Jeremiah Chapter 49: Atheist Bible Study

Jeremiah Chapter 49: Atheist Bible Study

In the latest irreverent deep-dive, your favorite godless guides embark on a rollicking journey through the biblical rabbit hole of Jeremiah Chapter 49. It's an episode that raises more eyebrows than divine inspiration as we navigate the tumultuous waters of supposed divine wrath and geographical gaffes. Join us as we expose the bewildering fate of tribes that God can't seem to decide whether to smite or spare, in "Jeremiah Chapter 49."

Prepare to have your ancient Near East map flipped upside down as we unravel the perplexing case of the Ammonites and Moabites – tribes that the Big Guy in the Sky previously scheduled for divine deletion, yet here they are, back in the narrative like an unwanted sequel. We tackle the head-scratching prophecies that see these so-called obliterated nations pop up again like bad pennies, defying heavenly extinction and narrative consistency.

As we march through the episode, expect a heavy dose of sarcasm as we critique the hyperbolic language that paints God as a petulant child with a magnifying glass aimed at ants. The divine penchant for destruction gets a thorough roast, and the odd comparison of warriors' fears to the pains of childbirth? Yeah, we've got a bone to pick with that tired metaphor.

Buckle up for a snark-filled examination of divine judgement, where the logic is flimsy and the prophetic messages read like a celestial game of Whack-a-Mole. And if you thought the Almighty was all about unique punishments, think again. This episode showcases a deity with a one-trick-pony approach to smiting – a playbook that apparently only has the page for "razing cities" dog-eared for frequent use.

Tune in for an episode that's equal parts biblical scholarship and blasphemous banter. We'll laugh, we'll scoff, and we might even learn something – like how not to write a holy book. Whether you're a die-hard atheist, a Bible buff, or just someone who enjoys a divine comedy, "Jeremiah Chapter 49" is the sacrilegious scripture study session you didn't know you needed.

[00:01:16] Welcome to sacrilegious discourse. I'm husband and I'm wife. Together we're reading the

[00:01:20] Bible for the very first time. We grew up without religion and wanted to know what all the fuss was

[00:01:25] about. Well, what do we learn so far? That God is a dick and apparently some people believe in

[00:01:31] talking donkeys. We're not trying to pass ourselves off as experts. Nope, we're just reading the

[00:01:35] Bible for the first time and giving our first take reaction. If you'd like to join us in this venture

[00:01:40] you might consider starting at episode one. Otherwise jump in wherever you like. All right let's go

[00:01:45] read the Bible. Yeah let's get to it. Husband, wife! Do you remember what the fuck happened yesterday

[00:01:54] and where the hell we are today? Well, yesterday we read Jeremiah chapter 48. We did. And in that

[00:02:01] chapter God or Jeremiah or both of them whatever. Along with Baruch probably. Yeah something like that.

[00:02:09] We're talking about the Moabites which caught me a little bit off guard. Right because I thought all

[00:02:15] the Moabites had been wiped out previously because that's what they told us I think. At least

[00:02:19] that's how I recalled it. It was like a deep cut from like Exodus. Yeah, yeah it was. I mean

[00:02:25] definitely they were talking about them in Exodus. They might have talked about them a little bit past

[00:02:28] there but not much. Right. So I was a little thrown for a loop and then the way that God was referring

[00:02:35] to them was like almost like he talks about the Israelites. Yeah it was very weird. Like don't worry

[00:02:40] even though I'm going to kill most of you a remnant will remain and it's like why? Yeah it almost sounded

[00:02:47] dead on like the the Israelite story. Yeah. That we've been you know kind of hearing over and over

[00:02:52] again through the different prophets and different kings and what have you. Right. And I just was like okay

[00:02:57] so there's other the maybe you care about other people I don't know. I'm confused. I'm

[00:03:04] as well. What the fuck right and so anyway but he's going to kill them leave a little bit of him

[00:03:12] is going to chase him away they're going to run away they might come back and yeah so that's

[00:03:17] the Moabites. That was the Moabites. And that was chapter 48 of Jeremiah. It sure as fuck was. That

[00:03:22] means that today we're getting into Jeremiah chapter 49 and before we do I don't want to reiterate

[00:03:29] that for the remainder of this week including today we are not going to be doing notes throughout

[00:03:34] the episode because we're going to save them for the end of the week due to the nature of these

[00:03:41] strange strange lengthy episodes. The strange and last one the last one was lengthy but we just

[00:03:50] decided that it might be better to just do it all and kind of one and over you know over arching

[00:03:55] geography driven things since these are more about the geography of all the various cities

[00:04:03] lying around surrounding Israel. And I feel like if we do notes throughout these it just

[00:04:09] might overwhelm the actual readings. Yeah but yeah anyway so we're going to be jumping into Jeremiah

[00:04:15] chapter 49 here. You ready to do this? So yeah yes yes let's do it. Okie dokie

[00:06:07] All right so we are here hopping into Jeremiah chapter 49 all right and once again we are in the

[00:06:15] final stages of the book of Jeremiah yeah um the last few chapters of which are a unit of chapters

[00:06:25] that kind of go with each other but not with the rest of the book right yeah I honestly feel

[00:06:30] like it could have ended at chapter 44 and this could have been thrown in somewhere else somewhere else

[00:06:36] yeah these are all oracles directed at various nations and to make it even more confusing they

[00:06:45] are not chronologically arranged they are arranged geographically got it and so they started

[00:06:52] with the nearest and then kind of spread out from there um this is a little bit of a lengthy chapter

[00:07:00] but uh the good news is that we're gonna cover like I don't know three four five different

[00:07:05] little areas of people okay so that's fun yeah okay so against the ammonites ammonites another one

[00:07:13] I thought was gone there we go and that's that's the full sentence period against the ammonites are

[00:07:18] those are probably titles um they are intros to the chapter right that we have included

[00:07:27] in this translation that we're using the niv they are included as the actual text

[00:07:35] actual text right it's part of the verse instead of the intro to the verse got it

[00:07:40] because we don't really have that yeah so but they did this the last one too so I was like this

[00:07:45] it's gotta be something yeah title it it is it is it's an intro kind of thing or a pera

[00:07:52] something I forget what they called it before because it happened early on as well got it okay so

[00:07:57] against the ammonites thus says the lord has Israel no sons has he no heir why then does milkamp

[00:08:06] inherit gad and his people dwell in it cities so I don't know who the fuck those are

[00:08:13] I guess we will find out when we do our notes well I mean I'm assuming that like you know like

[00:08:19] Israel was supposed to inherit all this land right yeah but lately we've dwindled it down to

[00:08:24] basically Jerusalem and the surrounding land around Jerusalem to where that's the only one they've

[00:08:31] been talking about so these are like these are the remnants of the other tribes that they supposedly

[00:08:37] destroyed yeah that never actually got destroyed right so they kind of went off and did their

[00:08:42] own thing yeah yeah so milkamp and her it's gad I guess sure they live in the land where gad was

[00:08:50] supposed to live right because there's no longer the Israelites there or if there are they probably are

[00:08:57] intermingled with whatever this other group is the ammonites or whatever sure so therefore be

[00:09:03] hold the days are coming says the lord that I will cause to be heard in alarm of war in

[00:09:10] roba of the ammonites it shall be a desolate mound and her villages shall be burned with fire then

[00:09:20] Israel shall take possession of his inheritance says the lord well oh hesbon for i is plundered

[00:09:29] a i i have to stop here for just a second because we're talking about Israel taking ownership of

[00:09:35] this land and we're in the book of Jeremiah and if we're to assume that this is Jeremiah speaking

[00:09:41] or something to do with Jeremiah we're assuming that this is in the same time frame as Jeremiah right

[00:09:48] essentially okay okay so that would mean that the Babylonians are coming down on this part of the land

[00:09:55] and the Egyptians also maybe we're coming in on this part of land there was all this war happening

[00:09:59] on both sides of this land right so what the fuck are they even thinking about talking about

[00:10:06] Israel taking over this land right this sounds so out of place yeah this sounds like it should have

[00:10:10] been back and like it sounds like it's from a different part of the bible right i don't i don't buy

[00:10:16] that this is anywhere or anything to do with Jeremiah or this time period no i totally agree i totally

[00:10:22] sorry that's all no you're fine cry you daughters of rabbi gurd yourselves with sack cloth

[00:10:29] lament and run to and fro by the walls for milcom shall go into captivity with his priests and his

[00:10:37] princes together why do you boast in the valleys your flowing valley oh backsliding daughter

[00:10:45] who trusted in her treasure saying who will come against me behold i will bring fear

[00:10:51] upon you says the lord god of hosts from all those who are around you you shall be driven out everyone

[00:10:58] head long and no one will gather those who wander off but afterward i will bring back the captives

[00:11:06] of the people of amon of amon sorry yeah says the lord okay okay so he's bringing these people

[00:11:12] back too yeah okay so that's the amonites now we're gonna do edam okay all right but real quick though

[00:11:18] yeah like he's bringing back some of the amonites right they're usually going to destroy some of them

[00:11:22] again this feels very like what he talks about with the israelites it it seems to me and based on some

[00:11:28] of the stuff that we've learned about how the israelites are essentially probably just canonites

[00:11:34] and like the surrounding tribes yeah just they broke off religiously from them you know so i feel like

[00:11:43] they um could this be like a rallying cry to kind of like god still hates you but come on all the

[00:11:51] canonites right we're all kind of somewhat related way back land or something so like let's all

[00:11:56] join this this group of people for god i mean god still hates you don't get me wrong but

[00:12:02] but if you join us we might forgive you on a few generations and a couple of you might live sure yeah

[00:12:07] yeah i mean that's that's the only way i could accept that this is from the same time period maybe

[00:12:13] but even as that's the words they're using even don't match with what we're used yeah very weird

[00:12:18] like the sackcloth that was very not like i'm not saying that they still didn't use sackcloths

[00:12:24] but like the term and the way that they're using it in this this chapter feels more like some of

[00:12:29] the older books than it does this book it feels very um due to ronomy yeah yeah they talked a lot

[00:12:36] about sackcloths and how to you know mourn and all this stuff back in those books yeah it wasn't so

[00:12:42] much in Jeremiah as much i'm not saying it wasn't there right but the same terminology was not

[00:12:47] used this way yeah in Jeremiah doesn't feel like it anyway right to me yeah all right moving on

[00:12:53] yes all right against edam mm-hmm thus says the lord of hosts is wisdom no more in taemon he has

[00:13:01] counsel perished from the prudent has their wisdom vanished flee turn back dwell in the depths

[00:13:09] oh inhabitants of datin for i will bring the calamity of esau upon him esau huh wow this does very much

[00:13:18] seem like a do the one of me kind of thing yeah like the time of jaco then whatever right the time

[00:13:25] that i will punish him if grape gatherers came to you would they not leave some gleaming grapes

[00:13:32] if thieves by night would they not destroy until they have enough but i have made esau bear

[00:13:39] i have uncovered his secret places oh that's his winner man and he shall not be able to hide

[00:13:45] himself we all gonna see his winner his descendants are plundered his brethren and his neighbors

[00:13:52] and he is no more leave your fatherless children i will preserve them alive and let your widows

[00:13:59] trust in me mm-hmm for thus says the lord behold those whose judgment was not to drink of the cup

[00:14:07] have a surely drunk and are you the one who will altogether go unpunished you shall not go unpunished

[00:14:15] of course not i mean it's god right couldn't let anybody go unpunished yeah but you shall surely drink

[00:14:22] for i have sworn by myself you know me damn it says the lord yeah that bhajarah

[00:14:30] shall become a desolation a reproach a waste and a curse and all its cities shall be perpetual

[00:14:39] wastes man he loves to just destroy shit mm-hmm he's like his favorite thing to do mm-hmm

[00:14:46] i have heard a message from the lord and an ambassador has been sent to the nations

[00:14:52] gather together come against her and rise up to battle for indeed i will make you small among nations

[00:15:00] despised among men your fierceness has deceived you the pride of your heart oh you who dwell in

[00:15:08] the clefts of the rock who hold the height of the hill though you make your nest as high as the eagle

[00:15:16] i will bring you down from there says the lord okay okay eat them gets a long section

[00:15:23] oh really yeah like where do they where are they so special right eat them all so shall be an

[00:15:29] astonishment everyone who goes by it will be astonished because you know it's an astonishment

[00:15:34] almost sound verbatim to some similar words that he's used for israel yeah and and i know that

[00:15:40] these people are all somewhat related ish maybe sort of at some level and so i get it like maybe

[00:15:49] it's the same tales just being told differently right and a different vein because it's coming from

[00:15:54] this other tribe mm-hmm but it's just so weird hearing this same thing for tribes that are not

[00:16:02] israel yeah i'm kind of this it seems like a bad thing to have in the bible yeah it doesn't it

[00:16:08] doesn't hold the story together very well right it makes it very um un unreliable yeah story right

[00:16:16] like yeah um reliable in so far as historical text because yeah that tracks that all these different

[00:16:24] nations were there but as far as like how a god would behave or how goddess behaved up until now

[00:16:31] right no or how the text itself has even read like this doesn't fit anything it really doesn't

[00:16:37] everyone who goes by it will be astonished and will hiss at all its plagues

[00:16:44] in the overthrow of sedhama and gamora no sottam sorry sottam and gamora sorry that was me

[00:16:52] sottam and gamora and their neighbors says the lord no one shall remain there nor shall a son of man

[00:16:59] dwelling it behold he shall come up like a lion from the flood plain of the jordan against the dwelling

[00:17:06] place of the strong but i will suddenly make him run away from her and he who is a chosen man that

[00:17:13] I may appoint over her for who is like me who will array me and who is that shepherd who will

[00:17:22] withstand me i mean according to you nobody right yeah so why are you asking right yeah it seems

[00:17:28] like a really dumb question you're the biggest you're the best you're the tallest you're the smartest

[00:17:32] you're far smell the prettiest blah blah blah right therefore here the counsel of the lord

[00:17:38] that he has taken against edam and his purposes that he has proposed against the inhabitants

[00:17:45] of taiman surely the least of the flock shall draw them out surely he shall make their dwelling

[00:17:53] places desolate with them the earth shakes at the noise of their fall at the cry its noise is heard

[00:18:01] at the red sea behold he shall come up and fly like the eagle and spread his wings over basera

[00:18:09] god will that would okay yeah the heart of the mighty men of edam in that day shall be like the

[00:18:15] heart of the woman oh in labor in birth pains yeah okay now we're doing another section of people

[00:18:23] I would say that a heart of a woman in in birth pains as they say will be pretty fucking strong

[00:18:29] because that takes a lot of god damn mental fortitude to make it through that and you know just

[00:18:34] like you got to withstand the shit ton of pain so I would say that actually is a complement

[00:18:40] as opposed to a disparaging remark yeah but hey you know whatever I just I don't like I don't like

[00:18:47] this talk they're using it's bullshit it is bullshit so because yeah of birth pains or

[00:18:54] there's something yeah they're right up there right the god let's see we can find a birth pain

[00:18:59] simulator for you see how you fucking like it yeah because every time I've seen any of those

[00:19:05] videos and the guys come up all smug they cannot withstand it and they usually only get them up to

[00:19:11] like like one or two or three right right and they can't dial it up any further and it's like what's

[00:19:18] the highest one oh you know 10 yeah right and they can't even handle a little bit of it right so get

[00:19:23] the fuck out of here yeah okay against a mask us okay Hamoff and our pad are shamed for they have

[00:19:33] heard bad news hmm their fainthearted there's trouble on the sea it cannot be quiet

[00:19:40] hum Damascus has grown feeble poor Damascus yeah I hate it when I grow feeble she turns to flee

[00:19:47] and fear has seized her English and sorrows have taken her like a woman's labor is yeah why is

[00:19:54] the city of praise not deserted the city of my joy therefore her young men shall fall in her

[00:20:02] streets and all the men of warshabby cut off in that day says the lord of hosts are you not

[00:20:07] worshiping me the way I want you to then you will die right that seems fair have fun with that

[00:20:12] that's fair yeah I love it's such a I I know we say this all the time but like the the idea that

[00:20:22] he doesn't get enough worship so you fucking die is such a petty bullshit way to manage your

[00:20:30] peons that are fucking just little ants to you yeah like what the you're the guy we were talking

[00:20:38] we were at your parents house tonight we were talking about blowing up you know army men with M 80s

[00:20:43] this is like that yeah he's blowing up army men with M 80s only their actual people with

[00:20:48] fucking thoughts and feelings yeah when you said blowing up army guys yeah I mean sorry the

[00:20:54] little plastic army toys yeah I apologize yeah right like you know how children like yes yes

[00:21:00] yes toys toys toys sorry I yeah I apologize but yeah he's just he's he's burning ants with his

[00:21:10] magnifying glass he's you know he's from toy story right yeah it's just I I can't even respect this

[00:21:17] god that they talk about no it's just such crap he's such an abusive cocksucker honestly essentially

[00:21:23] yeah right I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus and it shall consume the palaces of Ben

[00:21:29] Hadad all right now we're gonna go to a different area okay the deport Damascus they barely got

[00:21:35] like they apparently aren't coming back they don't rate they're yeah okay against Kedar

[00:21:41] and against the kingdoms of Hazor which never could nether king of Babylon shall strike oh wait oh

[00:21:48] now we're back in in the right time frame I mean these are remember out of chronological order so

[00:21:53] this just happens to be one that is oh oh here we are okay you're with us all right okay

[00:22:00] the says the Lord arise go up to Kedar and devastate the men of the east their tents and their

[00:22:07] flocks they shall take away they shall take for themselves their curtains all their vessels and

[00:22:13] their camels don't you take my camel and they shall cry out to them fear is on every side flee get far

[00:22:22] away dwell in the depth so inhabitants of Hazor says the Lord for never could nether king of Babylon

[00:22:29] has taken counsel against you and has conceived a plan against you arise go up to the wealthy nation

[00:22:36] that's dwell securely says the Lord which is neither which has neither gates nor bars dwelling alone

[00:22:45] their camel shall be for booty and got love them booty camels booty camels you know they mean

[00:22:54] loot but it's more fun to think of booty but yes um when I used to babysit and change diapers I would

[00:23:04] say booty booty butt but and it just made the little guy laugh booty booty butt but booty booty butt but

[00:23:10] again again their camel shall be for booty booty butt but and the multiple of their cattle for plunder

[00:23:19] I will scatter to all the winds those in the farthest corners and I will bring their calamity from

[00:23:25] all its size says the Lord Hazor shall be a dwelling for jackals a desolation forever

[00:23:32] no one shall reside there nor son of man dwell in it yeah they nothing either right this is

[00:23:38] like copy pasted from other sections so boring honestly yeah it's hated it stumb

[00:23:45] yep so now we're in a different section okay if they get any special but like that one at least

[00:23:50] mentioned nebuchadet Hazor yeah right so you like it for that reason no I don't like it but at

[00:23:54] least I know it's not like copy pasted in here from like you know Moses' time from like 500 years

[00:24:01] ago which is what a lot of these feel like yeah and that one specifically if feel I don't know

[00:24:07] I don't know what's going on here but I'm very confused and not confused I'm I think that there's

[00:24:14] something not quite right with the wording with regard to throwing this in this book that's all I agree

[00:24:21] great all right the word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet against

[00:24:25] elum in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah okay so we're more more relevant here

[00:24:32] yeah the says the Lord of hosts behold I will break the bow of elum the foremost of their might

[00:24:40] okay against elum I will bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven and scatter them

[00:24:48] toward all those winds there shall be no more nations where the outcast of elum will not go

[00:24:54] for I will cause elum to be dismayed before their enemies and before those who seek their life

[00:25:01] I mean yes if somebody was seeking my life I would probably also be dismayed yeah yeah

[00:25:07] the same portrait of words I guess right yeah I will bring mother fucking disaster upon them

[00:25:14] my fierce fucking anger says the Lord I just I have shocked I have a spiced it up a little bit

[00:25:21] right because like how many different times can you say I'm so mead right right and I will send

[00:25:28] the sword after them until I have consumed them I will set my throne in elum and we'll destroy them

[00:25:36] from there the king and the princess as the Lord but it shall come to pass in the latter days

[00:25:41] I will bring back the captives of elum says the Lord the end there we go there we go so elum

[00:25:46] the elum gets to pass apparently not Damascus and not some other group there who cares I could scroll back

[00:25:52] up right I don't really care that much either it's um it reminds me of um king Henry the eighth

[00:26:01] the way they describe his wives it was like um beheaded beheaded died beheaded beheaded survived

[00:26:10] right right like that's what this feels like yeah describing his little nations yeah and most of

[00:26:16] which I didn't even know still existed right so like it's it's really weird this is this is all

[00:26:23] really weird mm-hmm and it's almost counterproductive right for the narrative of the Bible in my opinion

[00:26:31] like me too good working for them it's like but you guys said that God said that they were gone right

[00:26:37] yeah and I would have believed you in so far as the story goes sure sure except then you brought

[00:26:42] this back and I'm like oh so God lied then right again again again again we would you know we've

[00:26:47] literally done a contradictions episode for every single book yeah I cannot wait to do the

[00:26:52] contradictions episode for this chapter I think it's gonna be lengthy and I think it's gonna be heavy

[00:26:59] yeah I don't I don't know that I have a lot else to add here it's uh these these books are kind of

[00:27:04] bullshit or these these these chapters are kind of bullshit in my opinion yep I will be

[00:27:09] interested in the Q&A yeah and I do want to hear these out just to hear what all you know so we

[00:27:15] get through it you know we got to read it all got read it all so um yeah that was that was Jeremiah

[00:27:20] chapter 49 sure as fuck was and tomorrow we will be back with Jeremiah chapter 50 all right we'll see
