and wanted to know what all the fuss was

[00:01:25] about. Well, what did we learn so far? That God is a dick and apparently some people believe in

[00:01:31] talking donkeys? We're not trying to pass ourselves off as experts. Nope, we're just reading the

[00:01:35] Bible for the first time and giving our first take reaction. If you'd like to join us in this venture

[00:01:40] you might consider starting at episode one. Otherwise jump in wherever you like. All right let's go

[00:01:45] read the Bible. Yeah let's get to it. Husband, wife, do you remember what happened yesterday and

[00:01:54] where the hell we are today? Well, we actually read it earlier today. Well we read it yesterday but

[00:02:00] we released it today and this one's going out later than we had liked so but yesterday today whatever

[00:02:08] we read Jeremiah chapter 39. Correct. And in that episode I believe Kings Edakaya had his eyes

[00:02:16] gouged out by King Nebuchadnezzar because you know they got they caught him. Because that's how you

[00:02:22] do? Yeah he was told he's going to get screwed over so he did and then let's see Jeremiah

[00:02:32] got told he was going to you guys treat you like kind of like stately you know?

[00:02:37] Kind of like how you would treat somebody who's on your ear. Yeah, yeah right yeah and on top of

[00:02:44] that the guy that tried to help him out and like rescue him out of the cistern and all that the

[00:02:48] bed and the leg. Yeah he got also treated well by Nebuchadnezzar. Curious or incurious sir?

[00:02:57] It is. It solidified my ideas with regard to him being a double agent yeah for sure.

[00:03:04] The important thing to note in that chapter is that Jerusalem got breached and went down.

[00:03:10] Yeah and the other important note is that that being the case this is the beginning of the Babylonian

[00:03:16] exile. Right. So those are the two important factors as far as timelines go and things like that

[00:03:22] but the storyline the double agent shit it's I'm loving it. It's so good. It is great shit.

[00:03:30] It really needs to be some kind of Netflix series. It really does. This is like fan-fix something

[00:03:36] yeah this is amazing. Yeah I love it. All right so that was Jeremiah chapter 39. Sure

[00:03:41] as fuck was which means that today we're reading Jeremiah chapter 40. All right let's do this. Okie dokie

[00:05:28] today

[00:05:32] all right we are hopping into Jeremiah chapter 40 okay and just a quick note before we hop

[00:05:38] into the chapter oh boy it's not what you think it is no no no um this chapter is part of that

[00:05:44] narrative section consisting of chapters 37 to 44 oh okay so we are in story land sure but it's

[00:05:51] not forget got it okay yep all right so it's not a different chapter in the um not that I could

[00:05:58] find not that it was noted that seems very odd to me I didn't see that it was listed separately

[00:06:06] so I'm just going with it all right I'm calling BS on this but okay the word came the word or

[00:06:13] I'm sorry the word that came the word that came okay Jeremiah from the Lord after Nebuchadnezzat no wrong

[00:06:22] wrong the other Nebuchadnezzaradan okay sorry my brain was just like it says Nebuchadnezzat is sure

[00:06:29] yeah you know can either yeah right um so let me start that sentence over yeah yeah the word that came

[00:06:35] to Jeremiah from the Lord after nebuchadnezzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from Rama

[00:06:43] when he had taken him bound and chains among all who were carried away captive from Jerusalem to Judah

[00:06:50] uh huh who were carried away captive to Babylon and that's the end of the sentence oh that's a really

[00:06:57] weird sentence it's not a sentence it's an intro actually oh it reads as a it's set up as a

[00:07:04] sentence that's verse one okay it's like I am about to be a sentence but until you get to the end

[00:07:09] of this you won't know it's not a sentence and that it is actually just a title is type thing right

[00:07:15] that was the period yeah okay yeah okay and the captain of the guard took Jeremiah and said to him

[00:07:22] the Lord your God has pronounced this doom on this place now the Lord has brought it boom he brought

[00:07:29] the boom and has just has done just as he said whoa wait wait the captain of the guard said this

[00:07:35] yeah wait now the captain of the guard is speaking for the Lord the captain of the guard no the captain

[00:07:40] of the guard isn't speaking for the Lord the captain of the guard is like man your God brought this

[00:07:47] but he's saying this to Jeremiah right Jeremiah is literally the one that was telling everybody yeah

[00:07:52] that God was gonna bring this so clearly um we're supposed to believe that uh the captain of the guard

[00:07:58] is one of two things okay either dumb that's not what I was gonna say but you're probably right no he's

[00:08:05] either um really really impressed like wow your God is awesome and he did this stuff yeah or which

[00:08:14] I never believe when they say that people outside of the religion are impressed with their God

[00:08:19] right right yeah no yeah never talked about that before that right so so we're supposed to believe

[00:08:25] either that or that um more likely he was somebody who was already familiar with Jeremiah and they

[00:08:36] had already maybe he was like Jeremiah's handler right like as the double agent yes that's what I'm

[00:08:41] saying like they probably and he's like damn this shit happened whoa right and then Jeremiah

[00:08:48] rewrote that to be like damn your God brought this yeah you know what I'm saying like I think it's

[00:08:54] that I think Jeremiah just like tooting his own horn and saying how other people were like he's like

[00:09:00] other people totally said the same thing I said yeah other people were so impressed with me God

[00:09:07] I mean God yeah yeah okay so the captain of the guard took Jeremiah and said to him whoa the

[00:09:14] Lord your God is pronounced this doom on this place now the Lord has brought it and has done just

[00:09:19] as he said just as you said he said right yeah whatever you Jeremiah let's not mince word we're

[00:09:25] talking to right because you people have sinned against the Lord you know the Lord that I don't

[00:09:30] fucking believe in because you people who follow a different God than I do sinned against your

[00:09:36] your God he who I don't give a shit about is punishing you yeah no this conversation never took

[00:09:43] place I'm just here to tell you and anyway since you guys sinned against the Lord and you have not

[00:09:49] obeyed his voice therefore this thing has come upon you and now look I free you this day from

[00:09:56] the chains that were on your hand okay you know because your king fucking told you to do yes right

[00:10:02] me if it seems good to you to come with me to Babylon come and I will look after you the alternative is

[00:10:10] but if this is where I'm saying that Jeremiah gets a really really he gets treated really well yeah okay

[00:10:17] but if it seems wrong for you to come with me to Babylon remain here so he gets a choice wow he

[00:10:22] can stay with the remnants that got left behind or he can go to Babylon and be looked after by

[00:10:28] the head of the guard yeah where he would probably be treated well obviously the love of the

[00:10:34] amount of his chains shit so like ordered by the leader of their people I mean he doesn't get

[00:10:40] much better than that by name right yeah yeah so the guard is like giving him the choice because

[00:10:47] the guards in charge of him the guards like you can come or go either way it's time whichever

[00:10:52] you think is better you get you get a pass yeah you you get to choose right nobody else just you

[00:10:57] right see maybe a bed malec right I don't know I don't know see all the land is before you

[00:11:04] wherever it seems good and convenient for you to go go there so he's like the whole world is yours

[00:11:12] yeah decide what you want to do with it thanks for playing on team Babylon and you're you're

[00:11:18] free to go man yeah right okay now while Jeremiah had not yet gone back never Zeradhan sorry yeah yeah

[00:11:27] yeah chicken my brain sure Nebius Zeradhan said go back to get a liar the son of a hecom the son of

[00:11:34] Shafan whom the king of Babylon has made governor over the cities of Judah and dwell with him

[00:11:40] among the people or you know go wherever it seems convenient for you to go so the captain of the

[00:11:46] guard gave him rations and a gift and let him go wow okay a gift even yeah damn um so in other um

[00:11:57] translations it says rations and supplies okay all right sure yeah also um let me read one more

[00:12:05] verse I do like the gift idea though because of the day double agent stuff yeah I'm just saying like

[00:12:09] no I payment in and full yes you are gold you are good to go then Jeremiah went to get a

[00:12:16] liar the son of a hecom to misspa and dwelt with him among the people who were left in the land okay

[00:12:23] yeah so let me read you some notes that I have now sure okay so get a liar was the son of a hecom

[00:12:29] as we said right the son of Shafan who was Josiah's secretary and he's the one that carried the

[00:12:36] newly found scroll to the king way back when okay remember that um the newly found scroll there was

[00:12:43] a newly found scroll when he like found some uh uh word of god stuff okay and then Josiah was

[00:12:53] like cool because he was one of the good kings sure yeah only they I do kind of remember something

[00:12:59] like that but only vaguely right so so hecom so these are all like god people okay talking about

[00:13:06] them okay a hecom was part of the delegation that Josiah sent to the prophet as holda he also

[00:13:14] offered protection to Jeremiah after he had preached the temple sermon so these people were all

[00:13:20] in good graces with Jeremiah and Jeremiah was in good graces with them got it okay and these were

[00:13:25] people of higher status sure yeah yeah in appointing get a liar it was a parent that never could

[00:13:33] nether no longer trusted the men of the house of David so he chose a man who had administrative

[00:13:40] experience but was not of the royal line got it and also might I suggest people who had been

[00:13:49] probably helping to bring Babylon in right yeah these people were all on Jeremiah's side and Jeremiah

[00:14:00] was on um Babylon's side yeah so I just have to believe that there was like this cabal and that

[00:14:08] there was a whole coup that happened and so it feels that way never could nether is like giving

[00:14:15] chart giving back the land to the people that he handplucked yeah you know who had helped him right okay

[00:14:22] so Jeremiah then lived among the poorest and most wretched of the land except for the people

[00:14:28] that were in charge that they was actually staying with right but he stayed with those who were not

[00:14:32] sent to Babylon right okay yeah the great bulk of these Judeans were of the underprivileged classes

[00:14:39] but there were others including some royal princesses as well as remnants of the Judean army who may

[00:14:46] have been engaged in guerrilla activity against the Chaldeans wow that's kind of interesting yeah I

[00:14:52] I'll you don't really think of that when you're thinking of biblical times like you know guerrilla

[00:14:58] activity yeah guerrilla warfare and stuff like that that's very interesting like underground but

[00:15:03] that would describe a lot of stuff that yeah I would describe a lot of the stuff earlier in the Bible

[00:15:07] when like the um that came the nights were not ever completely destroyed yeah and they just kept

[00:15:13] being there yeah like they were obviously engaged in some sort of like guerrilla warfare and like

[00:15:18] right running over here to stay alive and then going over there and whatever you know hiding out

[00:15:23] in somebody's attic yeah sure yeah yeah yeah so yeah I just thought that was kind of yeah right

[00:15:30] I had no idea and I wonder how they felt about I wonder how those guerrilla warfare people

[00:15:34] felt about like people like Jeremiah and you know all these people that stayed to run the kingdom for

[00:15:41] yeah never measure right yeah yeah yeah interestate yeah and when all the captains of the armies

[00:15:47] who were in the fields they and their men heard that the king of Babylon had made get a liar the

[00:15:52] son of a heathgum governor in the land and had committed to him men women and children and the

[00:15:58] poorest of the land who had not been carried away captive to Babylon then they came to get a liar

[00:16:05] at Mesba ish male the so call me ish male ish male the son of Nathaniah Jo Han I'm sorry

[00:16:18] okay Jo Han in and Jonathan the sons of Kareya so Reya the son of Tannumeth the sons of Efi

[00:16:28] the Natofaite and Jezaniah the son of Mayah Chathite they and their men okay yeah

[00:16:37] and get a liar the son of a heathgum the son of Shafan took an oath before them and their men saying

[00:16:45] do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans dwell in the land and serve the king of Babylon

[00:16:51] and it shall be well with you okay as for me I will indeed dwell at Mesba and serve the Chaldeans

[00:16:59] who come to us but you gather wine and summer fruit and oil put them in your vessels and dwell

[00:17:05] in your cities that you have taken okay yeah yeah yeah likewise when all the Jews who were in Moab

[00:17:13] among the Ammonites in Edom who were in all the countries heard that the king of Babylon had left

[00:17:20] a remnant of Judah and that he had set over them get a liar the son of a heathgum the son of Shafan

[00:17:27] then all the Jews returned out of all places where they had been driven and came to the land of Judah

[00:17:34] to get a liar at Mesba and gathered wine and summer fruit in abundance okay so I guess they

[00:17:42] were like all of that be or whatever but that doesn't make any like it sounds like the return to Judah

[00:17:48] right but I know it wasn't because that was 70 years down the line yeah so this is some other return

[00:17:55] to Judah or I'm interested in right what that meant exactly I guess but like I guess it's like they

[00:18:02] were saying okay so Babylon is letting some of us live now that they've conquered Jerusalem and

[00:18:09] burned it down yeah they're letting the rest of us live and they're saying and they put people that

[00:18:15] we know in charge right I guess it's safe to come out of hiding and come okay over here so like

[00:18:22] maybe the people out in the countryside and stuff like that were like yeah well let's go move

[00:18:27] into the city there's plenty of room now right that's rude all right but things about to get dark

[00:18:34] okay yeah moreover Johanna hand the son of Kareya and all the captains of the forces that were in

[00:18:41] the fields came to get a liar at Mesba and said to him do you certainly know that they all

[00:18:48] list the king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael the son of Nethanaya to murder you wow right

[00:18:56] this is quick to get back to the whole you know intrigue yeah yeah but get a liar the son of a hecom

[00:19:03] did not believe them he was like nah no way why wouldn't you but whatever nobody would try to murder me

[00:19:11] right okay all right I'm a good guy who would want to murder me I mean you were installed by the enemy

[00:19:17] for so you know then Johanna hand the son of Kareya spoke secretly to get a liar in Mesba

[00:19:25] saying let me go please and I will kill Ishmael the son of Nethanaya and no one will know it why

[00:19:32] should he murder you so that all the Jews who are gathered to you would be scattered and the

[00:19:36] remnant in Judah parish but get a liar the son of a hecom said to Johanna hand the son of Kareya

[00:19:43] Kareya you shall not do this thing for you speak falsely concerning Ishmael Ishmael never want to kill me

[00:19:52] so okay I got some notes ready yeah Ishmael the son of Nethanaya was of royal heritage

[00:20:00] who was an enthusiastic member of the anti Babylonian party oh and he was both jealous of and filled

[00:20:07] with hatred for get a liar got it okay I'm anti Babylonian party like this sounds like a political

[00:20:14] party right yeah not not a balloons and ice cream party can call me anti-babs the anti-babs I love

[00:20:23] now since Ishmael the would be executioner was of the royal house of David okay yeah he may have

[00:20:30] been slided or may have felt slided in being passed over for the responsible office of governor so Ishmael

[00:20:38] the son of Nethanaya had won his trust in some way got it and that's why dude was like no way he

[00:20:46] would never try to kill me get a liar's like I love this guy why would he try to kill me right what

[00:20:52] he thinks gonna happen he's gonna get killed who could know that's next chapter oh oh I mean

[00:20:59] I think it's a pretty safe bet yeah yeah because anybody who's that trustee you know when they

[00:21:05] mention it like that yeah it's it's a done deal they didn't know how to do foreshadowing very well

[00:21:10] back then they really needed some literary agents and editors and stuff right I feel like they're

[00:21:17] trying really hard to carry on this story in in Judah when there's not really a story to be had

[00:21:24] there right like the Babylonian exile has started they're it's not just started it's it's done

[00:21:31] it's on right right and this is the remnant that they left yeah to field dirt to to to man the fields

[00:21:38] and stuff yeah so I don't I feel like this is like try hard here right this is this is not really

[00:21:44] needed maybe I don't know we'll see what happens but it is interesting to find out that there is

[00:21:50] still David David's descendants around so yeah they're they're clamoring for the

[00:21:57] but Jeremiah seems to be on the other guy's side right maybe right and I don't know

[00:22:02] I will see Jeremiah's got a bad lot you know he always gets in these these predicaments where

[00:22:08] he's gonna get in trouble for for saying what he says so it would make it more interesting to

[00:22:12] finish out the rest of the book if we had some more you know

[00:22:16] mesh and it wouldn't be any fun if you had everything was rosy and good so yeah gotta get some

[00:22:23] politics up in here definitely definitely they're still fighting for power the whole city is done

[00:22:30] gone and burned down and the land has been conquered and they're still fighting for power over

[00:22:37] what's left right right that is hilarious to me honestly yep um so that was uh Jeremiah chapter 40

[00:22:45] sure spoke was um and before I get into what we're doing next but I do want to cover this so this

[00:22:50] is coming out as soon as we get done recording this which is early morning like after midnight

[00:22:57] on uh what would have been Friday Friday night now going into Saturday right so um

[00:23:03] we're gonna get this out now and then tomorrow we're gonna be recording the Q&A

[00:23:08] at some point later in the evening tomorrow and then we'll be recording the uh book club I think

[00:23:14] on Sunday at some point but it won't be like our normal morning release times right so I apologize

[00:23:20] for that in advance because we're still working to catch up yeah we don't want you

[00:23:24] slided over you know us having misday so you guys get less content we're trying to give you

[00:23:31] the same amount of content but the schedule has had to be changed around a little bit so that we

[00:23:36] can squeeze it all in and this just lets us do it lets us do it in a way that is less stressful for us

[00:23:41] so we're rather than doing three episodes all in one day yeah we're gonna keep it on schedule

[00:23:46] this week but it is gonna be a little behind schedule in that schedule yes so um anyway that was

[00:23:52] Jeremiah chapter 40 sure spoke was and like I already said we'll be back with so I guess I

[00:23:58] really got to cover that but beyond that on Monday we will be back with Jeremiah chapter 41

[00:24:04] all right we'll see you guys then be hey wife I guess that's the end but husband that's just sad
